I like how it works, and it doesn't load on the system.

This program has spawned 14 “virusbarrier” processes consuming 2+ GB of Real Memory and 1-5% CPU EACH.
I also have been having problems with Versions hanging.
After uninstalling, my Versions is now back to normal.

Others have reported issues with Time Machine.

With this program all over the map like this it bears extreme caution before buying.

It seems that this, or similar, is a common problem across ALL Mac virus programs.

Incompatible with Time Machine. I finally ran the uninstall to get TM running properly again. It wasted a couple of days of trouble shooting. Apple is aware of the problem and since it also existed in the previous version I am not confident that Intego cares about it at all. Stay away.

I purchased this software today but I was given a serial key code that Intego rejected during activation. I emailed MacUpdate and Intego but neither has responded to my inquiry. I love this product a lot and my old Internet Virus Barrier X6 has expired and was hoping to use it right away but the program has been rendered useless to me even after paying for it.

Also, initially, the program won't install in my Mac unless I completely delete the old program and the accompanying "orphan" files. It took me awhile to find and delete all the files then reboot my Mac and only at this time I was successful in installing the new program. But to my dismay, I can't activate the darn thing because Intego rejected the serial key code that MacUpdate provided to me.

This software offers a free 30-day trial so I tried it out on my MacBook Pro 2.4g Intel Core 2 Duo with Lion.

The good:

Comprehensive suite of antivirus, antiphishing, and antispyware services plus an easy-to-use firewall. Frequent virus definition updates enable rapid response to new threats. Options to search for Mac viruses, Windows viruses, and/or 'nix viruses. Options to declare certain files or domains as "safe." Monitors inbound and outbound network traffic. Simple to use with clear (if not robust) downloadable documentation. Graphics panels show network usage, virus engine activity, and other key data. Comprehensive activity logging with optional export to Console.

The bad:

During my trial, the virus engine process periodically exited in the background unexpectedly, requiring system restarts to re-enable Virus Barrier. Depending upon the Virus Barrier options that I had selected (e.g., scan memory and live file activity), Virus Barrier processing could slow my system noticeably. One option that I apparently had enabled (I never determined which one) caused pages to fail to load in Chrome (these pages always reloaded just fine).

If you are looking for antivirus software, it is worth participating in a free trial to see if Virus Barrier meets you needs. I ultimately determined that Virus Barrier was a bit more heavy weight and resource intensive than I need at the moment. The installer provided on the Intego site apparently removed the software swiftly and without incident.

note that your $50 does *not* purchase a license for the app--it rents it for one year. older versions of virusbarrier continued to run (albeit with expired virus definitions). X6 runs for 365 days, and expires. after which, the app must be purchased again *at full price*.

I took this for a test drive for a few days and I was generally impressed with it. I didn't have any slow downs or stability problems on a Mini 2.53 C2D/4GB, 10.6.8 machine.

My only complaint is that I wish that the outgoing connection alerts of the Anti-Spyware feature were more like those of LittleSnitch or HandsOff. VB only gives a simple Allow/Deny option, while LS/HO give many more options such as allowing a connection on temporary basis, or allowing only the connection to a certain address.
If they improve that feature then I would consider this a great app.

Good evening, im wondering if anyone can help me here. fairly new to mac.

I installed virusbarrier and decided to delete it right afterwards, because it created a kernel panic and everything froze. I need my computer to stay on and active.

Deleted virusbarrier and the traffic monitor but the shortcut on the upper menu remains (right next to the volume and the wi-fi.) Any idea on how to remove this?

Ran Virus Barrier 5 and net Barrier successfully for over a year. Installed the new Virus Barrier 6 and things seem to work as usual. For the last week so my computer reports kernel panics due to Virus barrier 6. After I have now removed the software completely and the system is stable again. Intego please fix it asap.

There's a behavioral analysis tool that VirusBarrier X6 has that can cause kernel panics. It's a check box under, the email tab (I think).

Ok, so since i installed virus barrier, the program has been a resource hog. I mean at times it is taking up to 600 MB, but typically when i'm having issues it's around 370MB. That is a crazy amount of memory!

So that is not the issue. When i'm working in pretty much all the applications i use daily. (word, excel, powerpoint, photoshop, inDesign etc) All of a sudden i'll get the spinning beach ball and program become non responsive.

I force quit virusbarrier and problem solved. (at least for 5-10 minutes, then it does exactly the same thing.

I've added indesign, photoshop etc to the trusted list not to scan, but it doesnt help. (I will not add microsoft crap because that's the reason i have the antivirus software. Adding it to the trusted list defeats the purpose)

So I contact intego several times. The send new update, doesn't work. Send a program to run a report when it happens and I've sent them like 6 reports and have not heard back from them... I'm pisssed with this software.

It is just so buggy, that I don't know how they can let it out of their testing?

So since i have to have something that is always running to stop things, this seems to do the job, just acts like malware constantly freezing programs and buggy.

I spoke to tech support earlier asking about transferring my Virus/NetBarrier X5 subscription to the new one. They said if I purchase the software then forward the serial numbers of all 3 products they will transfer the remainder to the new account. Fingers crossed they are good on their word.
