AC3 Codec is a QuickTime component which allows the playback of AC3 audio in AVI files. The component uses the liba52 library for the AC3 decompressing, you can get more information on this library at http://liba52.sourceforge.net/.

Requirements
PPC, QuickTime 6.0 or later, DivX 5.x.

Doesn't seem to let me open .ac3 audio only files. QT claims an unrecognised file format.

Hey all, bear in mind this codec wont work with the Intel macs. The intel version of the codec is here:

I believe this now works with the latest QT update. If you go to the product page, it now redirects to the sourceforge page:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/qtac3codec/

I didn't know if this was the old version or the new one, but I installed it as a test and it works fine with some DivX AC3 files. It's creation date is the 8th of December. Here's the download page (sort of hard to navigate to on sourceforge):

Always crashes QT 7.0.3 !!!

Agreed, just updated to 7.0.2 and the codec no longer works. Audio is patchy, and cuts out after a few seconds. Worked great with 7.0.1.

After searching the mac, 3ivx and Divx forums, this one will actually play those .avi files in quicktime! And very simple to install. Pass on the word.

it works like a charm, now all .avi files are able to play in QT. its awesome.
