This game is ONLY ONLINE!
Every time you start Torchlight the app ist going online "to check the serial number" again and again and again...!!
So if you plan to play Torchlight in you vacation where you may not have online access: Forget it - it just doesn't work.

I'd avoid buying Torchlight as a consequence. A pity as otherwise Runic seem to be doing some good work.

Torchlight has the feel and mechanics that we're all familiar with, and then ups the ante by adding gorgeous graphics, great feel and play, tons of interesting monsters and so many special weapons/armor/items, that you'll start drooling every time you take out a big group or a boss.
The developers also deserve a hand for removing many annoyances from this kind of game. For instance, simply running over your spilled gold collects it. You're always at 'run' speed, with no stupid stamina to usurp. You have a familiar which can attack enemies, pack items, and even be sent with them to town to sell your extra booty while you continue playing. Very nice touch.
In all, a very cool set up story wise, slick interface, beautiful graphics engine (runs at 1680 x 1050!), and enough thought put into it by guys (a couple of the lead programers previously worked on the Diablo series) that know what we want in an action adventure game. Solid game, and a steal at $20 or less (sometimes on sale).
