OpenOffice.org is both an Open Source product and a project. The product is a multi-platform office productivity suite. It includes the key desktop applications, such as a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation manager, and drawing program, with a user interface and feature set similar to other office suites. Sophisticated and flexible, OpenOffice.org also works transparently with a variety of file formats, including those of Microsoft Office.

Go get LibreOffice, the progressive spin-off project from OpenOffice. Oracle have allowed OpenOffice to fall behind. The majority of OpenOffice developers have moved over to LibreOffice as a consequence. Don't expect OpenOffice to catch up.

Oracle no longer handles this project, it was given to Apache awhile back and The Apache Project just released this update.

Thank you Umaromc. After LibreOffice overcame their bugs and became viable I gave up watching the OpenOffice soap opera. It is terrific to have the project out of lazy Oracle's hands! Hurray. We may actually see these two projects recombine, which is I believe the way it should have always been.

Open Office is not a slam-dunk on compatibility with MS office, but for the price, it is a fantastic solution. Open Office sometimes changes the formatting when opening Excel documents, and the macro language is slightly different - which means that if you have macros written in Excel, they might not work when you open them with OO. Other than that, I like the compatibility with so many types of documents! If OO can't open it, I do not know what will! Also, it saved me from having to buy the latest version of MS office when I switched to Lion. OO is fully Lion compatibile, whereas my previous version of MS office is not.

I have Office 2008 and basically use Word and occasionally to open a Powerpoint/Excel file. Can you elaborate on what is not fully Lion compatible? Everything I do seems to work just fine.

Now that Apache has officially taken over OpenOffice from Oracle. IBM has also now donated it's Lotus Symphony to Apache as well. I wonder if LibreOffice will merge with them and have one cohesive effort towards open source office suite

OpenOffice's actual Version is 3.3.0, a Beta version is 3.4.0 dating from 13 Apr 2011. OpenOffice is dead. In February the radically improved LibreOffice 3.5.0 will appear. It is unlikely that the code of OOo and LO will be ever more compatible. Also the majority of developers is with LibreOffice since Oracle killed OpenOffice. Let OpenOffice silently R.I.P. in Apache's basement. Nobody cares about this dead horse. Only dung worms.

@Big Mac XL. I appreciate your hatred towards OPenOffice. But it isn't going away. Apache foundation also has IBM to back them with OpenOffice. It's only matter of time before we see OpenOffice become the defacto standard of opensource suite.

I always have this downloaded but none of my colleagues or staff use the ODP files anymore and we have all reverted to .DOC again. It's awesome for free and it compatible and I do like the way it looks, actually. But, it doesn't get launched very often anymore. If you don't need to use Word or Office Suite and you have not quite invested yet in converting to the cloud using Google Apps -- I have not -- then this is perfect.

Well, I am using Ooo sometimes, because it can open some csv files or tab files that will cause Numbers to freeze or to display a single column spreadsheet.

Problem: Ooo is too heavy.
Works fine, but slow and unfriendly...

Use NeoOffice. It seems damned good to me, making my use of MS Office drop dramatically. In fact, it does many things much better, and it works (so they say) by providing a bridging with OO, with improvements OO hasn't incorporated. I'm not technically inclined, but I know if a program works for me or not, and NeoOffice does.

Sorry to say but OpenOffice is a dead horse. Oracle gave it to Apache and there it is rotting on an obscure "Incubator" page. If you want to use this software in the future you need to switch to the fork LibreOffice which is now at version 3.4.2. Thanks for the good time, OOo! Time to move on!

I wonder if this why NeoOffice has started violating the GNU public license by charging for their product. Sure, they call it a donation, but donations are not mandatory the way the NeoO fee is.

Mrboma: Why would you say that charging a distribution fee to distribute software could somehow be a violation of the GPL? The Free Software Foundation has specifically stated that charging money to distribute GPL software is permitted.

The GPL does say, however, that as soon as you receive a copy of the software, you are entitled to also receive a copy of the source code. And, you are also permitted to redistribute it to anybody else. You can either give it away or charge more money for the copies you redistribute, but YOU also have to extend the same offer to YOUR recipients that YOU will give them the source code if they ask YOU for it.

Anyway, the NeoOffice website includes clear instructions explaining how to obtain the source code and compile it on your own Mac, without needing to pay anything.

Blauggh: I said what I did about the GNU because I was misinformed. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any way to delete my comment. Still, it is cheesy to call the fee a donation when it is mandatory to download the application. That isn't a donation.

@Big-Mac-XXL what rubbish? Incubator is where ALL NEW apps get in. Once they mature they are moved out of the incubator status. Apache will now be improving it along with the IBM Lotus symphony donation to Apache as well.

Well, OOo lies already forever in Apache's incubator which indicates this OOo egg will never hatch. The majority of OOo developers jumped on the LibreOffice train which is running full steam.

You are doing a very good job since years and all that free of charge: 5 points!
Someone has send me a document (created by MS Office but unable to open it again) and I could open it with OpenOffice - so I would give you 10 points if possible!

Ugly and flaky, difficult to use by comparison to Pages, but if you're used to MS Office, this is similar. My only reason for recommending it is that it uses the UNIX printing system/CUPS to generate the PDF, rather than Quartz, which is useful if you have to deal with Lulu, the arrogant online publishers, who refuse to allow mac users to use Quartz.

The problem with all these open source office copycats is the processing engine. OOo, Google, Pages, etc. — they all use the same one. They all process complex word files wrong. If a file has tables and included images and such, the files opens up with errors and all messed up.

Why the heck am I downloading a BETA?!
This isn't listed as a beta, so did the developer link to the wrong file, or was this intentional?

The file downloaded is OOo-Dev_3.4beta_20110411_MacOS_x86_install_en-US.dmg

I'll stick to iWork and Bean, TYVM.

After reading the comments, I'm kind of persuaded that I'm the only one with this problem.
And it's a huge one! I've downloaded the software (multiple times, different versions), and I can't open the .dmg file. This file give me the worst crash I've ever seen on Mac OS X. Can't mount the file. Final. I've tried many thing, and everytimes, result is the same : I've to reboot to regain control of my iMac. Weird, isn't it? I did even tried to rename the file, just to see. As soon as the file is selected : crash city! As bad as the first one trying to open the file! This is supposed to be a great piece of software, but I'm stuck with Micro$oft Office, maybe for the rest of my life.

Try NeoOffice (see the link above under OTHER PEOPLE SUGGEST). It's OpenOffice also, Macnified slightly differently; same file formats so completely compatible with standard OpenOffice. See feature comparison of NeoOffice, OpenOffice & MS Office here:

Yes, there are 2.4.1 builds for OS X , just not for English currently:

http://download.openoffice.org/other.html#en-US

Lots of people in the world use MacUpdate, and lots of people in the world do not speak English as their native tongue, so this version 2.4.1 was posted to MacUpdate.
