Tidy restores the classic Mac method of icon clean-up for OS X users.
In the Finder there's a command "Clean up", which can be used to position the icons of a Finder window (in Icon view) in a regular grid. But the distance between the icons is very large under Mac OS X, much larger than under classic Mac OS. Under Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) the distance is even larger than under Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar), which makes this feature often almost useless because of the waste of space.
Tidy will also tidy up the icons, like the Finder, but it is much more powerful. With Tidy

Love this little application! Don't understand why others seem to have a problem with this. Works great for me, instantly aligning my icons however I want. I've been looking for a little app just like this for years, as it is such a pain to do in manually, to get all the icons visible with a single window.

It seems like a Realbasic template, you click, nothing happens, you got to fill with code... Here's what we got, a completly useless program which can't tidy desktop, nor Applications folder nor your mp3/videos like the author said.
And generally you call 1.1 a working version of your program, take example of VLC, a perfect player still in 0.7.
Oh i've forget ! You got to pay for this...

Tidy works in most cases. As noted in the Tidy FAQ, The Finder has some bugs: the Finder refuses to align certain files or folders ("packages" like many MacOSX Applications). So the problems which are reported here are probably just caused by these issues of the Finder. I've reported these bugs already to Apple, so hopefully they will fix it. But when organizing all your images, movies, text files or MP3 files, Tidy should work without problem.

Has anybody else tried this? I can't seem to make it do anything except move one or two files in a selected folder around.
I've just found out, that the Finder refuses to rearrange the icons when the files are located in the FileVault. So if you're using the FileVault of MacOSX, Tidy is probably of little use. When not using FileVault, it should work well, but please nevertheless read the FAQ or the "Readme" that comes with Tidy to learn more about the other limitations of the Finder which can affect Tidy.
Unfortunately all the problems with Tidy are caused by the Finder itself.

Tidy will also tidy up the icons, like the Finder, but it is much more powerful. With Tidy you can configure the horizontal and vertical distance between the icons in a wide range. Also there are several different grids, you can select how many columns of icons will be used. You can even move all sub folders to the top followed by all other icons, so all folder can be reached more easily (no more searching for a certain folder which is burried in tons of other files).
