Subscribe and view new comic strips.

Overview

iComic is an upgraded version of iBert, a program that allows you to download new comic strips to your desktop and view them. Features include:
  • Easy to use interface, works like Apple's Safari browser.
  • Subscribe to your favorite Web comics, then collect the latest strips from them.
  • Easy to use tabs to flip between the comic you subscribe to.
  • Open architecture, supports plugins written in the Perl language
  • A plugin may return a single image or a whole set (such as from an archive page)
  • Windows sizes to fit the comic you're viewing
  • Add strips you like to your Favorites. You can then add comments to them, and even find a strip based on your comments.
  • Drag-and-drop from iComic directly into other applications such as Mail.
  • Only downloads the strips if you are connected to the Internet — quite modem-friendly.

Those still interested in iComic can find plugins and discussion here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/iComic_group/ iComic is open source and the source code can be found here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/icomic/ If you are a developer please consider picking up it's development (no development has been done for nearly 5 years) and restore it to the great app it was intended to be. Please post your progress in the Yahoo discussion group. (I'm not the original developer, just someone who loves iComic)

iComic lets you download the *entire archive* of a comic into your database for later browsing. I don't think Comictastic does that. I don't know of anything else that does that actually.

Actually, Comictastic can do that. Choosing between the two is mostly a matter of preference, really. And sometimes the availability of a specific plug-in.

I like iComic as I am now able to get my favorit e comic strips that my hometown newspaper no longer prints. And if you don't like the metal look, I suggest the haxie from Unsanity which will remove the brushed metal look. Hey, who can beat the price of freeware?

I don't want to sound harsh on this review, but Comicastic is way better. There's no doubt. It has way more features, a good interface (I don't see why everyone likes iComic's "brushed" look) and you can view any comic you want without any plug-ins at all.

Great idea and love the interface. Only gripe (and this is not at the developer) is I wish more cartoons were available.

I dislike the metal interface and the strange window resizing -- and I really dislike the lack of actual comics. Also, it locks up all the time and the icon stinks. Comictastic is a much better deal, even at a whopping $15, because it looks so pretty and offers instant support for any comic you want. Unlike iComic.

Very well-made program. Quick to respond, pretty, easy to use. I have a few gripes (ugly toolbar icons, no way to remove the included comic subscription, tabbed interface a little odd), but overall very good.
