Let's take for example this QuickTime encoded MPEG-4 video:

if I have 3ivx installed on my MDD Dual G4 it crashes the host application (QuickTime Player, Safari, etc.) when opening the movie! When I remove the 3ivx codec, it plays nicely.

You simply open the movie in QuickTime Player and the CODEC decodes it.
P.S. When installed, the 3ivx CODEC is also available to any QuickTime aware application.

have macos X 10.3.1 and qt pro 6.4
excellent codec - much nicer at allowing random access within video file than Divx.
