iDentify is an OS X application for tagging iTunes compatible MP4 video files.

Normally, when you convert a video file to the format used by iOS devices such as the iPad, iPod, iPhone or AppleTV, all the information about the video is missing! The only thing you see is the name of the file where the title of the video should be! Enter iDentify 2!

iDentify 2 looks at the name of files as they are added to it. Based on the name of the file, iDentify determines wether it is a TV Show or movie based on common naming conventions. From the file name, a lot of information

Fantastic program! Nothing better out there. I had to will it into finding the right tags for a few things, but it generally did the job. EXCEPT it can not find The X Files (series) at all. I've tried everything but it wont work. I ended up trying other programs (Meta X/Z) and they found the X Files tags without issue, but the programs were way too painful to use, so The X Files is still left un-tagged. (Please fix if you can!)

M4v files created by identify from the mp4 files that were originally ripped will not play on my older 160 gig iPod. They play fine in iTunes, but will not import to the iPod. I have checked the internet and a lot of people are having this issue. Why? What is being done to correct this problem in Identify?

It's hands down the best, fastest and easiest to use program for adding metaData to you movies.

Very active developer. (That listens)

Love it.

Definitely worth full price if not more.

First off let me just say that this is an AMAZING program. I was using MetaX to tag my movies / TV shows before this and it was really slow and a pain to use. This has made it almost instantaneous, so thank you very much for such a great app!

Just one thing I've come across today, I ripped The O.C. TV series onto my computer, and when I imported the episodes into iDentify to tag them - it didn't find any match for the metadata / artwork on The TVDB. I'm guessing this is because of the fullstops in the show name (this is how it is listed on The TVDB, as The O.C. with two full stops). It seems as though iDentify removes the full stops when its scanning for data so it searches for The O C which won't return any matches. Any chance of a fix for this?

Thanks again for such a great app!

I'll add O.C. to smart period replacement. In the mean time, you can add the periods to the show name manually and rescan, or turn off smart period replacement in the preferences.

Due to the recent flurry of updates to iDentify that the developer has made, I decided it was time to update my review. As before, iDentify is, hands-down, the easiest way to add metadata tags to your video files using the various existing internet sources. It had been lacking one significant feature though, and that was to maintain the episode data by DVD sorting, rather than the Aired order (a number of programs are aired in an illogical order). The option to sort properly by DVD order has at last been added. Oddly, despite having the option enabled in the preferences, I still have to change it a second time by selecting all titles, then using the option under "Edit Tags" to get the desired DVD sorting. That is a bit confusing and hopefully will be addressed in the future.

My only other real quibble at this point would be the TagChimp support. As before, TagChimp is an absolute disaster of a database, but I find it valuable in that the other metadata sources don't keep chapter titling data, while TagChimp does. Unfortunately, iDentify seems to automatically accept the first "hit" it gets when matching a show or movie to TagChimp's database, when there are usually several other hits available that have better information. This is especially problematic with TV shows. I'll run a full season of, say, Dexter, and get hits for chapter titles on 5 out of 12 episodes. Somewhere on TagChimp, there likely are the titles available for the other episodes, but I can't manually parse them like I can in MetaX. Hopefully the developer can come up with a way to let users manually parse multiple TagChimp hits without making iDentify overly complicated in the process. Barring that, perhaps an option to simply tell it to not write the chapter information if, after retrieving it, I don't want to use it.

One other suggestion if it's feasible… keyboard equivalents for the various toolbar commands would be awesome. Oftentimes, I find using keyboard commands preferable to using the mouse, and when flipping through multiple titles while reviewing or editing tags, it would be very helpful to be able to use the keyboard navigate to the next (or previous) file while leaving my mouse cursor closer to a field or other location I expect to need to click on frequently as well.

if you name your files with a d instead of an s when marking your season number, identify will automatically set the lookup mode to dvd ordering. example instead of "futurama s01e01" name it "futurama d01e01" the d indicates a dvd volume, not an individual dvd disc.

the ability to select other results is long standing on my to do list. just trying to figure out the best way to handle it, and havent come up with anything i liked yet.

more keyboard shortcuts will probably be in the next version or two. i have had A LOT of requests for that lately.

as long as you are currently in the Applications directory that will work :-) Rather Happy with that!

you could also do
'open -a "iDentify" filename filename filename' to send the files to iDentify
turn on automatically process added files and quit (registered version only)
turn on finder color labels (registered version only)

then either have hazel watch the folder you tag in for files with a green label (indicating the tagging process has been completed), and do more processing with hazel,
or turn on "add to iTunes" in preferences (registered version only)
and be done with it! You could even take advantage of the auto renaming features if you want your files named just so.

Any thoughts on just a simple "watch folder" feature?

Have to say kudos on your app gleaning the show info from variously named video files. Doesn't seem to like shows like Colbert Report which aren't really listed by S##E## formats. Would be great to be able to just arbitrarily tag those as "TV Show" even if it can't find the tag info.

I have to agree a bit with the GUI. Most apps today have adopted a brushed metal look to their icons, and the colored cartoonish ones in use in iDentify make it look dated to, say, Mac OS 10.2. I also don't see an option to show the icons-only on the toolbar, or customize the toolbar.

there arent any other useable toolbar items to customize with, so customization was been disabled. thats probably why the icon and text only options are gone as well.

LOL! Don't take it too hard or sweat it much. I'm actually familiar with the icon set you used. I never took much of a fancy to it… the artist is very talented (a teenager, iirc) but it just seemed out of place when I tried using them as system replacement icons in OS X. Still, if sales go well on the App Store (I finally plopped down my coin for it… tyvm!), it might be worth it to polish it some for a more professional look to help sales along. There's lots of professional stock icon sets out there that are very affordable.

Question: Why is it HIGHLY recommend you turn off optimizing after tagging if it's on an External hard drive? I have all of my visual media on an external drive and want it to re-write the tags and everything. Will this cause a problem, or just take a while?

Unless you need to maintain HTTP streaming hints (most people dont), Id recommend leaving optimize off. Why waste the time rewriting the whole file if you don't have to? This would be made even slower by the throughput bottleneck on the interface used to connect the external drive.

Plus, on external drives, for some reason, original files dont always get moved to the trash, or replaced by the temp files which also get left behind. Yet these functions perform exactly as expected on internal drives. Programmatically, there is no difference between the two. From a programmatic standpoint, its a path, just like every other, so why it happens I don't yet know.

New Problem: I turned on optimization despite being on an EHD, because I wanted all the file names to be correct and all of the info to transfer when I moved it to other disks and computers. While it did take longer, and left the temp file, it was no problem as I would just delete the temp file and then everything was good.

However, after updating to the recent build, now when I optimize, it converts the file to a unix executable file, instead of leaving as a .m4v. I've lost 3 season of dvds now. How do I fix this problem?

Unless I am missing something, it would be nice to be able to modify the meta-tag info as there will at times be mislabeling. Like, I have Gladiator and Identify chose a fighting movie rather than the Russell Crowe movie that it was.
Other than that I love the way that it does NOT corrupt my movie files like MetaX. Nothing worse than sitting down to watch a movie only to discover that you have black and sound or picture with no sound. Thanks for all the hard work!!!

This is the main purpose of identify. Independently figure out what the file is based on the file name, download the information for it and apply it to the file.

That said, your naming format will work just fine, and is the preferred format of the author (me).

One thing to note though, by default, existing tags in the file will trump any info gleaned from the file name. You can change this in the Lookup preferences by changing the drop down from "Read tag information from files" to "Ignore all tag information from files"

I'm not having any trouble getting info for that series episode using the file name you specified. What is the source of the original file? If you add the file to identify, select it and click edit tags, what do you see in the show name, season, episode, and video kind fields. You should see "peppa pig", 2, 32, and "tv show". If you see anything else, then there is probably existing metadata in the file throwing things off. In which case, try changing the preference mentioned above to ignore tag information from files.

AMH Software (developer) replied on 23 Mar 2011
This is a lengthy reply. The short answer is the IMDB code works, but is only intended for movies, and will not work for tv shows. This is because I don't and can't use the IMDB as an actual data source.

----

The IMDB code does work, but it was only ever intended for movies, since the tvdb does not allow lookup via imdb code. The IMDB is not a source that iDentify uses, as it is against the IMDBs' terms of service, and I don't need any lawyers knocking on my door for using them. However, theMovieDB does allow us to do lookups based on the IMDB code, but they only provide info for movies.

Any time you have trouble doing a look up, visit the source site. in this case, thetvdb.com, and search for the series you are trying to tag. Then copy and paste the series name in to the show name field and click rescan. You can apply this change to an entire series at a time by selecting multiple files from the file list then clicking edit.

The names do need to be rather precise. A correct show name and episode id should be all you need for a tv show look up. episode name is not needed or used to get a match. This was a design decision I had to make early on. I felt that taking a moment to match the file names when creating the files or the small tweak during scanning was preferable to having a false positive, resulting in incorrect data being written to the file.

Oh, and sorry it took so long to reply. I do check macupdate frequently, but since "trouble" comments are now on a separate page, your post got unintentionally overlooked until now.

I was working with ancient aliens this morning and saw what you were seeing, then it suddenly started working. If you are really that unhappy with the software, I'll be glad to refund your money and deactivate your registration code.

Easily remembered because it looks like a colon turned sideways.

Please forgive me if this appears to be belittling you in any way. I'm just going to post the entire process for fixing failed lookups here for the benefit of the whole community. But the process below will also help you fix your Star Trek files.

Do this. Drag and drop your ST:TNG files into iDentify. You might want to turn off the auto lookups first to save some time.

Select all the files in the file list and click edit tags.

In the show name field, enter "Star Trek: The Next Generation"

Assuming the file names already contained a season and episode number, those should be filled in automatically, though you wont see them when multiple files are selected. Show name, season # and episode # are all that are needed to perform lookups. You can then click rescan, and iDentify will search out all the information for you.

The data will be saved to the files once you click process files.

The official title is "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" the colon is the problem spot I've found. Unless its in the title it won't work. Yet the Mac OS will not allow you to have a colon in the file name. So you have two choices. Edit the file tag name to include the colon or put in the IMDB ID number, tt0079945. Problem is when you save the file the colon will end up as two Astrix (**) instead. So before I save the file I remove the color and either leave it blank or insert a hyphen.

Since, OSX doesn't allow colons in the file name, I turned the colon sideways. Using a double asterisk will tell identify to treat it as a colon. It was a work around from iDentify 1 that I felt still applied.

As mentioned above, if you don't want it in the file name, just edit the title tag, and click rescan. It will only get put into the file name after writing if you are registered and have the renaming option enabled.

I've been giving (224) a workout today and having some issues. I'll write the DEV with specifics, but I'm getting A LOT of crashes when performing a "lookup" aka "rescan item(s)". My files would process fine until the Chapter Lookup, and immediately crash. It took me quite some time, but I finally narrowed it down to the "Get data from tagChimp" preference. Unchecking that preference made everything fine. I'm not sure if this round of troubles is a conflict with the recent site updates at TMDB, but I thought I'd share in-case others were having an issue.

I just updated to the newest release (at least the newest posted to MU (216), and it crashes every time I do a "lookup". The Devs page says it's something that has changed in the TVDB website, and that he's working on it, but I have no way of verifying his claim as the program gives no progress info when performing a "lookup".

From the file name, a lot of information can be gleaned, such as movie title, show name, season number, episode number, year of release, and imdb code. iDentify can then automatically look on The TVDB, The Movie DB, and tagChimp to gather more information about the title, such as description, rating, chapter names and more! iDentify also inspects the file and can automatically turn on the HD flag on the movie when the resolution of the file goes above a set minimum!

iDentify not find your video? fixing it is easy! Simply edit the movie title or show name to match that found on theMovieDB.org, or theTVDB.com (respectively) and click rescan!

Want to change the tags of multiple files in one fell swoop? No problem! Add the files to iDentify, select all the ones you want to edit from the list, and click edit. All changes you make are now applied to all selected files!

When you are done, just click "Process Files" to write the new information to your files, and when iDentify is done, you are ready to add your videos to iTunes!
