I gave up LEAP for this as it seems to be more light wight. However, I have to go back to it as DataLore desperately needs a few more similar features, such as being able to search through folders by selection (and not recursively) - adding folders on the sidebar is not conducive. Also the panes need to be more adjustable.
However the price is decent and searches are quick - lightweight and aesthetically pleasing

Greate App! It has all what I need for searching. I own HoudahSpot too but now for all day usage DataLore is my first choice. It is quite easy to use and the additional option like filtering and special characters are very powerful. I like the option to limit the search to user specified folders. HoudahSpot's Finder Toolbar for searching the current finder folder would be a nice addition.

Minor ooops, the sparkle update is updating this listing too, I forgot that MacUpdate is automatically updating the listing when we change the sparkle URL update mechanism. Versions 1.9.x are pre-release versions of 2.0 that DataLore users are trying out. Simply download the product and select Check for updates from the DataLore menu to update to 1.9.x.

Version 2.0 is a free update for 1.X users. In the next couple of days our website will be updated and the download link will download the 2.0 product here. We are just in a moment of transition from 1.X to 2.0 currently.

This is a great application and I usually consider it a good thing when developers make frequent updates to their programs. However, it looks to me like they are trying for a new world record with updates to DataLore in the last few days. Why the sudden spurt of activity?

Aha! This latest version adds support for open meta tag search, and it works pretty well - well enough for me to spring for a license in fact.

Could someone get me uptodate on version-numbering, please? It says here on MU v.1.9.2 but when I go over to the devs site it says v.1.2.1 which is the one from Jan. 20, 2011. 1.2.1 is also the one that gets downloaded from the MU d/l-link.

I just updated my version and it says 1.9.2 in the "About Datalore" menu item. Weird that the dev site says 1.2.1.

I haven't downloaded it yet to try. But I'm hoping like hell it overcomes a major hindrance in Spotlight — the inability to limit a search to a particular folder or disk.

I have SpeedSearch and SpeedFind on board. They are not perfect but they do offer more options than Spotlight. However, Spotlight certainly is damned fast at some things.

Nice idea, but there is no ability to search by or restrict to a given date range. The only option is to search by name, then sort by date, and hope for the best while scrolling through a vast list of hits. What if I don't know the name, but I know the file type, and an approximate range of creation or mod dates?

Also, the quick filter popup is nice, but should probably have a user-extensible value list, and persist between launches.

Thanks for the well balanced review.

DataLore version 2.0 is just about ready for a pre-release preview for existing 1.x customers (this is a free update for existing customers) and has these type of features. Email me at support@xtralean.com if you're interested in looking at the preview.

Am I missing something or is openmeta not supported by Datalore? Seems like this would be something to support in a spotlight search tool. I tried entering tag:whatever in the search window like I can do in a Finder window, but got no results.
