Now you can more easily manage, activate and organize your existing font collection as well as find and experiment with new fonts. And when you're ready to add to your collection, you can view thousands of classic designs and the latest releases from independent foundries using the
What's New
Version 3.1.1:

New Features:

  • When a font is intentionally removed from a System Font folder (via Finder), it can now be removed from FontExplorer X Pro via the context menu in the font list. Previously it could only be removed by using the "Conflicts" feature
  • It is now possible to classify all the fonts in a set, folder or smart set by selecting the set, folder or smart set in the source list and start the classification

Resolved Issues:
  • Permanently activated fonts were not activated after a system startup or restart unless FontExplorer X Pro was started
  • FontExplorer X Pro only started in the Mac user account that originally installed the software package. An "Unauthorized Bundle" message was shown when started by other Mac user accounts (e.g. after "Fast-user Switching" or "Quick Install" installations)
  • An incorrect warning message was shown when exporting font previews
  • Font Information Window: When the "Show missing characters" option in the "Characters" panel was activated, the missing characters were not shown in red
  • Various user interface issues in the French language version of FontExplorer X Pro
  • Generated "Smart Set" titles did not show detailed format information when using "Format" as the criteria
  • Several issues around scanning PDF documents for fonts (crashes, no fonts found, etc.)
  • When a communication error occurred while attempting to send feedback to Linotype, closing the error dialog with "Don't try" would also close the Feedback window containing your message
  • After updating from version 1.2.3 to 3.1 an "Attempt to mutate immutable object…" error sometimes occurred which prevented FontExplorer X Pro from starting up when the system language was set to German
  • Font Conflicts: Previous scan results were not cleared when a new scan was started for "Fonts listed in FEX but deleted in Finder"
  • Kerning was not shown in the preview or detailed preview although the font contained kerning information. See also "Known Issues"
  • Authentication was required to clean the system font caches although Admin-free mode was activated
  • Mac OS X 10.7: If full-screen mode was active when FontExplorer X Pro was quit, the main window would open in a standard-size window when the application was restarted
  • Fonts would occasionally sort incorrectly in Group Font Family view. This resulted in the inability to jump directly to a font by keying the first character in the name
Known Issues:
  • Mac OS X 10.7 only: System Font collections - Rename a collection, add a font, remove a collection requires a restart of FontExplorer X Pro before the changes are shown in the source list
  • OS X 10.6 only: Fonts with # in their filename will not appear in FontExplorer X when they are located in /Library/Fonts. When imported into FontExplorer X Pro or FontExplorer X Server they cannot be activated nor will they display a preview. Resolved with Mac OS X 10.7.x
  • OS X 10.6 and 10.7 only: Kerning is not shown in the preview on Postscript fonts and some pairs in some OpenType fonts. Kerning is correctly shown in the detailed preview
  • After fast user switching FontExplorer X Pro refreshes the fonts in order to ensure that any System Font changes made by other users are available to all users on that machine. When doing this, the FontExplorer X Pro main window will always come to the foreground
  • When attempting to overwrite FontExplorer X Pro with a newer version, a "Fatal Error … unauthorized bundle" message may appear when there is a problem with permissions on the file you are attempting to replace. Should this occur, delete the older version of FontExplorer X and re-copy the newer version to your Applications folder
  • Mac OS X 10.5.x only (Resolved with Mac OS X 10.6): Removing font suitcases from a System Collection may cause FontExplorer X Pro to crash if some of the fonts in the suitcase are not activated. This may also occur when resolving conflicts and the font suitcase is contained in a System Collection
when using Mac OS X 10.5.6 - Activate or deactivate the entire suitcase and then remove the suitcase from the collection when using Mac OS X 10.5.8 - Move the fonts you wish to keep to a new System Collection, then delete the System Collection containing the suitcase font
Known PlugIn Issues:
  • Adobe Illustrator CS3, CS4 & CS5: If an Adobe Illustrator document contains a placed PDF or illustrator document with embedded fonts, an incorrect font request will occur with the status missing. Activate any fonts that the document may require and ignore the incorrect requests by clicking on the Done button.
  • FontExplorer X Pro will not auto-start for an Adobe or Quark document when the Mac user account is ma
  • Photoshop CS5 crashes when the FontExplorer X Pro plug-in is installed but FontExplorer X Pro or its license is missing. Solution: Remove the FontExplorer X Pro Plug-in
  • Font activation with Adobe Photoshop CS3/CS4/CS5: Situation - Fonts have been activated by FontExplorer X Pro (automatically or manually) after starting the program Adobe Photoshop CS3, CS4 or CS5. Selecting a text layer in Photoshop will cause a message to appear stating that the fonts are missing for the text layer and font substitution will occur. Continue? This message should be responded to with "OK". Activated fonts will be correctly displayed and not substituted.
Resolved Issues for FontExplorer X Server Users and Server Administrators:
  • Fonts uploaded to the FontExplorer X Server version 1.6 were sometimes missing after restarting the server. This could also be seen after restoring a backup or after server replication, both of which require a server restart
  • Fixed an issue where login was slow when connecting to servers with many nested sets and folders
  • Server error messages were not shown correctly when the language was set to French
  • LDAP directory was not displayed correctly when accessing Open Directory (Mac client only)
  • With "Hide Library" enabled, users with "Write" permissions on Sets were able to select File>Import
  • Connection between server and client was periodically lost during font upload/download
  • After a long connection (more than 8 hour) users were not notified that their login had expired and were forced to quit the client in order to log in again
  • In the LDAP Configure Domains window, the Domain Name field allowed entry of IP addresses. An error is now displayed when attempting to save the configuration
  • In the LDAP Configure Domains window, the Domain Name field was labeled "IP or Hostname" in the German and French translations. This has been changed to "Domain Name" (German: "Domänen-Name:" French: "Nom de Domaine")
  • After upgrades of server with LDAP Authentication enabled, administrators were not automatically directed to LDAP Configure Domains window and instructed to enter domain information
  • Windows server panel Backup Destination now allows selection of a network directory for backup
  • Offline usage information in the small info panel is not displayed accurately when not logged in to the FontExplorer X Server
  • LDAP Synchronization would occasionally assign users to the wrong group

Known Issues for FontExplorer X Server Users and Server Administrators:
  • Due to changes to better handle concurrent user load, server upload and download times may be slower than those seen with FontExplorer X Server version 1.5
Version 3.1.1:

New Features:

  • When a font is intentionally removed from a System Font folder (via Finder), it can now be removed from FontExplorer X Pro via the context menu in the font list. Previously it could only be removed by using the "Conflicts" feature
  • It is now possible to classify all the fonts in a set, folder or smart set by selecting the set, folder or smart set more...

Fontexplorer X Pro has always been an asset, saving application load times and organization of fonts, however they seem to just have long standing bugs with updates being few and far apart.

The current issue which is causing an annoyance is the Missing Font issue with certain CS5 products. The prompt comes up twice for each document stating you have a series of missing fonts. If opening 5 documents simulateneously, that's 10 prompts! They simply tell you to hit "Done" twice and ignore the issue. If you view their release notes much of the resolution for similar problems has been to simply ignore it. If it is so easy to ignore it, why not actually fix the problem!

When Illustrator CS5 requests a font which has linked pdfs/documens it makes font requests like "AYNBAA+FuturaStd." Six random characters followed by a plus then the Font name it is requesting. Why doesn't FontExplorer simply request and activate the font after the plus symbol?

Here is the actual release note that has plagued Font Explorer since 3.1:

Adobe Illustrator CS3, CS4 & CS5: If an Adobe Illustrator document contains a placed PDF or illustrator document with embedded fonts, an incorrect font request will occur with the status missing. Activate any fonts that the document may require and ignore the incorrect requests by clicking on the Done button.

I truly hoped they would have fixed this in a minor update such as 3.1.1.

I'm still using FontExplorer X version 1.2.3 which works perfectly on OS X 10.7.2. I have over 4,000 fonts in my library and have never had any problems, which is why I keep coming back to it after having tried all of the other font management applications.

It appears that Macupdate and the developer no longer offer the free version. I suppose that way customers have no choice but to buy the full version, which is a shame.

The only problem I've had with the free version is with Asian typefaces and I'm using it with Snow Leopard, so I wonder if there could be other problems.

Otherwise, it seems to work fine for Roman character sets.

From what I've read, FontXChange converts fonts from one format to another and is not a font manager. How can it be "better" if it does something that is completely different?

Linotype are still overcharging those in the UK.

At today's exchange rate, $79 is £50.82. At checkout, the price is £59, which is close enough, but then adding German VAT (compulsory) it shoots up to £70.21. That's $109.12. Why do we have to buy it in Sterling and pay German VAT if it's available in the States?

Been trying to contact their support since last year (October) -- they just replied with one automated message saying to check some things and then nothing after that.

Funny how all those major Mac font app players have similar problems. They all have similar bugs, they all refuse to fix anything, they all ignore their customers, they all charge $100 for their "software".

Oh wait, it's not funny.

Sometimes in photoshop CS5, when opening file with fonts, it hangs photoshop untill i quit FEX.

Also searches plain one layer png images for fonts, downloaded from net

I was looking for a program to manage my fonts and started with Fontcase, because I liked the approach and thought it to suit the price/quality ratio for my ' not so big' collection. Later I was given a large collection and then it didn't work well anymore.

Evaluated FontAgent and FontExplorer and am for some time now an enthusiastic user of the latter. It is a very solid, stable program with nice options. Font activation and deactivation from Adobe CS apps works nice and there are nice ways in organizing fonts logically in folders en sets.

Minor points for me are the long startup times and slow response during use (with a very large collection), otherwise it's fast enough. Support is slow in answering or not answering at all. That's a pity. (Based on 2 support requests).

Besides, a fontfile renaming function is missing.

Is anyone else having this problem:

Since upgrading to version 3 from 2.5, whenever I create/edit/delete any font sets, folders, add comments or any other metadata, if I quit the program and restart my computer it undoes all of the changes I made during the previous session. FEX still remembers what fonts I've imported or deleted from my database but beyond that, I'm unable to make any changes to it.

I am running OS X 10.6.8 and managing around 20,000 fonts if that helps. 90% are keyworded using the comments field (I started before the Classify feature was added). I've invested thousands of hours organizing everything, so the thought of losing that work makes me very sad :(

Just as a follow-up, I have now tried EVERYTHING to fix this, without success. I'm 99% sure the problem isn't the database or even the file/folder permissions. It's the application itself. Or else OS X 10.6.8. SOMETHING is conflicting with FontExplorer.

I completely removed FontExplorer and reinstalled it under a new admin account after doing a permissions repair. I've tried reimporting my fonts several ways, including restoring from a full backup and by importing them to a new database without any of the old metadata.

None of it seems to make a difference. I can still import and delete fonts from FontExplorer but beyond that, I can't do anything – add comments, category information, create, delete or add to font sets – anything.

poly1 replied on 11 Aug 2011
Ugh, this is definitely a problem with OS X. Maybe with the ACLs. I can now create smart collections and folders again, and I can add comments and category info to system fonts (anything appearing with a lock icon), but nothing else. No fonts I import will save any changes.

I remember back when I was still using Suitcase, Extensis used to take MONTHS to update its auto-activation plugins every time a new version of Adobe CS was released. I don't understand it. How difficult is it for the developer to modify/update existing code?

The vast majority of people using Suitcase, FontExplorer, etc. are using it in combination with at least 1 Adobe program. Why aren't Linotype, Extensis, etc. giving their developers pre-release beta versions of CS like many third-party developers to test on ahead of time? Plug-in updates should take weeks, not months.

I don't mean to sound rude, but CS5.5 cam out in April. FontAgent Pro released a compatible update in July. It's the middle of August – how much longer do customers have to wait before Linotype releases a FontExplorer update?

I have pretty much tried all of the 'holy' trinity of Font Managers (Yea, I'm not counting Apple's built-in FB): FAP, SF, FEP - I was amazed at Font Agent's Pro ability to keep up with our maddening pace of fonts and suitcases until Snow Leopard - after this, there that FontExplorer has been pretty much leading the way in our stability day-to-day work. Still a little bit buggy but offering really nice features. Fonts turn on when they are supposed to, Apps don't lock out, etc... Now, with 2.5.1 if Linotype could only fix the issue of the main program automatically launching the moment one of the CS5 apps 'requests' a font, we would be much happier. If anyone has a fix for this, please let me know. Otherwise, still not a total 10 in my book.

Dear Stephen Moye,

thank you very much for your email.

We tested FontExplorer X Pro 2.5 with MacOS X 10.6.3 and find out that it could happens after update that active fonts are not "visible" for system after update. What you can do is to create one smart set with "active fonts" parameter. Now deactivate all activated fonts and afterwards active them again. Now all your fonts should be "visible" to the system.

Should you have any questions or additional requests, please feel free to contact me.

Downgraded the InDesing plugin and now efverything works just fine.

I am surprised that not a lot of people are experiencing this problem. Or not a lot of people are reading this and/or are not experiencing the same problem...

Anyway, no news from Linotype yet. I mailed the problem a few days ago so I guess there are not a lot of complaints and I'm sure its related to my system which is a Early 2009 Mac Pro Quad core 2.93 Ghz with Mac OS X 10.6.2 btw.

Great app for fonts. I just love it... except for one small thing. I have a set I call my Base Set that has the fonts I use on a daily basis. Many times but not always (and this is the part that is annoying), only some of the fonts in this set get activated on startup. It's never consistent which fonts are activated. I can't tell this until I am part way into a graphic assignment I am working on and it asks to activate certain fonts that I know are in that set.

Anyone else having this problem? I'm on a quad 2.5gHz Mac Pro, 4GB RAM, 2X 500GB HD, OS X 10.5.5.
