FruitMenu is a haxie that gives you the ability to customize the Apple Menu and contextual menus. Using a visual editor you can edit the contents of the menus to suit your needs and taste.
FruitMenu will also display the contents of the FruitMenu Items folder inside of your Library folder, launch applications and shell scripts from the Apple Menu and contextual menus, to allow easy file navigation and launching.
To make the haxie completely flexible and customizable, you can assign hotkeys to particular menu items.
What's New
Version 3.8.4:
Addressed an issue that caused some people to get a bad binary of FruitMenu. Very bizarre to debug. Even more bizarre to fix. Involved a shotgun, some fish, and one of those things coopers help make.
I miss Ned.
Requirements
PPC / Intel, Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later.
I'm a great fan of FruitMenu and I miss it in Lion. If you're (like me) interested in updates, read this: http://www.unsanity.org/archives/haxies/preparing_for_lion_with_a_45_discount.php
"REQUIREMENTS
PPC / Intel, Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later" is dishonest.
As their web site and other posters point out, NONE of their products works with Lion.
For me, FruitMenu is a must-have. I have purchased Lion but I will not update from SnowLeo until FruitMenu works. If this bunch of asshole developers don't get their act together, looks like I'll be stuck in the wilderness with SnowLeo. Or until Apple wakes up and restores the functionality of the OS9 Apple menu.
Finderpop may be a decent alternative.
I too was a diehard FM user but upgraded to Lion without even thinking that it wouldn't work. But since upgrading to it, and buying a new mini that will ONLY run 10.7, I don't miss it.
I di miss MenuMaster from time-to-time.
Unsanity is a pretty terribly run biz. C'mon, still not up to date? They sent out an email asking for money for something that hasn't been released yet? What are they smoking crack down there?
I got an early morning email from Unsanity stating "Currently, none of our products are enabled to work on Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion." Any developer knew that since Lion's release in BETA in 2010 - I suppose Unsanity doesn't care to pay the small price to be an Apple Developer and just noticed.
Well the really odd thing is the email says Lion version will be worked on but to encourage development they want us to purchase the current version of our favorite Haxies NOW (at a discount) even though those still won't work. Give them $$$ in advance and then not had to "pay again" for the updated version. (Last time we got "donation nags.")
Seems rather shady / risky to me. The old "take the money and run" or as I often wonder about the developer "take the money and die again never to be heard from."
I really have depended on FruitMenu and WindowShade for many years and many versions but I have no respect for Unsanity as developers or their lack of support.
I know! This company has become a joke and I've moved on from using their stuff!
Nice of them to let us all know that they're almost ready to charge for something that should have been rolled out months ago.
This company should crash and burn!
For those wishing to find out if your particular Unsanity app is compatible with Lion follow this link:
http://www.roaringapps.com/apps:table
Looks like another long wait til they're compatible again. The good thing is Sounds4fun is a great replacement for Xounds and the developer is working on a Lion compatible version. The list I mentioned above says the current version works with some glitches. Since I haven't updated yet I'm not sure what those glitches are.
Nothing on their web site about Lion. In fact one of the FAQ entries is still "Will your haxies be compatible with SNow Leopard." As much as I use and depend on FruitMenu and Windowshade I suspect that I will have to do without them for 12 months or more as I did when Snow Leopard arrived. What horrid support from a company of past glory. No excuses this time (like someone had a baby I think for SL?) Surely you can pay $99 a year to be an Apple Developer and test Lion.
Developer support is absolutely horrendous for this app- and Menumaster. I contacted both their sales and tech support team- never heard back.
FruitMenu was interfering with another program- as reported by the error log (believe it was Overflow). Stopped using, problem solved.
MenuMaster interfered with Dashboard. Deep Sixed that, and problem solved.
I have requested a refund from the developers- no response. Waiting for PayPal to refund my money. I bet they won't have any more success in getting reply from the developers than I.
And, it's a shame. I enjoyed some of the functionality of FruitMenu. And, believe it or not, liked the silly effect Menu Master has on label on drop down menus. The cool thing, is though I deinstalled the program- the silly effect continues.
Not a total waste. Hope you have better luck with their customer support than I enjoyed.
The latest update solved the issues I had with the new App Store program but there are still some cosmetic issues with the System Preference application.
I have the following haxies installed on my Mac (10.6.6):
- FruitMenu 3.8.4
- Labels X 3.0.1
- Menu Master 2.0.1
- WindowShade X 5.0.7
- Xounds 3.0.1
Any of the above mentioned haxies are causing the following issues:
- AirPort menu shows "No AirPort card installed"
- Delete Safari preferences on restart
- Delete Dock preferences on restart
- Delete Finder Desktop preferences on restart
- Crashes GrowlHelperApp
- Crashes SystemUIServer
- Crashes Boom
- Won't allow the presence of other menu extras (namely iStat Menus, Transmit, Viscosity, etc.)
- iStat Menus is turned off on restart
- Removes menu items
- Menu items order is lost
- Turns off MobileMe syncing
- Won't allow 1PasswordAgent to load in Safari
- etc. etc. etc.
Some comments:
- Fruit Menu should be limited to enhance the menubar for all apps and context menus in the Finder.
- Menu Master shouldn't mess with other menu items.
- Application Enhancer shouldn't mess up with apps the user didn't ask to be enhanced.
I have enjoyed all the above haxies since 2004 but now they are extremely unreliable and problematic. It's a pity as I really miss them (Including Silk and FontCard)
I also noticed Smart Crash Reporter is installed by default when installing FruitMenu. I unchecked this option because your website CLEARLY STATES IT'S NOT SNOW LEOPARD COMPATIBLE. The installer should be smart enough to skip it when detecting the OS version.
Is there anything specific that FruitMenu is causing?
Have you tried different FruitMenu settings? Excluding applications?
Have you contacted Unsanity about specific FruitMenu problems?
I've had all the haxies you mention, but only use FruitMenu and WindowShade. For a long time I stopped using haxies and these are the only 2 I decided to use again. Using 10.5.8 I've had only minor issues that have already been addressed and/or that I solved customizing my settings.
I have contacted Unsanity twice and they didn't bother to reply. I also sent them all APE related crash reports. I always contact the developer directly before posting any comment publicly.
Sometimes I'm not in the mood to troubleshoot. I just want the haxies to work. This isn't a beta release. I understand all software has bugs but this is just too much.
There's no settings option for "don't delete any preference files" or "don't mess up with my menu items" or "limit the haxie to this app", etc.
This isn't about excluding apps either, what does FruitMenu has to do with these apps: Growl, 1Password, AirPort Base Station Agent, Boom, Default Folder X, Desktop Notifier, Dock, Dropbox, Glims, Hazel, HoudahSpot, iTunes, KeyCue, launch2net, Little Snitch, LogMeIn, Mailplane, Pastebot, Printopia, PTHPasteboard, Quiet Read, RemoteHelper, Safari, SIMBL, Sophos AV, Spanning Sync, Speed Download, SpiceRack, System Preferences, TextExpander, Transmission, Transmit, Viscosity Warp and Witch?
FruitMenu should be limited to the menubar (SystemUIServer) and the Finder's context menu.
WindowShade X, Labels X and Xounds don't seem to be causing any issues, I have uninstalled them and the problem remains. The problematic haxies are FruitMenu and MenuMaster.
When I saw they released Snow Leopard compatible updates, I tried them immediately. I was about to purchase upgrade licenses a few days ago in order to support the developer. I'm glad I didn't.
Unsanity takes too long to release fixes for new versions of the OS. Some haxies haven't been updated in years!
Well, in order to get things to work, sometimes you do need to troubleshoot and get to the cause of the problem affecting your system, and the cause may be related to an interaction with other applications.
You can certainly limit FruitMenu (and probably all haxies) to specific applications via the Master Exclude List and each specific Exclude List. You can also setup FruitMenu Globally as well as for specific applications.
I don't know that FruitMenu has anything to do directly with the applications you mention. I have a dozen or so, but not all. You can exclude them if you want. Let's take HoudahSpot as an example. Thanks to FruitMenu I can use HoudahSpot, and access an enhanced Apple Menu with a lot of options I selected, such as launching a specific application, browsing through custom folders, restarting my Mac, switching to other open applications, etc. With something like KeyCue I don't want or need this access. If I were having problems I would troubleshoot and exclude it from FruitMenu.
Have you tried disabling or uninstalling MenuMaster? If your Menu Items are messed up, I would consider MenuMaster a more likely culprit. I have not used my copy in years so I'm not too familiar with it these days. My Menu Bar used to get messed up, and IIRC I ended up removing MenuMaster, AliasMenu, and probably one or two other applications.
I agree with a lot of what you say, but this is the place to rate FruitMenu. If it is indeed causing your problems, then it deserves a poor rating. On the other hand, if you're "not in the mood to troubleshoot" and give FruitMenu a poor rating just because you dislike Unsanity then these ratings lose their value. Unlike many people who truly post useless ratings, your comments do add value and information.
I'm not a fan of Unsanity. I have 10 of their haxies and only get to use 2 these days. I also bought their first product, Echo, in 2000 IIRC. I hated that it was discontinued. None of that has anything to do with FruitMenu, though.
I hope you find this comment useful, and thank you for taking the time for your previous reply.
For me the most important update was on March 1st, 2011- when Unsanity LLC announced a release of FruitMenu 3.8.3 to address an issue that made it nigh impossible to log into the Mac App Store (MAS).
I have been using this haxie for more years then i can recall.
Same problems as before with 3.8. Finder quits and relaunches itself, unable to access System Preferences via Fruit Menu, etc.
I get a message saying a new version of Application Enhancer is available: "Version 2.6.1 (Wednesday, December 31, 1969)"
As soon as the download is about to start, Application Enhancer quits.
I miss having Fruit Menu, but this is still too buggy for me.
Sounds like your legacy preferences in your system.
Experienced that on one mac... just uninstall ALL the Unsanity Haxies and reinstall the latest versions from scratch. Sorted it for me. The new generation 2010 haxies all working beautifully for me on Snow Leopard.
Thanks MJC.
I uninstalled everything back in July and started from scratch. I did the same this time. What seems to have worked for me was:
-Manually installing Application Enhancer 2.6.1
-Removing System Preferences from FruitMenu. I can access this by selecting Customize Fruit Menu, otherwise it just kept crashing.
FruitMenu now works, with the following bugs (so far):
1. Application icons often disappear. I've noticed this mainly with Firefox.
2. Roughly forty of my Contextual Menus are duplicated.
I'll use it for a few days and then decide whether or not to keep it. It does have very useful features, such as a contextual menu to gather multiple items in a new folder, but I can't stand the bugs :(
I just installed 3.8 which is supposed to be Snow Leopard compatible. It worked for about 2 days and then announced to me that "Fruitmenu Demo Expired", even though it clearly shows that I am a registered user. Anyone else having this problem?
I noticed this same problem on Fruitmenu 3.8.2 as well, though I am not sure how long it took to manifest. I only realized it when the IP address item I added to the Apple menu shows up as XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX. Selecting the system preferences menu shows "Fruitmenu Demo Expired" with a red warning icon right at the top of the submenu of preference panes. This problem was what kept me from using Fruitmenu consistently in 10.5.
I installed the most recent version and it was no longer a problem for a short while. I shutdown the computer for the weekend, but when I returned on Monday and booted the computer it was back showing the "Fruitmenu Demo Expired" again. Maybe some file gets corrupted with time. I'll try it again when Mac OS X 6.5 is released.
Changes only took place after logout/login (no surprise there). But the contextual menu items will not display, it stays with the OS default settings. Also the Apple Menu will not display "Recent Applications" alone (my preferred setting), it only shows the default "Recent Items." Not sure why, but it's no big deal.
I am using FruitMenu since its early days and I was always satisfied about its features and stability. The newest release however displays only french menus on my MacBook Pro running a German Mac OS. Very dissatisfying.
