Jomic is a viewer for comic books stored in CBZ, CBR, and PDF files. Features include a two page mode, full-screen, caching and support for several image formats (PNG, JFIF/JPEG, TIFF, and GIF). It is Open Source software distributed under the GNU General Public License.
What's New
Version 0.9b31:

This release fixes several bugs related to image reading and rendering, improves PDF support, continues batch conversion of comics even if one comic fails to convert, and improves the look and feel under Mac OS X 10.6

Changes:

  • Fixed excessive CPU usage if an image could not be read due to certain error conditions.
  • Fixed spurious broken images if a comic ZIP was created using Mac OS X's compress in Finder. For every image like some.png, compress adds a file __MACOSX/.some.png containing the resource fork [Bug 3285681].
  • Fixed help menu under Mac OS X, which automatically got a search bar that never found anything and disabled all other help menu entries.
  • Fixed size and location of dialog to set blur options. If the dialog now has a sensible size when opened for the first time and remembers its size and location between application launches.
  • Fixed missing images for web start.
  • Changed comic conversion to continue with next comic in case one comic fails.
  • Added possibility to open and convert more PDF comics than before by upgrading to PDFBox 1.5.
  • Changed memory available for Java from 256 MB to 1 GB in order to cope with PDFBox's increased memory requirements when reading complex PDF documents.
  • Improved look and feel under Mac OS X 10.6 by updating to Quaqua 6.5.
  • Changed internal image reading, rendering and filtering to use the Java standard library instead of JAI. Ideally you should not notice any difference. Some things you might notice: Certain broken images cannot be read anymore ("Booh! Hiss!" - Fix 'em!). Detection and processing of broken images is slightly faster. Application launch is slightly faster. The user interface is a little snappier. Certain error messages are less incomprehensible.

Doesn't work on Lion 10.7.2. The menu bar is grayed out.

Una aplicación sencilla y eficaz. Tal vez las haya mejores, pero con esta no necesito comprobarlo. Gracias!

A great application for the job. Simply put, you can't beat the price, and the developer continues to improve it.

Jomic is a great program! Wonderful app. The only problem I've had is when I started it for the first time, I got an error message that just said "null," and the program quit. After trying to start it several times with the same problem, I dragged a .zip file to the icon, and it has worked perfectly since.

the only problem I'm still having with jomic is that maybe 50% of the time when I open a archive (I don't know if it happens more with either type) it will not just open it and instead will prompt me for which file I want to open. Sort of annoying to have to navigate through the directories to get to a file I just opened. Otherwise it's all good!

Version 0.9.10 was just released. Among other things, opening a comic from the Finder should now work reliably.

This works great for me.

I like it much better then FFView or Comical. Appears faster and I have less problems with cbr and cbz files.

Great work.

um, yah. went to the download site for the java 3d, made sure it installed, and still nothing. can't really evaluate software that won't start up, so that's about it. hmm.

As pointed out in the forum, it seems that the JAI installation fails on Mac OS X 10.3.8 (though it still claims it was successful). To work around that, there is a release with all JAI related stuff already included. You can download it from .

Several people reported that they cannot get JAI to work with Mac OS 10.3.8, and thus Jomic won't work. See the related discussion in the forum for details.

Works well. One question: when Jomic extracts the comic, where does it extract it too? Can the directory be selected? I noticed a considerable amount of space after extracting a comic, but could not locate it, although it was viewable just fine.

By default, the cache is in ~/Library/Caches/jomic and grows up to 256 MB. You can change that by adding for example the following lines to ~/Library/Preferences/jomic.properties:

cacheDir=/Volumes/SomeOldDrive/Caches/jomic
archiveCacheSizeInMb=4096

It's not documented in the manual, but it's been like that for ages and I don't have any intention to change it. Maybe someday there will be a GUI for the cache settings.
