Word Counter2.10.1

04 January 2019

Counts words entered into a text field.

Overview

Word Counter is an application that performs a word count and a character count, but it can do much more. It can be used independently or in conjunction with other applications such as TextEdit, Microsoft Word, Pages, TextWrangler, and others.

Word Counter can automatically update the count based on a user-defined time interval. It can show the progress achieved towards a set goal for the total number of words and characters. It also can perform bulk counts on multiple files and folders simply by dropping them onto the window. Word Counter can count the number of times a particular word appears in a document. It can even create a sortable summary table of all words in the document, with the number of times each word appears and the length of each word. Word Counter can also calculate estimates for readability statistics using the well known Flesch-Kincaid readability formula and many others.

Word Counter can handle various file types including plain text (txt, text), rich text (rtf, rtfd), Hypertext Markup Language (htm, html), Microsoft Word (doc), Microsoft Word XML (wordml), Apple's Web archive (webarchive), the Adobe Portable Document Format (pdf), and others. This program may be useful for writing a manuscript or an abstract with a strict limit on the number of words or characters allowed.

What I find the character count is brilliant for is actually SEO work with Title and Meta Descriptions etc.; This is absolutely invaluable for that.

On El Capitan it works only with txt and rtf. Formats doc, docx, odt, fodt and even pdf are not recognized, and the software says that I need at least Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5 for these formats. Maybe there's an error reading the correct OS version number, i.e. it's reading 10.11 as 10.1. (?)

This app give an extensive report about the number of words. Even though I prefer a handy tool of the web version more, such as http://wordcounttools.com/.

Doesn't PopClip do this exact same thing; as one of its many downloadable options?

Actually still works a treat (word and character counts) in OS 10.4 Tiger (despite the minimum requirements of Leopard). Happy days.

What a great app! And, for free. Please frequent the developers web site and get a screen saver. Or, donate. What a gem! The perfect complement to any word processor. The perfect augmentation to any writer's armamentarium. Along with Apple's own dictionary and word services; and Spell Catcher- I feel truly supported to just write- with whatever tool I wish. This is especially useful for Text Edit Users. One of those apps that once you have- you wonder how you lived without!

Many thanks for this clever, simple, and helpful application. Used with TextEdit, it will allow me not to buy MS Office, as I only used Word to write articles without layout... but I needed absolutely a powerful word counter. Here it is ! Icing on the cake, the developer is so kind and responsive. Congratulations from France

Word Counter cannot open Pages documents directly. As stated in the "What's New" section, Word Counter work with the Pages application itself. So if you have both Word Counter open and Pages open, Word Counter should be able to count the text in the Pages document. You must set it to work with Pages in the Word Counter preferences and then make sure the floating counter window is active. If you still have problems I would suggest e-mailing me and I can try to help you.

Could anyone explain the advantage of using this app over WordService? http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10523 It provides 37 different word services, including statistics - words, characters, lines - accessible through the service menu, with no need to have a separate app running. I only ask because Word Counter sounds such a good bit of software, but I don't see that it would give me any additional functionality. Incidentally, if you do not want all 37 services fattening up your service menu, this other bit of freeware, Service Manager http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11777 is a PrefPane which allows you to remove any service you do not require from the menu.

Haha, updated in time for NaNoWriMo excitement to start picking up. Marketing genius, I say. That is, if you were making any money off it. ;)

I love this little application. LOVE LOVE LOVE it and use it all the time. It's great when setting up templates for client work where I need to have a specific number of characters in certain areas on a layout, I no longer have to count the characters individually. UGH, what a pain that used to be. The application is great, the price is better and thank you all for making this.

SWEET! This should be a basic feature in any OS, but kudos to someone developing it and making it free.

David Hanauer is a genius. The elegance and simplicity that this necessary utility for anyone who needs to fit a classified's character or article's word limit provides is amazing. Note the attention to detail in the disc image graphic and the application icon - pure breathtaking beauty. I think this one belongs in the Hall of Fame among all freeware. Only thing missing is Clipboard Counting. I'm sure that's next.

Those who don't already have WordService should do a search for it, here on MacUpdate. It can do word counts, and a good deal more, from within any Services-aware application (TextEdit, etc).

Wonderful little application. Quick, simple and best of all FREE. Perfect when you just need a word count but don't want to open a full WP program. Has updated twice in the last couple of weeks. Kudo's to David Hanauer the developer.
