I noticed that the app saves the images in the ".tiff" format. These images tend to take up quite a bit of space. Wouldn't it be better if they were saved as ".jpg". Thanks for a great app! Keep up the great work!

Okay program for cataloging movies, but the database search capability is overstated at this point. IMDB title search is hopeless. Part of the problem may lie within the IMDB search engine. Searching within the IMDB website is hit or miss, whereas searching the IMDB web site with a Google search yields quick and accurate results. This is especially true for less popular titles. Once the IMDB ID is entered into DVD Cache, querying the IMDB database pulls down quite a bit of the information, but not all. Other choices for database search sites is limited and few work consistently, save for Amazon. Some don't seem to work at all. Needs ability to add other search sites easily, even if data must be entered manually. Personally, I would like the ability to associate multiple graphics with each movie.

I didn't have any the issues that you listed. I run the Mac Mini with 512 mb ram. I don't have a scanner or iSight so I hand keyed in my 392 title collection. On occassion I encountered a no result for a UPC code but a simple title search located the movie. I opted not to use a secondary lookup, located at the bottom of the search screen, and received 98% of my finds from Amazon. The only real issue I had was that the export to iPod produced a file that weighed in at 1.2 gig. Other than that...this app worked wonderfully.

I've been looking for a good piece of software to catalog my DVD collection since starting my migration to Mac about a year ago. I'd tried and earlier version of this software and didn't care for it. After seeing an updated version, I thought I'd give it another shot, but unfortunately I still enountered issues while trying to enter in my 200+ DVD collection: 1). When using the multi-UPC entry, and an actual bar-code scanner (the iSight scan option has NEVER worked for me on two different iSight equipped Macs) the initial entry finds the correct movie. As an example, the first season boxed set of Sopranos. Seeing that, I continue on and enter in another row of movies from my rack. Then the software wants to do additional lookups where it matched the correct movie/upc with an incorrect match. I have seven or eight boxed sets of different titles. Initially the software recognized them, but then as I continue through the process only one title out of maybe 10-15 actually makes it into my library. 2). When entering multiple UPCs there is no option to work with the list being going through the entire add process. So if you see a problem, you can do nothing about it until you finish the process. 3). When trying to use the iSight camera, memory growth brought my MacBook with 1GB of memory to its knees. Within a few minutes I was using 1+Gb of virtual memory and 800+ meg of real memory. I killed the program and restarted and the minute I activated the iSight memory usage goes through the room. But as I said, I've never gotten the iSight option to work anyway. I would seriously register this product in a minute if it would do what I need to do.

This app rocks! Downloaded it a few days ago and now have my entire DVD Collection catalogued. Wasn't aware that you could also catalogue Music, Books, and Video Games. This app does it all for one low price compared to other apps that you would have to purchase individually to cover all the catagories. And iPod support as well! Response from the Developer is quick. I'm running a Mac Mini Solo running 10.4.5. If you are looking for a simple, clean app for all your assorted media types look no further. This is the app you need. Keep up the GREAT work!

so i got all my dvd's in various sleeves with catalogue numbers--or as the software has it "media location"-- (i.e. B5 would be Sleeve B, Slot 5). i'd rather not have to go to the computer every time i want to browse my collection for a move and i'm bummed out that there isn't an option to print out all my titles with jacket cover artwork, basic info and media location so that i can simply flip through a hardcopy booklet. other than that it's a decent piece of software.

I am using DVD Cache 1.1 on a Mac Mini running Mac OS X 10.4.2 There is a serious bug in this version when it tries to 'Find' a tile using the IMDb. if you enter a title in the 'Movie Title' edit box, and have DVD Cache set to Source 'IMDb' Location 'USA' Format 'DVD' DVD Cache returns a single line in the Display window containing the string 'IMDB Title Search'. If you search the Amazon db instead you can still get limited data on the dvd. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PROGRAM UNTIL THIS IS FIXED!! I HAVE SETN EMAIL TO THE DEVELOPER AND HAVEN'T SEEN A RESPONSE. I believe that IMDB must have changed their RPC/SOAP query format and DVD Cache 1.1 does not use the new format. but that is just a guess on my part.

I've always liked this small app, but never been able to fully trust it. I have twice lost access to the database of movies created by DVD Cache while upgrading versions (haven't tried re-importing into this latest version). The internet look up functions have at times been glitchy (a technical term meaning maybe it will, maybe it won't). There has just been a persistent beta, unfinished feel, to this app. I won't rate this version until I have had a chance to try it further, but I'm getting that "glitchy" "twitchy" feeling again. Check out the toolbar, for example. (Adding the Amazon menu item adds a second, faded, IMDB menu item. There appears no way to add the Amazon search option to the toolbar).

This is an great application, I have more than 500 DVD's to enter, and this is indeed easy to use! Now... Is it also possible to export my DVD list just in RTF text format without pictures? If the answer is yes, that would be great! The perfect simple way to e-mail my DVD list to my friends.

Smart remark # 1: Do you really need this program. If you say yes then you are saying that if your wife kids or friend borrowed a dvd and did not return it then you would not know it was missing. come on, get real. If you ever borrowed a tool from old pops tool box when you were a kid you would know the answer. You bet he noticed it was not there. Get over it Dev. this app is just unneccesary and $20.00 are you kidding me?

Nice idea`, but just far too buggy to be of any use. I have tried (5 times) to add a DVD to the database. Every time it fails, and every time the application crashes (with the "Application has exited unexpectedly, do you want to submit a bug report" requester). Fire up the application. Click to Add a DVD. Enter the DVD name, find it in IMDB and Amazon, click Add. So far, so good. Click Done. Oh, it didn't actually add it after all. Hmm, let's try again... hey, where'd the app go? It just died. Repeat ad nauseam. It's a shame, because the idea is good, and I REALLY need an application like this to track my DVDs, CDs and books. I'm more than willing to pay. Just not for something this buggy and unstable, I'm afraid. One to keep an eye on, but it's got a long way to go before it is usable.

I paid for 'pedia a day before I tried DVD Cache and in spite of being under the poverty line, I paid for DVD Cache immediately. I've had no regrets (other than having paid more for that other app I haven't used in almost a year.) Chris is a conscientious developer who responds immediately to any problems that have cropped up -- which are few and far between. I use this application every day and have more than 2000 movie titles, 1500 books and upwards of 1000 pieces of software that I've catalogued. I can't see using any other application - this one works, the developer continues to upgrade it, and it handles more than one type of media for one shareware fee. Definitely 5 stars.

Great Application. Been using it for many releases now, and have experienced very few problems with any of them. .98a is by far the best so far. Just got done adding about 400+ titles to my database with little problem. Only twice in those 400 individual title additions did it return no results from IMDB or Amazon when doing individual movie searches for adding a title. Just had to relaunch the app and the searches went through fine. Keep up the great work.

This is a really good application. I think it's not fair to give it a very bad comment when obviously it wasn't even tested properly. I used it for months now and I put all of my DVDs in (I do have a huge collection). Every few days there is an update and it's still possible to try it for free. Lot of features and works well. Sometimes I could see a litte bug but those were always repaired immediately. The first time you start it it takes some time until it opens, but then the speed is OK.

That would be much better! - please add support to enter multiple languages and subtitles (at least three of each); I need to know e.g. which movies can be watched in spanish as well. So far I think this is a near-perfect app and it has not even reached V1.0 yet!

Some strange behavior: 1. Seems to lock up and then unexpectedly quit when many (50+) dvds are being added. 2. The sheet for choosing from the IMDB entries sometimes appears blank 3. If there is one selection in the IMDB selection sheet the okay button is greyed out and you have to click off of the title and then clcik on the title again to get it to become active. It should become the default button at that point. Feature request: 1. A rating and notes feature so that users could add their own ratings and notes to the info 2. Some kind of CGI that would allow users to post their movie collections automatically to their web sites

There are a lot of little programmes out there at the moment that try to fill this niche. And they all seem to fall down in one or more respects. No one has really nailed this yet. But after trying a number of them for extended periods, I've settled on DVDcache because, while it does not have all the features I would like, it did allow me to catalogue a collection of 390 DVDs with a relatively decent degree of thoroughness in less than a day. The author has stated that he has a specific idea of what he wants the application to do, and doesn't want to bloat it out with a million esoteric features, and I respect that. I'd rather it did the core things well. In the end, this application saved me a LOT of time by grabbing the details from Amazon and the IMDb. The UI is a little clumsy in places, but overall much simpler and cleaner than the alternatives. It is definitely worth a serious look.

Just a small hint: How to PRINT Although I agree that this program should be shareware, the price has not changed. The program is stable and allows easy editing of lists, except for grouping, as in iTunes, or iMovie. To print: export your library as HTML. It looks a bit icky, but allows you to print it from Safari (page setup: LANDSCAPE) or any other HTML viewer. Safari also allows you to change the text sizes, for easier reading.

Not bad at all. I think it looks very promising. I agree that $30 is a little steep, but I think I could part with $20 for an application like this. I would like to see the author study Apple's interface guidelines a little closer before the final release. It's a great interface. It's close enough to being correct that a little work would make it a great interface.

A bit odd? GrpahicConverter costs $30 and has many features. It is such a good program and so well supported that it is worth that price. DVD Cache is still in a beta state, but the developer is holding his hand up for a large sum. Although the features in this program are quite promising, it is only an IMDB front-end interface. If there were more features and the exports were better looking, a $10 price would have been more acceptable. The MY IMDB feature on imdb.com is just a bit simpler, but it's free. An amazon.com integration is still not yet implemented, so I suggest that the developer makes a 1.0 version for a lower price, or drops the price and make it freeware again.

Hello. Thanks for developing this application. I am one of those odd balls who uses both a Mac and a PC. There is Freeware for this sort of cataloguing for the PC out there. The one I use is Ant Movie Catalogue. It has more features on it, but the challenging thing is that you have to find the pictures, reviews, and actors yourself. They are not downloaded automatically as in this DVD Cache. That's a wonderful feature. I travel a lot and have movies from all over the world. Thank you for allowing me to catalogue by Zone as well. That is really important these days. I'm not sure how useful the purchase price and UPC Codes are to the average person but apparently someone wanted them included. I would love to see drop down menues of Film Genres like Drama, Comedy, Romantic Comedy, Documentary, Thriller, etc. Many movies don't specify them easily but there are data bases that do. However, I am pleased with this product. Thanks for the upgrades. Please make it compatible with Panther or else we'll all be searching for another one - SOON!!

A great app with great potential. I still have a few niggles, though: The screen format and region still default to NTSC, region 1. Without any way to change the default, people like me in the UK with nothing but PAL region 2 DVDs have to change them manually every single time. I have over 300 DVDs to catalogue, so this gets a little annoying. There need to be more columns available in the normal browse view. Things like number of discs and price would be handy. You should be able to turn columns on or off like in iTunes. I would like there to be a facility to count up stuff like price, or number of discs, so I could for example see how much my collection has cost me, or how many discs in total I have. Also a more comprehensive search facility could be incuded. Finally, (this is being a bit picky, but...) having only region 2 DVDs, it annoys me that the IMDB posters are usually region 1 DVD covers. Region 2 ones are usually different. It would be cool to be able to choose say, Amazon.co.uk as a source of images instead. I think that is asking too much though.

All my posters are gone after updating from 0.44 - can't connect to IMDB when adding new DVD's (at least nothing is found) and add missing posters not working. Great program, just unhappy that I'm having these problems with no forum or support to help :-(

FEATURE REQUEST: 1.) Would like to see you be able to add movies without IMDB. 2.) Add under 'View Options' a column for type of media (dvd, vhs, etc.)

Version .6a will not open under OSX10.2.8 on a G5. It works fine under 10.2.8 on a Powerbook G4. I wonder if the problem is with the G5 not with 10.2.8.

It would be coold if this program offered three things: 1.-The ability to input UPC or ISBN codes and then have information pulled from one of the several open database on the internet. 2.-Be able to pull information from IMDB or Amazon directly (like readerware) without the need to manually input it all, 3.-Export information as Text, Palm and/or HTML with image(s)

It's a very good program, indeed! But suddenly half the requests return "Sorry, the url /title/ttvie.com/taglines is mis-formed in some way" - it's the ID that has that has some url attached to it at the end, like this: 0313443/trailers">\n\ only the number, not the trailers thing should be there. I write all this because I can't contact the author, hopes he reads this!

I like this program for what it tries to do for you. It would be nice to be able to input info for DVD's on your own. I tried to import a picture of a DVD that I have that DVD Cache found the right info but no picture, needless to say it did not work. If the author fixes this and the other minor problems it'll be a great catalog app.

• I just noticed that when there is no picture for a movie it cannot be added. • A simple sample of an HTML conversion can be found at: http://morefood.net/movies.html I used a stylesheet for the looks (the stylesheet is a bit complex, since it was used for a lot of pages). Furthermore each movie is contained in a separate table.

This is a great app for DVD catalogues and I could imagine that the same algorithms could be used to create a CD catalogue, with a plug-in to access the cddb when the CD is inserted. I do have three suggestions: • Could you change the image area so that double clicking on the image opens it in Preview? • "Movie Posters are no longer stored seperately. This should allievate most poster errors." It would be nicer if this option could be changed, so the collector can add his own images. Drag & Drop seems to work well, but I would like to edit them individually. • The HTML export could use a retouch. I'll email my solution top the developer, as promised earlier.

I wanted to like this free app but it has too many bugs to recommend it. Evidently, there is no way to contact the developer so one has to make their comments/bug reports here, so here goes. When I delete an entry then attempt to re-add it, it just stalls and does not add it to the list. For example, I deleted "Lost Horizon" since I didn't originally have a scan, so I deleted it with the intention of adding it immediately and hopefully getting a scan for it. Also, adding to, or editing the Cast listing is a nightmare. After you type in an actor's name how do you then type in the actor's role? It doesn't work. When I AM able to enter an actor's name and close the title, and go to another movie title, the previous entry shows up in the present title! Another oddity: when I attempt to click on a certain title in the list to edit it I can't! The title isn't highlighted or anything. Overall, the app is barely useable as an inventory of your discs, but if you want to keep detailed information about them this app has a long way to go.

very good app. Pity it does not handle properly foreign accents. Data base management needs serious improvement. Printing lists, backup, creation of records outside the imdb would be I believe greatly apreciated. All in all a great expectation was created. Please keep the good work.

Great start! There are some bugs though... DVD Cache doesn't remember certain things: I live in europe and list my DVDs as PAL, yet every time I reopen a DVD file the selection has reverted to NTSC... Program doesn't remember column resizing either, for example roles/Actors. Also if you manually enter the name of the Producer, it stays there with the next DVD file you enter. Same thing with genre. (not great when you enter a thriller first, then next DVD is one of my kids' or vice versa...) And why is "preferences" greyed out in the Menu? Anyway keep up the good work, you're well on your way to making something sellable! For those of you complaining about cover art and related items, like International versions (some endings differ from country to country) this is something to take up with IMDB, not Chris Campbell who has done a nice program that really isn't really at beta stage yet, but I'm using it anyway ;-)
