EasyFind5.0

18 July 2014

File, folder, and text contents search tool.

Overview

Unlike Spotlight, EasyFind finds files and folders by name or content using advanced Boolean operators similar to DEVONthink and DEVONagent, wildcards, and phrases. It does not require indexing, is fast, and uses very little memory. Of course EasyFind doesn't just give you the files, it also shows previews and gives you many other options to work with them. And it's free.

What's new in EasyFind

Version 5.0:

This release features an updated interface and some powerful new options. Searching tags and comments have been added, as well as the ability to search more than one scope at a time, e.g., Name and Tags. Wildcards and Booleans are now supported in filename and contents-based searches, as well as support for some regular expressions. Columns have been added for Comments, Info, and Tags, accessible in a new Columns menu. Updates have been made to sorting, deleting, and viewing the results with QuickLook. EasyFind is also a fully 64-bit, notarized application, compatible with macOS 10.15 Catalina and dark mode, using modern frameworks for better performance and reliability.

Note: Starting with this release EasyFind now requires a minimum of OS X Yosemite.

New
  • Added a Regular Expressions option including highlighting of found occurrences in filenames.
  • EasyFind now supports searching: Name, Contents, Tags, or Comments of files/folders. These can even be combined in a single search.
  • Added new optional columns: Comments, Info, and Tags. The Info column displays the version of applications or bundles, the size of images, the size or duration of movies, or the page count of PDF documents.
  • Added a Columns menu for easier access to columns and the possibility of assigning shortcut keys in System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > App Shortcuts.
  • Added iCloud Drive to the Location popup.
  • Added support for macOS Services in the search results.
Improved
  • Reorganized and refined the user interface.
  • Renamed the option "Unix Wildcards" to Wildcards. Also, the Wildcards and Boolean+Wildcards option can now be used in both filename and contents-based searches.
  • The Kind column is now resizable and identical to the Finder.
  • Sorting now uses system-wide settings and should be more consistent with the behavior of other applications. Results can also be sorted by Comments and Info.
  • The Created column is now hidden by default.
  • Renamed the menu command "Add to DEVONthink Pro" to Add to DEVONthink and toolbar item to DEVONthink.
  • Renamed the toolbar item "Delete" to Move to Trash and the command "File > Destroy" to File > Delete immediately.
  • If selected items can't be moved to the trash, an alert is displayed asking whether the items should be deleted immediately.
  • After deleting or trashing an item, the next item in the results is automatically selected.
  • Toolbar icons have been updated and are Retina-compatible.
  • Improved support for Asian languages.
  • Improved performance and reliability, including faster searching.
  • Karelia's LetsMove framework is used to install EasyFind in the Applications folder on demand when the application is launched from another location.
Fixed
  • Fixed an issue where EasyFind > Check For Updates didn't work.
  • Fixed an issue where Help > Contact didn't use the default email application.
  • Fixed an issue where symbolic links were not ignored in contents-based searches, sometimes leading to slower searches and extra results.
  • Fixed an issue where the up and down arrow keys could not be used to navigate the results when the Quick Look panel was open or the search field had the focus.
  • Fixed an issue with drag and drop not working properly.
  • Fixed issues with multi-threading.
  • Fixed issues when handling file aliases.

Without doubt this is the "best" little finder programme. Never had any problem with it ever. Can't say more than that. And its free. 8 - )

MacUpdate's description is not updated when it currently says that version 5 dates from "18 July 2014". What downloads is version 5 dated 3 March 2020. This should be corrected so not to scare away people who (like me) will not download apps that haven't been updated for several years. Read more here: https://www.devontechnologies.com/apps/freeware

I've used easyfind for years... It's maybe a bit slow, but it's the easiest app that finds everything. No spot on your hard drive remains unsearched. System folders, libraries, invisibles, content... Finds it if it exists. No worries, no doubts. It's free, but if they charged for it, I'd pay whatever they asked.

Downloaded after a few days trying to fix the "find" function in my finder, and giving up in despair. Seems to work perfectly.

Finally a perfect searching tool for MacOS. Works like a charm and saved me hours of manually searching through my external drives.

What Spotlight and the Finder can't find: EasyFind does. This is an indispensable program.

The same search of an APFS volume that takes EasyFind 135 seconds takes Find Any File about 5 (five) seconds, but don't hold your breath for an update any time soon, because "Full AFPS compatibility will come in an update but I can’t say when. We are in the middle of several very high-priority projects right now", and while that sounds promising, it's the same response I got when I emailed Devon about a bug around three years ago, and there's yet to be an update.

What I'm wondering is how Easyfind compares to Find Any File on a NON-APFS volume...faster, as fast, or similarly slower?

I've loved EasyFind for years and would love to give it 5 stars, but the lack of support for an app that is badly in need of support costs it big-time.

Outstanding search tool. It is excellent and super easy to use to search your entire hard drive. I use it often when deleting any application to find the often many support files that are NOT deleted by simply trashing the app. Many of these app support files are not even deleted when you use the developer's delete utility.
