This functionality is built-in to Snow Leopard. Just option-click the volume icon.

Wahou !!! just thanks for that tip !… never red that anywhere.

Even though I really appreciate the time the devs put in making such usefull apps, I must admit that having it runing natively by SL is great.

Thanks again for the tip and thanks to the devs to make this function available to OS anterior to 10.6

Problem with SoundMenu 1.5 with Snow Leopard was with 64 bits systems. On 10.6 Core Solo (32bits) that I have, SoundMenu works great... But on 10.6 Xeon or Core 2 Duo (64bits) it would not load as SystemUIServer (menubar) is 64 bits.

The problem is fixed on version 1.7.

Worked great for me up to 10.5.4. Now keeps disappearing. Is there a new version coming?

For the moment no new release is under work.

But SoundMenu works great on my intel based Mac under 10.5.6... So I don't think you have a problem with soundmenu itself...

Detour is PPC. It will _run_ on a Mac Pro, presumably, but not as well as a universal binary would.

Why not try Detour? It's discontinued, but Rogue Amoeba still provide it as a download, and it's worked perfectly for me thus far:

This fix isn't working for me on my Mac mini (recently purchased) with the released Snow Leopard. I installed the new MenuCracker and and Sound Menu, logged out and back in and double-clicked MenuCracker and then Sound Menu. Nothing appeared in the menu bar. I have had success with MenuMeters, though. The 10.6 compatible version seems to work fine, but not SoundMenu (or perhaps MenuCracker is the issue?)

In order to make SoundMenu to work on Snow Leopard 10.6 you need to :
- Download new Snow Leopard version of Menucracker : http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15658/menucracker
- Put the menucracker in your Home Folder under ~/Library/Bundles/ (replace old menucracker.menu)
- Log out and log in or "killall SystemUIServer"
- Double click on menucracker.menu
- Double click on SoundMenu
