I have used mirage since it was TVpaint 10 years ago on the amiga. That amount of maturity in a paint application is a rarity, so don't let the 1.2 version number fool you.

Mirage has its roots in painting. Speed was paramount to ensure the fidelity when capturing an artist's brush strokes. In general, the availability of tools and brushes may appear spartan. Whhat they do offer is alof of flexibility. they also offer the artist a concise and straightforward toolset to develop one's own style. This is in contrast to other apps which have hundreds of different watercolor brushes. mirage has just one. however, I use the paint and smear/drag tools to "create" my own watercolor.

Its also a video animation package that supports PS style layering. So while many have used it like aftereffects to pull keys and do compositing. I think the real potential of the package is a poor mans ink and painter.

I beleive this package has also a convenience of drawing tools that predates the Adobe standard that separates the photo editor from the illustration application. You will find a convenient selection of graphic tools as wells as editing tools. Many of the tools in mirage owns its heritage to the era of great paint and animation software like Deluxe Paint. So you will find tools that were made for animation, not print.
the interface is a bit dated, but that does not interfere with the use of the app. Don;t miss out on at least DL the demo and expanding your horizons while visiting a bit of history in Computer Animation.....
