Interesting concept, effectively turning the window 'close' gadget into a 'quit' gadget. There are some apps that do this anyway (iPhoto, Calculator, etc.), but for those that don't it could be handy. Problems I faced with the trial were that it limits you to 3 pre-specified apps (Preview, Safari and TextEdit) whereas you really want to try it on your own cross-section of apps to see if it works with them. Results with Safari were a bit erratic, sometimes it would quit, other times not. Also, the preferences window showing what apps are running & how many windows they have open was misleading. E.g. one Firefox window open with 3 tabs showed 8 windows open. Similarly Socialite with no windows open showed as having one window open, suggesting AppWrangler might not handle it properly. CPU usage seems ok, ticking over at 1%-2%, although RAM usage seemed a bit high, starting at 360Mb and then running at 802Mb after 10 mins.

All in all a good idea but probably not for me at this stage or without the ability to try it more extensively with a variety of apps I chose.

Thanks for your review, Rob. Regarding the "extra" windows, many Mac apps keep a lot of extra windows that you might never see when using them. While AppWrangler tries to filter out most of these, we can't catch them all. That is why we provide the Excluded Windows feature. You can see all of the windows AppWrangler is counting in the Window List, and if you feel AppWrangler should not be counting some of them, you can exclude them by adding them to the Excluded Windows List.

Regarding erratic quitting, you need to be sure you launch AppWrangler before you launch the applications you want it to auto-quit. AppWrangler will only quit apps if it is counting down to the threshold window count. And there is about a 10 second delay between when you close a window and when AppWrangler auto-quits. This is to ensure that AppWrangler doesn't prematurely quit apps when they're starting up. So if you're rapidly opening and closing windows, AppWrangler might not auto-quit them as expected.

As for the trial restriction we had to pick something. We thought it was better to have a trial that would work indefinitely for some apps rather than something like a 30-day timeout. And since Preview seems to be the application that annoys people the most, people who only want to solve that problem will never need to purchase a license.
