Word Counter

2.10.1
04 January 2019

Counts words entered into a text field.

Overview

Word Counter is an application that performs a word count and a character count, but it can do much more. It can be used independently or in conjunction with other applications such as TextEdit, Microsoft Word, Pages, TextWrangler, and others.

Word Counter can automatically update the count based on a user-defined time interval. It can show the progress achieved towards a set goal for the total number of words and characters. It also can perform bulk counts on multiple files and folders simply by dropping them onto the window. Word Counter can count the number of times a particular word appears in a document. It can even create a sortable summary table of all words in the document, with the number of times each word appears and the length of each word. Word Counter can also calculate estimates for readability statistics using the well known Flesch-Kincaid readability formula and many others.

Word Counter can handle various file types including plain text (txt, text), rich text (rtf, rtfd), Hypertext Markup Language (htm, html), Microsoft Word (doc), Microsoft Word XML (wordml), Apple's Web archive (webarchive), the Adobe Portable Document Format (pdf), and others. This program may be useful for writing a manuscript or an abstract with a strict limit on the number of words or characters allowed.

What I find the character count is brilliant for is actually SEO work with Title and Meta Descriptions etc.; This is absolutely invaluable for that.

Still works on High Sierra, albeit to open it you need to go in an verify its authenticity in Security & Privacy settings... but it works all the same after all these years. Awesome!

On El Capitan it works only with txt and rtf. Formats doc, docx, odt, fodt and even pdf are not recognized, and the software says that I need at least Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5 for these formats. Maybe there's an error reading the correct OS version number, i.e. it's reading 10.11 as 10.1. (?)

Only the developer can, and the app seems to be abandoned. Furthermore, it's 32-bit, i.e. it would stop working in macOS 10.15 anyway.

This app give an extensive report about the number of words. Even though I prefer a handy tool of the web version more, such as http://wordcounttools.com/.

Doesn't PopClip do this exact same thing; as one of its many downloadable options?

PopClip (with its annoyingly aggressive pop-in window which partially obstructs the text you're working on) will give you a word count. Period. Word Counter, working in your choice of text editors, will give you word count with an auto update, as well as word frequency, readability stats, and preferences to ignore certain words (or words of a set length), to count hyphenated words as one or two words, to exclude a list of chosen words, to give character count with or without spaces. Not, I think, the "exact same thing."

Actually still works a treat (word and character counts) in OS 10.4 Tiger (despite the minimum requirements of Leopard). Happy days.

What a great app! And, for free. Please frequent the developers web site and get a screen saver. Or, donate. What a gem! The perfect complement to any word processor. The perfect augmentation to any writer's armamentarium. Along with Apple's own dictionary and word services; and Spell Catcher- I feel truly supported to just write- with whatever tool I wish. This is especially useful for Text Edit Users. One of those apps that once you have- you wonder how you lived without!
