MPEG-4 video compressor.

Overview

3ivx MPEG-4 is a mature industry standard video compression system which enables the transmission and storage of video, which would otherwise be too large to store or transmit. 3ivx MPEG-4 5.0.4 for Mac OS X consists of MPEG-4 Video and File Format components for authoring and playback of MPEG-4 media.

3ivx MPEG-4 encodes faster and with better quality in a smaller file size than QuickTime's built-in MPEG-4 encoder and still retains the ability to target all QuickTime 6 and 7 users without the need to download a decoder plug-in.

3ivx MPEG-4 Export components allow the easy export of high quality 3ivx MP4 and 3ivx AVI files from iMovie, Final Cut Pro and other QuickTime Applications which are directly compatibility with Apple's iPhone, iPad and AppleTV.

3ivx's high performance MPEG-4 ASP Decoder is capable of decoding most MPEG-4 variants (including DivX 3 through 6, Apple MPEG-4, Xvid and MS-MPEG-4v3). 3ivx MPEG-4 5.0.4 produces noticeably higher quality video than other decoders due to its high quality post-processing filters, and because of its core design and optimization can easily handle HD 1080p resolutions.

What's new in 3ivx MPEG-4

Version 5.0.5.1:
  • OS X 10.8 Compatibility.
  • QuickTime X 10.2 Compatibility.
  • Improved Retina Graphics for Retina Displays.
  • Re-written Installer for Gatekeeper Compatibility.
  • Code-signed for Gatekeeper Compatibility.

I advise anyone to be cautious with this codec, although this codec has a long development cycle and some good features, I think it makes more problems than it solves. Let's take for example this QuickTime encoded MPEG-4 video: http://de.m-audio.com/images/global/videos/88sxMG.mov if I have 3ivx installed on my MDD Dual G4 it crashes the host application (QuickTime Player, Safari, etc.) when opening the movie! When I remove the 3ivx codec, it plays nicely.

This entire thing appears to be a trial - isn't the decompressor supposed to be free?

To the two who complained about "No Application in the package"; it is a Quicktime CODEC! You simply open the movie in QuickTime Player and the CODEC decodes it. P.S. When installed, the 3ivx CODEC is also available to any QuickTime aware application. Geesh...

This seems to have a conflict with the Flip4Mac plug-in that prevents MS Office apps from launching. The problem is likely with one of the other products (my money is on Office, since none of the other apps that use Quicktime have choked by having both plugins installed). Just thought I would let people know that if you install this along with Flip4Mac, you may have problems.

I have Flip4Mac and Microsoft Office 2004. Everything is up to date and I have no conflict on my system. 3ivx, Flip4Mac and all Office applications work fine for me.

Downloaded the package. Installed it, no app!!! Various URLs, a pdf manual, an Uninstall feature, that's all. Disconcerting, to say the least...

Every new version since 4.0.4 has a bug where certain videos can't keep up with the decoding and you get tons of artifacts. So I'm sticking with 4.0.4 for now.
