DeskCover solves an unrecognized yet widespread aesthetic error in Mac OS X. On lightly colored or busy desktop pictures, icon names become nearly unreadable. DeskCover inserts a customizable translucent sheet between your icons and the desktop picture. This sheet automatically resizes itself upon launch to fit all desktop icons within the sheet. The color and translucency of the sheet are modifiable from the preferences window, which can be accessed through a menu bar item.

used to be one of my favorite desktop enhancers until 10.6 found it's way on my harddisk.

deskcover adds it's menubar icon, but it's always invisible on the desktop. only when renaming a file on the desktop, deskcover slides in from the right, and moves back out when name editing is finished.

Wish it would work with Snow Leopard.

Only problem now is that it won't open on my G5 dual 2 tower. Seems like a good idea though. Any suggestions?

I would like to get DeskCover working for you. What version of Mac OS X are you running?

I'm using OSX 10.4.11 on a Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5
Instead of opening it flashes and disappears.

DeskCover 2.0 does automatic updates using the FSEvents API which is only available in Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard".

I've prepared a cut-down version of DeskCover that should work on 10.4 Tiger, but automatic updating has been replaced by a "Resize Now" option in the menu bar. All other 2.0 features are still available. You can download it here.

as far as i can tell, this software title is discontinued. found this on the homepage:

"Goodnight, Danicsoft.

August 17, 2004

Due to personal and professional time commitments, further work at Danicsoft has been indefinitely postponed. I no longer have enough time available to devote to Danicsoft and do it justice.

I apologize for any convenience this may cause you. I know that some of you use Danicsoft software on a regular basis, and I offer my regrets that I will not be providing updates or support any more.

To all those of you who supported Danicsoft while it was active, thank you. To those of you who are first timers, I hope you come back again some day and find us back in business.

If any developers are interested in taking over one or more of my software programs, they are welcome to contact me.

I do have plans to continue working on Danicsoft in the future, bringing bigger and better shareware to my beloved Mac community. I will return. :)

Sincerely,
Nic Waller"

and all other links lead to a 404.

I happen to love this. I helps me organize my desktop and looks cool! It's now easer to find what i need on my desktop. Can't wait until they allow me to put it in other areas but for now it's cool. And much easier and smarter than changing the desktop picture.

having recently altered my desktop picture to add translucent panels, i understand the potential value of this application. perhaps, providing more options will allow this to be more usable. i suggest allowing multiple panels in both horizontal and vertical orientations. great first effort though.

Nice idea. I'd like it if it actually worked. However, unless I use "drag mode" it automatically sizes itself to a quarter-inch strip along the right side of the main monitor. Needless to say, none of my icons are in that strip.

Features: two. Does not auto-size & manually re-sizing defeats the purpose, thus the two.

Ease of Use: Easy enough to manually re-size, but I shouldn't have to, thus the four.

Value: does not work as advertised, thus the two.

Stability: Didn't crash while or eat massive CPU chunks whilst testing it, thus the five.

hey I read your review of desk cover, and was wondering if you could e-mail me the cover since it has been discontinued.

Nice idea and enhancement. But changing your desktop wallpaper achieves basically the same effect. Doing so, you don't need to run any additional app like this...
