GPL Ghostscript is an open-source PostScript interpreter that includes integrated support for the CUPS printing system in Mac OS X. It is the replacement for ESP Ghostscript.
What's New
Version 8.71:
Support for tiff file output is now provided using the libtiff implementation rather than our more limited native code as in previous releases. There is also a new 'tiffsep1' output device which produces halftoned separations at 1 bit-per-pixel, in contrast to the 'tiffsep' device which produces 8 bit-per-pixel plates.
Support for using FreeType as a type rasterizer has been greatly improved. We do not recommend its use as of this release, but it is much more functional than previously and our intent is that it will become the default in a future release.
The graphics library has been updated to provide more accurate scan conversion of vector art including fixes to dash behavior, transparent stroked paths, thick stroked paths, radial shadings, xps cap handling, "pie" joins, degenerate beziers, improved handling of dropouts in thin strokes and better thin axis-aligned strokes.

Note, 8.71 is not the latest version of Ghostscript, but it is the latest version that is directly available as a standalone installer.
If you already have either the Fink or MacPorts package managers, then installing the latest version from source is simple. If not, there is a way to obtain a more up-to-date installer, by using the MacTex-Additions package from the MacTex project:
http://tug.org/mactex/morepackages.html
That installer is a meta-package which contains several programs, including the latest Ghostscript. Most important, it has a "Customize" install button that will allow you to install Ghostscript by itself. You can also run the Ghostscript installer directly by right-clicking on the meta-package, selecting "Show Package Contents" and then navigating to "Contents" and then "Packages". Then just double-click Ghostscript-9.02.pkg. This is the easiest way to obtain the very latest Ghostscript without compiling.
Where $home is your root directory of your hard drive.
The 'bin' folder is hidden so you will need to us the Finder 'Go To Folder' menu item or a utility to reveal hidden folders.
In an application that needs it, such as Scribus, in preferences point the gs file path to the executable in your 'bin' folder.
To pont to this file, open the 'bin' folder or leave it open from the install. When in the Open dialog in your program, click on the executable in the 'bin' folder.
It first requires you to download another piece and the instructions work fine here. Later during the compile the compile gives up and reports that it does not know how to compile the src/png.c.
Not usful for non-programmers that can't work-around compile problems.
