I am writing this as I download v1.5 and though this might seem premature I am giving it a five star review as version 1.0.5 already earns five stars as far as I'm concerned. I have used RapidWeaver for years and was loathe to spend time on learning yet another app (RapidWeaver just wasn't cutting it anymore) yet Hype has got my new site up and running quickly and reliably and I am already getting favourable customer feedback on it.

RapidWeaver with Stacks is incredibly powerful, and Hype adds beautiful animation possibilities to that combo. If you think RapidWeaver isn't cutting it anymore, then maybe you haven't explored its potential …

For me the combo of RapidWeaver, Stacks, and Hype beats the pants of some much more expensive "professional" software (I'm looking at you Adobe, don't think I didn't see you …).

I'm sure you're right Markus and I was probably a bit harsh on RapidWeaver. I used RapidWeaver from the start and used to develop my own themes for it as I when I needed them. I am very finicky about having a site that I design 100% so am loathe to use 3rd party themes which appears to be the direction RW is heading. I'm sure Stacks would be a great way to combine RW and Hype and if I get enough time I'll explore it but for now I think I'll just stick with Hype on its own. p.s. I don't spend enough time working on the web - I just need a new site every year or so, spend a furious amount of time developing it, then move back to programming and other stuff.

After incorporating a few simple keynote animations into iBook Author and seeing how much space they use I was looking for alternatives. I played with both Hype and Purple this weekend. Purple is free this weekend on the app store, so getting it was a no brainer. However I'm leaning towards Hype - it is easier to use and has more features. Purple seems less rounded and thought out.

That being said it is still fairly basic and needs more effects and transitions.

While Hype is able to output for iBook Author the process needs to be made much easier - Hype has a chance to position itself as the tool of choice, and others (like Shade) have already added "export to iBook Author".

So it's "make or break" time for Hype - if Hype can get souped up and keep the price it has the potential to corner the market for iBook Author animations before the big boys jump in.

Ok, my main criticism (the complicated export to iBooks) has been addressed, and addressed nicely - but did the price just go up? From $29 to $49? Or am I misremembering?

This is a very nice, mac-like, easy to use, fun to work with little app. The results are very nice, and I've seen some websites created entirely with Hype. Would be cool if the developer could add some web-uploade features for uploading single pages, then this would be the best replacement for iWeb ever. Actually, iWeb should have been like this…

And yes: Hype works great with the new iBooks Author app! Just follow these steps:

I downloaded the Trial, and I think it's pretty easy to use BUT... I am very disappointed with the utter lack of tech support. I have posted on their forum and sent an email with a question, and NOTHING. Does anyone here know how to slow down transition times between scenes in Hype? I have created 4 scenes and they work fine except that they transition too quickly. I have found nothing in their simplistic online tutorials or on their forums that addresses this basic problem. If anyone here knows how, please speak! Thanks.

Don't use scenes for that - use keyframes (for example slowly fade out the scene, then do the transition, then fade in the next scene).

To add sound: use a movie without a video track.

I posted this already yesterday - not sure why it disappeared.

I hope this evolves, it as easy as keynote or iWeb, it makes us get a deep breath when thinking that some of what it can do would require Action Script code on Flash, it's a nice app but incomplete, it's only on version 1 so I hope in the future more features are added, integration with HTML layout, so it's more flexible, more and better effects and most important how to I put and audio to play in all the scenes? I can't figure that out and manual, if it can be called manual, it has very little information. lot of things are missing like centering the code in the browser windows etc.

You don't need to use AppStore any more. The developers now have their own store.

Just select 'Tumult Store' under the 'Buy' button in their main navigation.

This looks good and a customer who uses it said he likes it a lot.

However, I won't buy from the App Store. If the author wants to sell me a copy, I'm happy to pay for it (30 bucks for this is a VERY good price) because the client really likes it, but he needs to offer another method of buying it.

And I agree with others about the no demo thing...I would NOT even look at this if I hadn't talked to someone who had already used it and recommended it to me. No demo? Get real.

Have you bothered to click the link at the top to go to the dev page? If so, you will see that there is a link to a 14 day demo. No questions, no forms. Just a download.

Ig88ig88: "People need to look before they speak sometimes."

As indeed do you. The demo is a new and very welcome addition that was most definitely unavailable back in July when the above comment was first posted.

Thanks for the heads-up though. Now at last it's possible to give this interesting app a fair test before having to shell out for it.

Even better, Hype is now also available for direct purchase from the developer's own store, no need to go via the AppStore only.

I'm really interested in buying this software, but without a demo? No way! It's a shame that developers put their software in the MacAppStore whitout offering a possibility to test the software. In the time before the MacAppStore, no developer could afford to sell their software without a demo to test it thoroughly. Thank you Apple for offering this customer-unfriendly behaviour.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think there's nothing preventing a developer from putting up a demo on their own website. So I think it is not really Apple's fault. That said... my personal advise would be to check out their support forum first before buying. Hype has been released much too soon, imho. It has lots of potential, but it is not exactly without bugs...

It seems like this is the price to have software available at the AppStore — no demos. This indeed may seems unfriendly move but there are examples when developer can place a "light" version of their product, which you can try and use indefinitely with option to have a full featured software for some more than reasonable price. This might increase a production cost (developing an extra "cut" version) but can benefit in a long run.

About Hype, I haven't try this product just yet, but it seems this is what some designers and developers are looking for — the future Adobe Flash technology replacement.

Hi there.

I, personally, don't see Hype as a "full website builder" nor anything like that.
It's more an "helper" to create the animations that will be integrated on the websites.
You might want to take a look on Flux, that's what I'm using right now to build the main structure of the site in a graphical way 8and using Hype to add some extra HTML5 animations)
There are currently no troubleshooting comments. If you are experiencing a problem with this app, please post a comment.

Hype allows you to create beautiful animated and interactive web content.

Hype's HTML5 output works on all modern browsers and mobile devices like iPhones and iPads. No coding required.

Interactivity & Animations
  • Hype's keyframe-based animation system brings your content to life. Click Record and Hype watches your every move, automatically creating keyframes as needed. Or, if you'd prefer to be more hands-on, manually add, remove and re-arrange keyframes to fine-tune your content. Hype lets you make as many scenes as needed, and a variety of actions can switch between scenes using smooth transitions. Use the power of multiple timelines to run animations based on mouse/keyboard events.
HTML5
  • Hype outputs state of the art HTML5, CSS3 styles, and JavaScript. It supports cutting edge features like box shadows, reflection, and 3D transformations. Hype tries hard to deliver 100% fidelity across all browsers. For example, if the high-performance CSS3 transitions aren't supported, Hype will fall back to Javascript-based heartbeat animations. When there are no good fallbacks, Hype warns about browser incompatibilities, so you're never caught by surprise.
WYSIWYG
  • Hype's scene editor is powered by WebKit, the same modern rendering engine that powers Safari. What you create in Hype is what your viewers will see in the browser. Hype's rich inspector lets you dive in and easily tweak every aspect of your content. Intelligent guidelines, arrangement, and sizing tools give fine control over element placement.
Exporting
  • Hype creates an entirely self-contained directory that holds all the resources and JavaScript for your content. Upload that directory to your web server, copy and paste three lines of HTML into your exiting web page, and you're good to go. If you have a Dropbox account, Hype can publish to your Dropbox public folder for easy sharing.
Flexibility
  • Hype provides a rich set of tools for styling, but sometimes you need to get hands-on. Every element's inner HTML is only a couple clicks away and all of your changes are rendered on the fly, giving a live preview as you edit. The integrated JavaScript editor lets you write custom functions triggered by user actions. The Hype JavaScript API can manipulate the scenes from inside or outside of the embedded Hype content.
Native Mac Experience
  • Hype was written in Cocoa exclusively for Mac OS X. It is intuitive and easy to use, letting you focus on creating great content. Hype launches in a second.
