Apple X11 for Mac OS X offers a complete X Window System implementation for running X11-based applications on Mac OS X. Based on the de facto-standard for X11, the open source XFree86 project, X11 for Mac OS X is compatible, fast and fully integrated with Mac OS X. It includes the full X11R6.6 technology including a window server, libraries and basic utilities such as xterm.

Hi,
I had the same problem with VMD 1.8.5 and 1.8.3 until I added the apple supplied comment to my .xinitrc file in my home directory. VMD works
locally after restarting X windows.
BUT!!! Importing another VMD session, say from
a LINUX box, does not work even with this fix.
vi .xinitrc ;;; then insert this line before the end
.
.
.
# snip
defaults write com.apple.x11 enable_stereo -bool true
# end snip
# start the window manager
exec quartz-wm
Cheers,
Joseph
hi -
i downloaded this update for my intel imac and now it appears that i am unable to run VMD (http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/vmd/)
(i run vmd_linux remotely on my mac from our lab cluster headnode). It just crashes immediately after opening, with a segmentation fault.
When i use strace, i seem to have errors in with GLX (as one would expect!) eventhough I have done the "defaults" update command as recommended. Has anyone else had this or a similar problem?
This showed up as an update on my PowerMac, but not on my MacBook. I downloaded the installer for my MacBook, and it said the install was not needed. Both machines are running 10.4.8.
I'm trying to install x11 on my iBook running Tiger. I keep getting a message in the installer when selecting a volume to install on. The message says "newer software exists, x11 will not install".
Any suggestions?
okay - x11 does not necessarilly come installed and it can be used by any mac user. panther vs. darwin? heh? i use both and need X11, because Apple did not install it on my mini and I cannot do a clean install every time anything goes wrong. and you don't need to reinstall everything . . .

The release is aimed more at users of Darwin rather than Panther. Yes, the page should say that it's not meant to be installed over 10.3's install. And yes, the installer probably should say that it's already installed. They don't. Get over it and move on, there's no need for name calling or Apple bashing.
In Panther the X11 app in Utilities said it was version 1.0. Then I download this, "upgraded" it through the package installer, and now I have a spiffy new X11 app at version 1.0.
,,,so what's the difference exactly?
Panther (Mac OS X v10.3) includes already X11 v1.0!
There is no point to release a separate version here, unless it is an update for "older" systems, like Mac OS X v10.2.8.
The system requirements are Mac OS X v10.3.
Apple, are you sarcastic, or what?
"However, when i now run X11, rather than getting the 'aqua' windows as with the 1st beta, I now have what looks like proper X-windows. Is this how the new beta should look, or is there a problem with my installation?"
No, it's your installation that's the problem. You're .xinitrc file is calling another window manager, instead of Apple's quartz-wm.
Just successfully installed the 2nd beta with no probs. However, when i now run X11, rather than getting the 'aqua' windows as with the 1st beta, I now have what looks like proper X-windows. Is this how the new beta should look, or is there a problem with my installation?
Wow, this is awsome! So far i have found one bug, you know how if you have a window open and you hover your mouse over top of something in the behind X11 window it will sometimes show a tooltip (specifically using openoffice). but if you have a window overtop of that item and you move your mouse to the place on the screen where it was, the tooltip still shows up. Sorry if my explanation is confusing, but i just noticed the bug while I was working, so...
You have to put the full path in the command side. /sw/bin/bluefish will launch bluefish If you have it installed.
It works well so far. copy paste, i an not sure it works, but i will futz around with it some more.
Folks, this is HUGE. It's XFree86, but with Quartz graphics engine integration. You get Aqua window widgets (Like in OroborOSX), but speed/performance is lightning fast-from startup to X app launch, this is 3-5 times faster than XDarwin or OroborOSX. Just be sure to add the line "quartz-wm &" as the first startup item in your .xinitrc file, or else X will start up without any window widgets at all! Also, note that existing installations of XDarwin will break (but not OroborOSX--that still works fine coexisting with this). Finally, all your Fink-installed X apps will work fine--Apple's X11 installation automatically adds the correct values to $PATH. Now all it needs is a launch menu that actually works (current one is busted), and a command-Q keyboard equivalent for quitting X11. Woohooooo!
How would you rate Apple X11 app?
