Nice looking app with a great feature set, adding AAC/ALAC would be a great addition.

I am surprised they never bumped a ver with this release - 1.9 is so much more than 1.8 was. And then, I wonder if this will go the route of djay - Born Free, died $50. Even if it does, in its current form, it certainly is a good piece of software, for the casual DJ especially. In fact, I think I may just prefer it to djay...

Macupdate states that version 1.7.2 is the last PPC-compatible release, but here you'll find 1.9.0 for PPC as well as other downloads:

They had stopped providing PowerPC builds of the software, but I guess they changed their mind. Thanks.

Negritude is correct - we lost our PPC maintainer for 1.8 but a new contributor came forward and generously packaged 1.9 for us! (Open source rocks!)

A really good update v1.8
• the new skins look good
• the library is much faster
• browse mode
• iTunes playlist support
• the waveforms load much faster
• nice to see better support for dj controllers
• loops
• auto dj (crossfading a feature iTunes should have had long ago)

KEESBAKKER:

I highly encourage you to try the Mixxx 1.8.0 final release, not the beta version that you reviewed. We've addressed things like the high CPU usage (an issue mostly isolated to Macbook Pros btw), and we have a much faster library scanner.

We appreciate your feedback, but we'd appreciate it even more if you directed it to our public bug tracker that's accessible off our Support page ( http://www.mixxx.org/support.php ). If we don't know what issues are affecting people, we won't know what to fix, plain and simple. The whole point of a beta release is to get wider testing, but it's useless without feedback from our users.

Anyways, please try the 1.8.0 final release, and be sure to check out the release announcement on our blog. We hope your experience will be much improved.

OK, i gave it another go after trying the version 1.7 some month ago. I had big hopes for the the new version.

While i appreciate a free app like this (even open source) on Mac OS i think this app is not ready for prime time. And never will if they do not make the essential things work.

CPU: It uses nearly all available CPU power ( 90%). Something is funky with that waveform display. Interesting is if you lower your latency the waveform is more responsive.

Performance: Audio hick-ups here and then ( i.e. when changing preferences and loading another song).

Library: Could not load my iTunes library ( which is about 40gb ) , the app beachballed. You can not load audio tracks from CD.

The look: It just looks outdated. And fullscreen does not work ( regression to 1.7 ).

Not tested: The midi features.

To be fair i think the app has potential, but all these "new" features are waste of time when you cant even load your library.

They are even participating in the Google summer of code but instead getting more half baked features in the app, better spend the time profiling the app and iron out the massive bugs.

iTunes just don't cut it when it comes to playing some genres of music, Hip Hop etc. Many tracks sound their best when the pitch and eq is adjusted. Mixxx does this and a whole lot more and I find it very intuitive and uncomplicated because it follows the simple design of old school turntable mixer setups.

Here's my Mixxx configuration on an Intel 1.83GHz Core Duo MacBook running 10.6.2. This setup will not work if you want to playback live on external speakers. The benefits are you only need a pair of headphones (don't need external speakers, won't disturb the neighbours) and you can record your mix if you want to play it back on an ipod/amp & speakers later. The master audio will output via built in output, now when you want to listen to the other track press the headphone button on Mixxx interface and you'll be able to hear both master and headphones through your computers output. When you've synced the tracks turn off headphone on the Mixxx inteface. Now cross fade. If you record the mix and listen back the pre listening isn't recorded.

If you want to output to external speakers live you'll need an external sound card.

The configuration is in the post below

Sorry, forgot to mention this is if you want prelisten on headphones and cue up the next track. Of course if you don't won't to do this then you can use a single output to speakers.

I was having latency issues with soundflower so I installed JackOSX and so far no latency issues.

Audio MIDI setup:
Built-in output 48000 Hz 2ch-24bit

JackPilot preferences:
-JACK Server Section
Driver: coreaudio
Output Device: Built-in Output
Sample rate: 48000
Buffer Size: 512
Hog mode: enabled
-JackRouter Section
Virtual Input Channels: 4
Virtual Output Channels: 4
Auto-Connect with physical ports: disabled

Now start JACK server then open Mixxx

Mixxx preferences:
Sound Hardware:
Master JackRouter: Channels 1-2
Headphones JackRouter: Channels 3-4
Sample rate Hz: 48000
Latency: 49 ms

JackPilot routing:
Under send ports select the port then under receive ports double click the corresponding port to make a connection
Mixxx out1 -> system playback 1
Mixxx out2 -> system playback 2
Mixxx out3 -> system playback 1
Mixxx out4 -> system playback 2

It works fine on my MacBook CD 1.84GHz running Mac OS X 10.6.2. Maybe you should try a safe boot, repair permissions etc.
