Maybe I'm missing something, but this program is pointless unless the sync is auotmatic (like Dropbox is, for example). As far as I can tell, you have to manually open the program and sync the file for changes to register.

That's pointless. I can just use Finder to copy a folder to do that. A "syncing program" should keep the folder up-to-date automatically.

Maybe I've missed a feature...the lack of Help in the app might account for that...

Hi, the goal is not to do an automatic sync. If you copy an entire folder to replace a second one, you will remove all new files in this second folder. In reciprocal mode those new files will be copy from this second folder (target) to the first one (source).
If you use "Replaces" mode, then it's effectively the same as copy the entire folder, except that it's very long if you have many files. Sync2F will only copy the new files.

Thanks for the clarification Thomas. That makes some sense, but its not what I was looking for when I downloaded your program, nor was it clear from the description or (lack of... ;) ) documentation that that is the 'goal' of the program.

With a name like 'synctwofolders' I expected a program that would keep two folders in sync without further user input, just the way that my DropBox folder does. However, I'm looking for something that can keep folders auto sync-ed across physical drives without connecting to the net.

Any suggestions?

Thomas Robisson (developer) replied on 18 Feb 2012
Sorry but no. Maybe with an AppleScript or with Automator to detect when the source folder is modified and the copy the new or modified file in the Target folder.
A solution could be to use the Batch auto every 1 minute of SyncTwoFolders, but it will take many CPU and disk access.

SyncTwoFolders calls Finder to perform the file manipulating task, thus the performance is poor when syncing over shared volume. And the UI design is quite confusion. I can find no way to change the sync method (replace source, replace destination, skip, sync-delete) for individual file. I'm not given any option but accept the "Simulation" result for each item. And sometimes it failed to copy / delete files on the shared volume, and it just stops and shows the error counts, without any detailed information.

I thought about modify my program to allow to change the direction of the copy in the log, but it's hard to do and I'm not sure it's useful, as we select the sync mode before.
Do a simulation and check in the list only what you want to do.
When an error occur, do a Alt-clic on the two path in the log (source and target) in order to show the files in the Finder, and copy the file manually and see what happens.

Excellent, easy to use folder synchronization utility. Some sync options include: reciprocal, source completes target, source replaces target, manage date, and replace more recent.

Really helpful app for keeping files and folders in sync. Easy to use and very unobtrusive in my opinion. And I like it that I can choose e.g. between a simple update where previous versions are being kept or a replacement-sync that gives me just the latest version of files with no clutter in the target folder! Regularly updated by the author so give thanks if u appreciate it, too!

This app uses Finder to copy files so don't be surprised when you see multiple Finder "Copy" process' taking place. You need to familiarize yourself with the settings to insure that the end result is what you intended, the same as any other synch/backup application. If you are unsure read the FAQ and run a "Simulation" first. Once you do that this app does an excellent job! Be sure to download the proper version for your Mac (Intel - PowerPC) and drop by the developers site to make a donation.

Ah? I didn't test it on previous version of Mac OS (I use 10.6). I have to uncheck the compatibility with 10.3 then! Did you launch any of other of my application? Reading what you posted, I suppose that's the problem come from RealBasic library.

I have not kept previous version of my programs. I tried to download a previous version of RealBasic to build my app with 10.3.9 compatibility but I can't. There are changes in source code which cause incompatibility. I have kept some old projects (compatible source code) but they may be a little buguy then I can't build them neither.
Sorry.

This doesn't seem to work for me. It tries to sync folders/files over and over again even thought they are exactly the same (I have checked their MD5 sums to make sure) and the date and times are identical.

Maybe this has to do with the folder I am copying it to being FAT instead of the Mac filesystem which I am copying it from?

Aha! I read the developers older comments and found that just changing the "two dates are regarded as identical if their difference in seconds is less than" setting to 1 second. This took away all the problems I was getting with files being overwritten with an identical file.

If anyone needs this setting it is in the additional settings located at the bottom left hand corner of the main window (icon is a tick).

I am using this program SyncTwoFolders 1.1.4 on a PowerBook G4 10.4.8.

Looks like a good program, but after I set it up and it begins to Syncronize for the second time, Finder Windows begin popping up all over the screen the entire time it is running. Even when the program is in the background or hidden the screen is constantly flashing Finder Windows. It appears that the program is opening and closing every Finder Window it is looking in to Syncronize.

Would love to see this fixed.
