NetSentry runs in the background while you use your Web browser. Web traffic passes through NetSentry before reaching your browser, allowing NetSentry to decide what to filter out and what to let through. Filtering rules are fully user-customizable.

One of the most useful functions of HTTP request filtering is ad-blocking. NetSentry comes pre-loaded with an extensive list of advertising domains and URL patterns. NetSentry will block the majority of Web advertising right out of the box, with zero configuration. Ad-blocking can also make pages load faster by eliminating undesired bandwidth-hungry content.

Why not just use CSS-adblocking? It's free and doesn't use any extra resources.

Because with CSS ad blocking you simply choose to not display the ads AFTER having downloaded them.

Whereas with a real ad blocker the ads would get blocked before they get downloaded. This is important to some people.

If you're a Mozilla/Firefox user, just install the Adblock extension (click "Get more extensions", under the Tools > Extensions menu.

Honestly, why have a full-time process eating up your machine's resources, when it's only used when you surf the web? Just get a better browser! Even Safari has adblock extension capability - I'm not sure where the free ones are though...

Nice and clean but Privoxy is an open source solutions that does the same for free, and is also extensively customizable.

It's true that Privoxy is very extensible and it offers more configuration options than NetSentry. NetSentry's advantages are 1) being infinitely more user-friendly, and 2) performance. NetSentry will not incur any noticeable lag while filtering pages, whereas Privoxy generally will. As a former Privoxy user, I wrote NetSentry to make ad blocking accessible to all Mac users.

Thanks for your reply
I will test netSentry over the next few days to see if its performance is really better than Privoxy, which I find already acceptable. I will post my review in the next few days with the results, especially if they concur with your observations (as I do not like to write about other programs extensively on review pages, but here I felt that Privoxy deserved a mention).
