Add Birthday to iCal is an Address Book Plug-In, written in AppleScript, that allows a person to add an event to iCal from within the Address Book application to help remind them of a person's birthday.

Installation is as simple as copying a script file into a designated folder. And using it is done through Address Book itself, since it merely adds a contextual item to any Birthday fields.

Support for nicknames and event recurrence is built-in. The iCal event also has user-selectable alarms attached to it.

  • adds the ability to select the timing and type of alarms to be generated for an event.
  • File name and contextual-menu text changed to allow both version 1.0 and 1.1 to be used side-by-side if desired.
Requirements
PPC, Mac OS X 10.3 or later, Address Book, iCal.

You can run this version to create reminders for special people in your life -- where you may want to be reminded more than once as their birthday approaches.

But because the filenames and menu entry text has been changed, you can also continue to use the previous 1.0 version for everyone else -- for whom you merely need a reminder on the day before their birthday.

Since someone had to ask about the other script (Add Custom Date to iCal), I suppose I'll post the hint/tip here too. A screenshot in the ReadMe might have been helpful, I guess. :)

The menu item this script creates is inside of Address Book. Just as Apple by default provides "Map of", "Copy mailing label", and "Copy URL of map" commands for any Address fields... You now have a command "Add to iCal ([name]'s Birthday)" when you click on a birthday label.
[Version 1.0]
