every version upgrade has gone steadily downhill for me. I "upgraded" from 3.5 and even working with their support team still hasn't solved all the new issues that seem to get introduced with every new version. Get your act together. Man...

FontExplorer Pro says that it is activating certain fonts, but when I open the Illustrator or InDesign document with those fonts, those applications say that the fonts are missing, and displays them as boxes (Illustrator) or alternative fonts (InDesign). And, when I followed the company's spotlight and cache recommendations, I almost deleted all my fonts.

So far, the only way to fix the problem without accidentally removing fonts, is to trash and re-install the affected fonts from a backup disk. I don't know, from day to day, which fonts will be affected. I didn't have this problem until I upgraded to version 4.2.

(Incidentally, I was happy with my earlier version of FontExplorer Pro, and quite annoyed at being forced to upgrade. Other applications don't suddenly stop working in order to force the user to buy an upgrade.

This used to be the best font management software up until version 3. Since then its just been a downward spiral. Each version seems like fixes rather than upgrade. Suitcase Fusion on the other hand was crap until version 3 and has just gotten better with age. I strongly suggest everyone give Suitcase a second chance.

Your review and recommendation is very helpful. My experience with FontExplorer Pro matches yours, and I am quite ready to give Suitcase Fusion another try.

The current version of Suitcase is slick fast and never misses a font and is still the only one to show the non western font faces in the lists.

I just lost 3 hours of debugging InDesign 9.2 (CC).
The Fontexplorer plug-in was the culprit. I deninstalled it.
I was not able to open certain documents and one document got corrupted by this (luckily I had a backup).
So, if InDesign crashes and you find lines with "com.adobe.InDesign.Font Manager" in the Console crash log, remove the plug-in.
This is the second time that plug-in caused major trouble.
Monotype would be well advised to test their releases more thoroughly.

Okay, so for me, the problem with fonts managed by FontExplorer not appearing in CS6 applications has been fixed with version 4.1.1. There was no need to clean font caches or anything else of that ilk. So apparently the issue brought up with the 4.1 update was indeed a bug.

FontExplorer Pro version 4.2 says that it is activating certain fonts, but when I open the Illustrator or InDesign document with those fonts, those applications say that the fonts are missing, and displays them as boxes (Illustrator) or alternative fonts (InDesign). (I am running CS5.) When I followed the company's spotlight and cache recommendations, I almost deleted all my fonts.

So far, the only way to fix the problem without accidentally removing fonts, is to trash and re-install the affected fonts from a backup disk. I don't know, from day to day, which fonts will be affected. I didn't have this problem until I upgraded to version 4.2.

To NinaS: The problem you describe in a regular occurrence with fonts. It has become a routine for me to trash font families whenever one or more of the set fail to appear in CS applications. Font corruption (I prefer to see it as wear-and-tear) is inevitable and you are very wise to keep a backup copy of all your fonts.

I recommend that you trash the fonts from within FontExplorer and then reinstall accordingly, to retain the integrity of your font catalog.

The task can be daunting, and in my case with over 8,000 fonts in my library, tedious. Unfortunately font utilities like Font Doctor do not usually work to detect which fonts are starting to go bad. You just have to remain vigilant.

This latest upgrade (4.1) is causing all kinds of problems with auto activation in InDesign. InDesign just 'hangs' now when FontExplorer X Pro 4.1 tries to load fonts.

Yep, had same problem. Cleared font caches and restarted solved the problem for me.

I also could not activate fonts manually. As Revco did, I too cleared application and system font caches (with FE). Restarted the computer but also had to repair disk permissions with Disk Utility. Now, everything works again.

Note: I did not notice FE quitting before the update was applied nor force a restart after the update. So, probably old and new code causing confusion.

My problem's been solved thanks to Revco's solution.

Clearing font caches made FEP-activated fonts visible to most applications EXCEPT for Adobe CS6 apps. I had to uninstall and revert back to version 4.0.2.

One thing I noticed after installing 4.1 is that FontExplorerXAutoload.app disappeared from my login items list. (Version 4.0.2 automatically added it to startup items.) Once I launched version 4.0.2, it reappeared in the list. I wonder if manually adding it to the startup items will solve the problem. Unfortunately, I don’t have time right now to deal with this so I will have to stay with 4.0.2 for now.

Have had same FE 4.1 issue (Using Indesign CS6, 8.02) . Deangles (& Revcos') solution fixed the problem.

I love this software BUT ever since upgrading to Mavericks it's had some series issues for me... autostart always hangs on startup... activated fonts seem to disappear and reappear... and now with the update to 10.9.1... FE crashes when i try to activate or deactivate fonts - which renders it pretty much useless...
I think that at this point Linotype should have all the wrinkles out of this thing in regards to Mavericks compatibility.
Badly done Lynotype, badly done indeed!

Since updating to 10.9.1 FE 4.0.3 crashes when activating or deactivating fonts... which renders it useless at this point... sigh...

As a long time FontAgentPro user, I decided to give FontExplorer a try so I installed the trial. I find it has some serious advantages over FAP with font organization and library optimizations. I also like the interface, however I think the list font is rather small. That said, it also has some major shortcomings that make me go back to FAP - first, the app launches every time a font needs auto-activating, and it throws up a dialog box for me to confirm the activation. FAP just shows a quick popup window and does the activation behind the scenes without the app needing to open and no user interaction required. FontExplorer's Classify command is also lacking - FAP added in a lot of the font classification info automatically but in Explorer most of the info is missing. And after I add the info myself there is no apparent quick way to perform a search of a specific type of font, unlike FAP. It's also frustrating to create a "default set" of fonts... you can add them to the Permanently Activated set, but if you need to disable one of those fonts momentarily, it gets removed from the set. I can't figure out why that's useful. So although I feel FontExplorer is more polished, I have to give FAP the edge for my needs.
