Check validity or delete bookmarks.

Overview

SafariBookmarkChecker is a tool to help you manage the bookmarks you have stored for years.

It starts with reading the bookmarks from Safari (making a backup copy for safety), then let you do an extremely fast scan to detect bookmarks which have changed or are not available anymore.

Its main feature is speed! It can check over 1000 bookmarks in less than 2 minutes, a performance similar programs don't even come close.

From the main window, you can change the name and address of your bookmarks, or delete them if they are not available anymore.

There is no magic nor artificial intelligence in this software, so use it to quickly scan your bookmarks, then double check with your browser the availability of the addresses marked as invalid. A single click from the main window will open the selected bookmarks in your browser.

The UI doesn't have all the Mac touches (no shift-select to select a range of sites, selecting and updating bookmark fields is a tad idiosyncratic, etc.). And, I got different results on some bookmarks each time I ran this, which could have been caused by network conditions, or conditions at the target sites, but maybe not. However, this does the job, and it's free. It's hard to ask for more out of a free app. Using it, I cleaned out a LOT of dead cruft in my bookmarks. It's not perfect, but it's hard to beat the price. If you're going to run this repeatedly, you want to also have a terminal window open on ~/Library/Safari so you can delete the Bookmarks_saved-by_sbc.plist file before each execution. I found it useful to open open the preferences and crank up the site timeout value, and increase the number of simultaneous requests outstanding value. Basically, you run this, click a button, and wait for it to finish. Then, click the status column header to order the status results (Eh, this was a little clunky IMHO), and find all the 404's, 500's, 301's, etc. bookmarks. You can also order the window by name or URL, which is a poor-man's way to find duplicate bookmarks.

Believe it or not this app still works in El Capitan.

It will return one of several messages for each bookmark:

OK
TimeOut
Gone
Not Found
Moved Temporarily
Moved Permanently
Internal Server Error
Service Unavailable
Bad Request
Forbidden
Unknown
See Other

Then you have the option to recheck individual bookmarks if they weren’t "OK," visit the address in a browser to see if it’s still valid, or delete the bookmark.

Oh, the irony. I came to find a tool to check if bookmarks in Safari are valid/existent. Clicked Download above and found http://www.coriolis.ch/download.php?file=safaribookmarkchecker.dmg.zip to be Error 404, a dead URL!

Clicking on either of the two links yields the following result: Désolé La page que vous cherchez n'existe pas. Me thinks this exists no more.

This pony dose one trick and does it well!!! It finds all dead, forbidden and removed links within 1 minute, and you can sort the links by scanned result, link title, or just by links. I only wish it had ability to find duplicates, some check boxes, and a Delete Checked Links button :P But for now, I am happy with what I see. Keep up with the good work.

Works really well. Now, if this were a universal bookmark checker, for all one's browsers, the developer could easily charge, oh...$12 for it and do well. I'd certainly buy it! This, as a universal bookmark checker, and Bookit....what a really sweet combo that would be!

I did use SafariBookmarkChecker - Mac OS X some weeks and than it did not work anymore. I mailed the developper and did get very fast a good solution. Thanks! I use it in combination with BookIt (synchronizing IE, FireFox and Safari). Now I have the same set bookmarks in the 3 browsers AND without broken links.
