well, don't bother buying this software. or any other radical breeze software. the author has decided to abandon the mac platform and switch to linux.
unfortunate, as they made decent software. but don't waste your money, since they probably won't update anymore.

Just wanted to mention that Locator (freeware) is a excellent app to index CDs (avoid to go insert your CDs one by one to find that file you recorded somewhere) and MP3 CDs (that's great to find a song as fast as on itunes but on a CD, without again inserting your cds one by one)
I haven't tried Illumination, so i am sure the GUI is nicer and it has extra features compare to Locator, but if you look for a simple indexing app, Locator may save you some money... Once again, i am sure though that Illumination must have adventages on Locator (for exemple Locator hasn't been update in a LONG LONG time). Everything has a price :)

Who needs indexes?
Xscan at Rixstep. Scans an entire hard drive in maybe 15 seconds. No indexes. Looks for evil files too - vulnerabilities. Why indexes?

Illumination lets you search the contents of discs (CDs, Network drives, etc) that are not currently connected to your Mac. Xscan searches the files that are available at that given moment.

It crapped out trying to index my main boot HD partition. I'm gonna look elsewhere for a file search app better than this pile of cow dung.

Could you be a little more specific other than "crapped out"?
Radical Breeze has a good history of listening to customer feedback (both bug reports and feature suggestions). And, if you really are having a problem, we'd love to know more about it so we can fix it.
It works as advertised, albeit glacially.
I suggest that readers give DiskTracker2.3.1 a whirl.
Meanwhile I cannot find where Illumination's stored index is. It is probably a huge space waster.

Marc Gray : What part of Illumination works slow for you? We have tested here searching through relatively huge amounts of files at incredibly fast speeds. If you are noticing something different please send us an email with detailed info so we can look into it.
And the index files, which are definitely not space wasters (they are pretty small files), are stored in ~/Library/Application Support/Illumination.

Regarding the person who posted below - you should try this version 1.5 - a lot has been changed and even if indexing takes a while, once you have your disks indexed it runs awesome.

It took 20 minutes when I tried to catalog my system disk, and it was still just eating a lot of CPU time...
I could only get it to work with very small disks, and that was already super slow.
It only catalogs the name, size, a few dates, and path. Not very much, actually. Searching is also pretty slow.
Can't compare to CDFinder at all!!!
Version 1.0.1 (just released) is substantially faster all around (including indexing and, especially, searching).
We are commited to making this a fantastic product, so if you have any features you'd like to see in Illumination, just let us know.

Uh, don't compare this to CDFinder. CDFinder can do a LOT more than Illumination, but then the latter is just version 1.0. Who knows what it will be able to do in the future.
For now, I stick with CDFinder, as it can read a lot more information!

This is a well designed and incredibly efficient tool. The days of inserting 12 cd's to find a single file are gone thanks to Illumination. Well worth purchasing for anyone who has any trouble managing all their data (so pretty much everyone ;)).
[Version 1.0]
