Internet Security X9 overview

Internet Security X9 keeps you safe. You're not immune to network attacks and malware just because you use a Mac. There are people working day and night to compromise your network, steal personal information and develop malware and viruses that can wreak havoc on your computer and files. Protect against all these threats with one bundle from Intego: Mac Internet Security X9.

VirusBarrier
  • Keeps your computer free of malware such as Mac viruses, Windows viruses, Unix viruses, Microsoft Word and Excel macro viruses, Trojan horses, worms, spyware, adware, hacking tools, dialers, keyloggers, and scareware (fake security programs)
  • Detects Windows malware to prevent your Mac from acting as a carrier
  • On-demand malware scans, including full scans for maximum coverage of your entire Mac as well as quick scans for day-to-day use
  • Scheduled scans
  • 24/7 real-time protection that watches all file activity and makes sure you're always protected
  • Finds malware contained in archive files
  • Scans for viruses in emails for popular email clients
  • Scans for viruses on iOS devices and finds/eradicates viruses found in document directories on the devices
  • Automatically scans external drives when they are mounted
  • Flexible options for handling malware (automatically attempt to repair, quarantine malware for later action, or ask what to do on a case-by-case basis)
  • Marks trusted folders to speed up scans
  • Application behavior analysis detects suspicious behavior in running applications
  • Email notifications when malware is found
  • History logs
NetBarrier
  • Active application list easily identifies applications using bandwidth as well as incoming vs. outgoing bandwidth for each application
  • Logical default profiles for the different kinds of networks you connect to (home, public, and work)
  • Automatic profile switching detects when the network connection changes and makes it easy to select a new profile
  • Easily blocks/allows connections for specific local devices
  • Easily configures primary network channels to/from the Internet and to/from the local network
  • Full-time application activity monitoring for anti-spyware measures
  • Helps identify rogue applications accessing the Internet to act as zombies, expose your confidential information, or act as backdoors into your computer
  • Automatic application activity notification whenever an application is trying to do something on the network (take simple actions to allow or deny the application to run or to interact with specific domains or local devices)

Current versions are NetBarrier 10.9.28 and VirusBarrier 10.9.78. --> BTW: I've enjoyed using Intego for many years. It doesn't (does not) slow down your computer. There are very regular updates. HOWEVER! The company does subject users to analytics by way of Mixpanel. If you've got a 'reverse firewall', such as that by Intego itself (!) or Little Snitch, you'll find that every Intego process feeds back to Mixpanel. "Mixpanel is an event analytics service company that tracks user interactions with web and mobile applications. Data collected is used to build custom reports and measure user engagement and retention." - Wikipedia. - -> If you don't like this, you can "Deny" outgoing connections to Mixpanel in your reverse firewall.

I would not purchase this product and being a past user as of 9/17/19, am advising folks looking for a mac antivirus solution not to consider this product. I used this product exclusively on my Mac’s thinking it was the best because of the marketing line “developed by a company that knows Macs”. I had it for multiple years until this week when my Mac got infected. X9 happily reported nothing found during full scans, and when I contacted the company they stated their product did have the capability to detect my infection. Well, it did not, and now I’m left with having to rebuild my Mac from scratch and try to extract my photos, documents and video’s from my infected hard drives. There is a reason they say – you get what you pay for. Don’t buy this product, go buy from an established company who support multiple products on multiple OS’s. Search online for the PCmag review, thats an honest one.

As of TODAY, v10.9.18 is officially available to all. At the moment, NetUpdate is clueless. But it is the version at Intego’s Downloads page. So have at it! (Previous to today it was in beta, intended only for testers).

Certainly the best I've ever used. It's unobtrusive, reliable and works pretty quickly, without demanding too much of the CPU. I've been a customer for a decade or more and I have never had a problem with it.

Intego's products are terrible. I put their Internet Security bundle on my Macbook Pro a couple of years ago. A month or two later it would start to randomly slow down to the point of being unusable, and then occasionally freeze. But we didn't know at the time it was Intego's fault. I spent hours at the Genius Bar having those folks run every test they could think of on my computer. They even replaced my logic board under warranty, thinking that might be the issue. Nothing resolved it. Finally the light bulb went on. I used an app uninstaller program to delete all Intego products from my laptop and the problem disappeared and never returned. Intego didn't protect me from a virus, it WAS the virus. Stay away, horrible software you don't need to begin with.

Detailed malware detection test results are regularly posted here for nearly 2 dozen products, free and paid: http://securityspread.com/detection-rate-results/ These are very detailed, showing EXACTLY by name for each malware/virus if it is detected or not, for each product, then products are ranked 95%, 85%, 75% etc based on detection rates. Historical results are maintained so you can compare over time, and you do see product results change with each test (done every month to every 3 months depending on whether there are any new reported malware in the field, and a sample can be obtained for testing). I've done a bit of research on the site and tester, to make sure it was not one of those 'sponsored' sites by a vendor that are made to appear as objective, neutral reviews. The fact that the product rankings change constantly AND that the results are very specific and listed in detail, further support that this site and the tester are very objective. In fact this is exactly the kind of site and test results, that vendors DON'T want you to see, even the ones that do well on the test (because no product is 100%). I am posting this to support the Mac Community. When we are all better informed when it comes to this important area of security in this day of cyber threats, we all benefit. Education and information is the best defense, (as with so many things in life). For example, if someone uses MacKeeper because they don't know better, then in some ways the community failed for not getting the word out. If after doing some research and being advised not to use MacKeeper, someone still chooses to do so, then you can't help that, but hopefully it wasn't because there wasn't information available. My aim is not to support or dissuade anyone about a particular product, you pick / use or don't use whatever product you want, and live with the consequences, just remember that your decision can effect others, by virtue of whether you are part of stopping the spread, or being a part of it. I highly recommend you don't just look at the current results, but look at the past ones as well. You WILL see trends, with some products consistently doing well and others not so much, and some moving up and down. Remember, an A/V product rests on two main things, the scanning engine AND the malware database. A great engine can be crippled if the database is not updated in a timely manner. Conversely, a vendor that does maintain a current database might still not be effective if the program itself is buggy. This site only ONLY addresses virus detection results, it does not in general make any conclusions or post results regarding performance, installation, support, UI, etc.

The debate rages over whether or not Mac users need any Malware protection. It is most confusing and depends upon which magazine or website you read! I have, over the years used various versions of NetBarrier and VirusBarrier. I have tried the "Free" Sophos and Avast and both can be problematic without changing some of the settings. This suite is easy to install, runs quietly in the background and appears to have no impact at all on Mac speed.. It's GUI is a little 'loud' with garish icons and weird diagrams and graphics but easy to follow. There is a stated clash with Drive Genius 4 but it seems to be OK as long as Drive Genius is installed first, followed by Internet Security. I think approx. $60 Australian is not a bad price. I assume there will be a fee to renew definitions yearly. Moral: You get what you pay for!

I don't understand what's going on, but the current version of Intego's Mac Internet Security Suite is 10.8.3. The components of v10.8.3 do NOT show up in NetUpdate. I have no idea why. But you can directly download the latest installer for Internet Security Suite from Intego's website, install it, and what you get is: - NetUpdate v10.8.2 - VirusBarrier v10.8.3 - NetBarrier v10.8.2 Download from the web page below. On the page, under 'Latest Updates', is a popup menu. Select 'Mac Internet Security x8' then click the big green 'Download' button. You'll get the updated version of the suite. I have it running fine on OS X 10.9.5. http://www.intego.com/support/downloads

A nice and easy-to-use security software with an efficient anti-virus and a more-than-decent firewall. However, it would be nice to determine new firewall rules for applications that are not listed in the app's firewall list but exists in the Applications folder.

After several years of using Intego VirusBarrier X6, X7 & X8 I switch to Kaspersky. The first scan finds two trojan horses which was undiscovered by Intego. Of course they were not critical for Mac users, but I want to be sure, that I do not send malware to my business partners. In this case Intego failed!

Just upgraded to X8 from 2013 version - love the new interface! I trust Intego more than the others because they have the best malware detection rate and focus on building great software specifically for Mac. Would like to see these features return: - Ad blocking - Anti-vandal - more bells and whistles But in terms of anti-virus and firewall, Intego is the best for Macs. Hands down.

Why not some advanced mode maintained with ALL the granular settings from good old x6 version ? In Netbarrier and Virusbarrier they have added some advanced settings back in version 10.8.1 but I have bad feeling about a company making this kind of "roadmaps" I had fine/detailed control in version x6 ...
