iShowU allows you to capture and record anything you can see on your screen, along with audio from any compatible source. They say a picture is worth a thousand words.
Ever been in the situation where you wanted to show someone what was going on, but couldn't? Either the person is not right next to you, not around, in another country... Now just record what you're doing and what you want to say, and stick it in an email!
What's New
Version 1.91.4:
Fixed issue whereby you could not choose ~/Desktop as a location for files.
Bug-riddled, non-functional CRAP. Upgraded to this version. Error message at startup, but it still starts up. Close preferences window? Crash with no error message. Tell it to record? Crash with no error message. What utter junk.
I know next to nothing about video and managed to do successful screenshots to upload to YouTube immediately. I was able to just click on the YouTube configuration, choose H.264 compression and got successful video screenshots on my first try. There is very reasonably priced pro version but this no fuss version is exactly what I wanted for casual, occasional use.
Easy to use, creates compact files, and just works fine. I did several video tutorials for clients, and the results were excellent.
Considering the price, this is a bargain!
iShowU is a great little app. I used it for our screencast tutorials for one of our products a few years back. I did a quick tutorial for a new product the other day on a MacBook with OS X 10.6 and iShowU was just fabulous again. Will be doing a series of tutorials again.
More than 100% CPU usage is not such a tough trick if you have two CPU's... (and, depending on how you calculate even if you just have multiple cores on a single chip).
Nice product but BIG system resource hog... on dual core Macbook pros, a 24 fps capture with audio uses over 100% CPU and causes the fans to spin up constantly.
I'm trying to record my keynote because the built-in recording feature doesn't record my transitions but this uses 150% CPU according to activity monitor, and that's on Intermediate Codec (supposedly the least CPU intensive). I've tried everything else on the list and they all run at over 100% so my keynote lags. I'm using an intel imac (1.83 ghz) btw.
Whenever I record a movie (1024x768 dimensions) and play the result back in Quicktime, the maximum frame rate I get is 5fps. Of course, I set the maximum frame rate 5 to 30 in iShowU...
I used the Animation codec.
What must I do to get a decent frame rate of at least (!) 15 fps?
If iShowU can't do this, it is no serious competition for SnapZ Pro.
Why not send your detailed report to the developer?
Write the details of configurations of your Mac and software settings. The MacUpdate review page isn't right for writing your trouble. Note that this application is still beta, doesn't promise much for its users. Since you decided to be involved in using beta, the developer will be willing to hear you say.
Setup the capture size to be a multiple of 32 (see the Preferences) - and then Edit the capture area, to make sure that the current size is snapped to a multiple of 32.
Intel machines have issues when this option is not set. Also, don't use H264 directly, since on Intel this is inefficient. It appears that it's not optimized on this platform yet.

(a) it's not "every few days"
(b) you don't have to update: the world will not explode
(c) plenty of users would prefer to have fixes released promptly
(d) all of the above.
Make your choice...

I'll do some thorough testing and probably buy afterwards.
Take care,
