PeerGuardian1.7.0

28 July 2015

Security tool for P2P clients (Beta).

Overview

PeerGuardian is a privacy oriented firewall application. It blocks connections to and from hosts specified in huge blocklists (thousands or millions of IP ranges). Its origin seeds in targeting aggressive IPs while you use P2P.

PeerGuardian is an open project. Not only is its source code open for you to read, use, and modify - but the project is open for you to join and contribute in any form (code, documentation, bug reports, web and support).

This program does exactly what it purports to, and how. It rocks, I've never had problems with stability or anything else, but I've never delved into its depths. All that being said, it's ugly as sin. Really heinously, awfully ugly. I'm not a developer, so I don't know how hard it is to make an app with a UI (or at least a good menu-bar icon), but I hope that they release an update soon. Looks don't really matter that much to me, as long as it's functional, and this is entirely. If it gets a UI facelift, it'll get five stars from me.

If anyone is interested, 1.6b2 works fine for me on a Macbook Pro running Mavericks (10.9.5). I could not get any other version to work. It's available at sourceforge.net. You'll need to populate it with lists for it to work properly. I get mine from iblocklist.com. It's also useful to add lists from ipdeny.com for hostile nations. I'll let you deduce who you should add. (Hint: one in particular uploads a lot of bogus software to this site with fake reviews galore.)

This is very interesting. Is this truly being updated again or is this just a very dated package? Also any information on the supported OS versions for this release? The SF page itself is rather sparse it seems for this information.

Updated: http://bergstrand.org/brian/software/bin/PeerGuardian_180b2.zip p.s. If it still doesn't seem to work after this update, try "Quit Helpers", "Quit" and then relaunch. The kernel extension version should be 1.1.13: $ kextstat | grep xxx 233 0 0xffffff7f8292d000 0x5000 0x5000 xxx.qnation.PeerGuardian (1.1.13)

Extremely useful piece of software that works on Mountain Lion. I wish there were more of this type of app to choose from, but at least, we have this one. And yes, it works as advertised, if you try and figure out how it works. Don't install, sit back and expect it to do the rest.

Since today Peer Guardian is blocking all connections and all programs. I just thought there is some trouble with my internet connection, but it works fine disabling all filters... What went wrong there?

Good program, but the Peer Guardian Launch agent/daemon prevents Apple Mail and Notices from connecting to the iCloud servers. That is, the PeerGuardian helper applications prevent Apple Mail from connecting to the iCloud IMAP and SMTP servers. Definitely a bug. How can I solve this?

Ive been using this for a while with no problems, but suddenly today it stops working. Nothing pops up on the list and an error message pops up telling me that "this version file is corrupt" I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it. Restarting my computer but nothing. I cant use any higher version because Im working on OSX 10.5.8 (not even snow leopard) I dont have the money to update my whole operating system right now. Any help? Or an alternative?

Piece of garbage. Started randomly blocking all google servers without warning: impossible to connect to any google server via Mail.app or any browser, across user accounts, and took nearly an hour for me to figure out what it was.

Doesn't work at all. The log shows 0 activity, there isn't an icon in the top bar. I would consider peer guardian for the Mac a bust.

I am new to PeerGuardian and am having some issues, as far as I can tell it doesn't seem to work at all for me. I have opened the Application and all it does is make the sound effect for a mac like you hit a button you shouldn't have. There is nothing listed in my Log, nor in my PeerGuardian List, and I am unable to Update or Add anything because of the same problem, every time I hit the Update or Add button, the same error sound effect occurs and nothing happens This is the same with P2P (VUZE) opened or not opened... Please help, im dumfounded

Peerguardian gave me a corrupt file message and it had no lists. I've uninstalled and reinstalled it several times but it won't let me add a list. I want to put the P2P list back in. The corrupt file message has gone away since I reinstalled it. Thanks.

On or about 30 Dec 2008, Peer Guardian stopped updating its block lists. I uninstalled and reinstalled, and now my block lists are even more out of date. Could all the different block list sites be down at the same time? That doesn't seem probable, but I've never had this problem before.

well, I downloaded peep guardian today, it seems to be workings..i suppose, but i am wondering, do i have to add my p2p url to it somehow? i really don't know what i am doing. Example if i used limewire or azureus or something, do i have to manually go in and add that to peer guardian, or does it automatically block them?

This app is very easy to use, especially if used in conjunction with Growl. http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15979 You never have to disable PeerGuardian when you have Growl running, because all the sites I run into that are not allowed are quickly allowed thru Growl. No big whoop! If PeerGuardian works or not. Who really knows? But after a month and a half of use I have not received any emails from my ISP. This review will self-destruct in 5 seconds. Good luck Jim.

Needs to work on a per-app basis, really. You might want to block P2P apps from Microsoft, but it really doesn't help you talk to friends on MSN when PeerGuardian blocks Adium...

This application is a really good idea BUT : I couldn't connect to or use the following things: .Mac Homepage ( Page not found ) apple.com ( Page not found ) Apple Updater America's Army operations 2.3 ( "error couldn't connect to official Servers ...) iTunes Music Store All online games ( may crash after connecting to a server) and maybe some more that i haven't found yet ... with Internet Explorer i had access to apple.com but i had to think long why my mac couldnt do all the things listed above then i entered a command in terminal to stop this... ( like written in the ReadMe ...) but now i just blocked the IP's from the list with my Firewall, i hope this helps but i hope they make a version who really helps ... but good idea and good work ;)

FYI, Apple isn't collection information from you, what you see as it "phoning home" is most likely actually: .mac Mail .mac Sync OR, most likely your clock syncing to time.APPLE.com... OS X doesn't phone home, unless you register durning the install or report a crash to Apple.

ok. i'm not the developer, so i might be wrong on some points here, but to all the people complaining about the software blocking too many 'harmless' ip addresses, the issue isn't so much the software itself, but the peerguardian database. an on-off switch would be nice, however.

i cannot recommend this software because it blocks too many harmless sites. for example i couldnt visit my own website http://www.adfc-memmingen.de and it is definitly not harmful!! moreover it took me 2 weeks to figure out how to uninstall peerguardian. you need to search for all files named "peerguardian" and then delete them. (actually you can just go to /library/startupitems and /library/application support/ and delete it there but by serch is quicker) bad app!!!

It works well, i.e. it does block certain IP address', but it also blocks some IP's that I don't think are harmful e.g. www.dealmac.com, I'm still not sure why that site is blocked... Anywho, after you use the uninstall command you have to also type in "sudo ipfw flush" to get to sites in the blocked list. I'll use the next version if you can unblock sites with ease and temporarily disable.

It's great! I do hope for a whitelist/blacklist addition though, so I can customize it. And an interface that displays currently blocked IPs like PeerVanguard did (shows IPs that it blocked that tried to connect). Also, a way to disable it temporarily would be great.

I don't recommend this one, simply because you can't shut it off! After all, there may be times when you do want to surf to Disney, Adobe, etc. Also, the uninstall solution provided does not work; however, after doing a search for all PeerGuardian files and deleting them and restarting, I think I'm back to normal now. You might want to try PeerVanguard instead, although I've had problems with it as well.

I'm not the developer, I am the news editor of Methlabs.org, the creator of the original PeerGuardian application (which is open source GPL licenced). We are currently working with appleguru to help bring a Peerguardian solution to Mac, and what he has written so far is early, but looking good. Now, if you have ANY problems and questions, please contact the developer directly at our development forums at http://www,methlabs.org/forums there is a folder for questions related to the Mac version. I hope this will help with your queries. :) Joseph Farthing (JFM) News Editor, Methlabs.org

After installing PeerGuardian I was only able to go to the riaa.org-site. All other ports or websites have been locked. I was´nt able to write or get mails, to start Limewire or to open an FTP-port. Something went wrong. I´m sure. Now I have trashed PeerGuardian and everything is all right. Now I will wait for PeerGuardian 1.1 before I will install this application again.

I have no idea if this is running correctly on my machine or not. I followed your instructions on your website and I downloaded CronniX but I keep getting this when I run the script ..."The output will appear below when the command has finished executing" Nothing seems to happen. It would be really useful if you somehow combined PeerVanguard and PeerGuardian so that users can tell whether it is installed/running on their machine. An On/Off tab, as well as a tab for access attempts (a la PeerVanguard) would be superfantastic!

I actually have PeerVanguard set up thanks to MacGuru's excellent tutorial.. my question is, can I get an OFF switch as with PeerVG? Shields up! Shields down! I can cat the ip ranges of the config file, but PeerVG's name resolution tab is much better... Any chance of morphing these apps together? Pretty please? PeerVG seems to work but it's ooooold.
