Driver for older Wacom tablets.

Overview

TabletMagic is an open source driver that allows Mac OS X to communicate with older model Wacom tablets with a serial interface and TabletPC digitizers.

Supported tablets include the UD, UD-II, ArtPad, and ArtPad-II (ArtZ-II) models. This is an ongoing open source project to bring full support for all serial Wacoms. See the accompanying documentation in the download for details. Source Code is available.

Version 2.07b works superbly on my Intel macpro with my old UD 12 tablet and keyspan USB to serial adapter, I even wrote this review using Inkwell! The software still lacks some features ofered by the Wacom softwarer and required a little adjustment of the settings beffore I was happy, but this is still beta software and as such works extremely well. Aftcr upgrading I had a problem with the deamon hanging but restarting appears to have fixed this. Considering Wacom's lack of support for non USB tablets, this is a godsend.

I hope the developer comes out with a version that will support the growing number of older USB-based tablets that Wacom has abandoned. All those older but perfectly sound Intuous and Graphire tablets are just collecting dust without working drivers on the newer versions of OS X. I would gladly pay a shareware fee to regain usefulness of my old ET-0405-U vs sending it to a landfill just because Wacom refuses to update drivers to spur users to buy new models from them.

Agreed. Wacom has really lost a LOT of points in my book for that behavior.

It's bad for me – and bad for the environment.

All that talk about "upgrading" hardware: it's disgusting, really. It takes 500 liters of water just to produce a phone. My mom, dad and his new wife (to use them as examples) have had around 10-20 phones in the last 5 years.

I'd love that too, my intuos 2 still work in Sierra but I can't configure anything. And indeed driver obsolescence is a serious problem (we had to gave away a perfectly working scanner because of that).

Unfortunately the dev has insufficient knowledge for an USB driver : https://github.com/thinkyhead/TabletMagic/issues/14

But if another developer can fork it for USB, or make a new one that would be great…

the TM 2.x series is a great step ahead ! again i'm very grateful for all the efforts the developer has been and will be (see todo list) putting into this ongoing project. it's a very good result we are presented with in vs. 2.ob1, for the lazy ones it even suffices to accept the automatic tablet detection setting ! thousand thanks to Scott Lahteine !

big praise to the developer, Scott Lahteine !!! this latest intermediate release 1.0b8 (as i understand it) brings tablet control back to Tiger (10.4.6). just open and quit the application, no settings, the daemon gets triggered and the tablet is accessible even on both of my monitors. Scott, thanks a lot(t) ;-)

I'm guessing the developer has, apparently, stopped development of this software due to lack of support... by that I mean either help in the actual coding of the app or donations. Maybe if you contact the developer directly via email you can get some info and maybe encourage the developer to continue coding this software.

I look forward to the full development of TabletMagic. The program seems to me to be about 60% complete. At least it is able to see my Wacom UD1212R and I was actually able to move the cursor around, albeit very unpredictably. However, I was not able to utilize it as an actual tool. I was going to sell my tablet on eBay, but now I think I will wait awhile longer to see if more progress is made. I hope the author is not on an extended vacation because I really miss using the Wacom. The panel where you set your tablet and monitor sizes does not work properly. There is no way to set the pressure, speed or resolution for the stylus, even though there are panels for such things. I would be happy to pay a shareware price for this software if it worked properly. I wish Apple would get their heads out of their "dark place" and help people develop programs that benefit their customers. Zhmmy

Just about at the point where buying a new tablet is the decision to make. Last piece needed to complete OS X upgrade.

I'll hold off selling my old Artpad II on eBay if it looks like there will be support for the tablet and my iMate USB-ADB adapter in OS 10.3 with this software. So, another request for ADB/iMate support real soon, please!!
