Pixen is an innovative graphics editor for the Mac. It's designed from top to bottom for pixel artists-people who make low-resolution raster art like the sprites you see in old video games. But it's great for artists of all arenas: Pixen is like a very powerful MSPaint or a simpler, more agile Photoshop. And best of all, it's Free!

Partial List of Major Features:
  • Advanced custom backgrounds support
  • Color palette with "smart" swapping capabilities
  • Grid customization
  • Tiled editing mode
  • Alignment crosshair
  • Full alpha support

The world's greatest program, with the world's greatest operational glitches.

I have great hopes for some promising future in this app, though, since there's some fresh activity in the project's github repository.

Anyone feeling emotional about this app's history, torpid development, contrasted by its great potentials and the fact that it's now moving forward again, should get involved by helping the developer reporting bugs and whatnot on github, really.

I'm holding my review until it's out of beta or stable enough to use prime time.

Wow… entering pixels width by hands. No layers reordering. Arrow cursor for drawing ? Quite disappointing.

You're right on the adjusting px width by hand, but layer reordering is definitely there.

Well it seems that i have some troubles with the app. I can neither make a new image nor a new animation. (3.5b3 & 10.6.8)

I had that same problem, but after downloading the file referenced in this issue/discussion thread, I was able to create new images & make animations: https://github.com/philippec/Pixen/issues/134

This version of Pixen is old, outdated and somewhat unstable. The original Pixen developers no longer update it. However, it has been released as open source and now lives on as an open source project on github.

Here is the link to the open source, more stable, updated vision:

A great, great program, very helpful. Only thing: On Snow Leopard it can't save images as *.ico and *.jpg. Any hints for that?

I also upgraded to 3.1b2, and I cannot save my .pxi images as .jpg anymore. Has anyone found a solution to this yet?

Pixen is now very stable with the new releases. I use it for making my icon. Also with such details it will ensure that the big pictures is not spoilt.

this is a great... toy

pixen looks like the personal project of a littler genius tha t knows very well whta a pixel artist need, but it still being in progress, its not a sustitute of photoshop (which have all the features of pixen and much more, of course) for professional workflow, but it´s very interesting for play with.

web icons and little square based pictures are now easy to do with pixen

very nice the reptile soft. (not seen in photoshop!)

Wow, crashing left and right on 10.4.7 on a Mini with Core Intel Duo.

Change settings >> crash
Change transparent background appearance >> crash
Change Button bar >> crash
Breathe >> crash

Hmmm... I'd not even call this a beta.

I like the new features, but not the unexpected and seemingly unrelated crashes of this version on my eMac 1.0 Ghz, Mac OS X 10.3.9. I hope this will be fixed in a next release. Otherwise, I'm very happy with this software.

I should add that the crashing only occurred with animation files, never with still images. Especially switching between cells with several layers each caused crashes.

Absolutely brilliant. I've been watching Pixen develop slowly and the last beta was still pretty sluggish for speed. This new 3.0 version is jaw dropping to me.

Flood fills with 0% opacity color works like I think it should - fills the color regardless of it being transparent. (other apps seem to think that transparent color shouldn't replace what is being filled...)
Whipped up a PNG to turn into an icon with a nice transparent background in no time tonight in a few short minutes without having to bother with alpha channel masks or anything.

Undo function can be a little slow to respond still but I am okay with it. I had no crashes or problems in 30 mins of use.

I can't wait to see future releases of Pixen. Reminds me of the good old days with DeluxePaint4.

avv3lenato had trouble on 04 Sep 2009
The last update make Pixen Snow Leopard compatible but remove the ability to move/copy/drag the cel from the upper film strip.
Now it is impossible to do even the simplest operation... as drag a cel back and forward.

I found three more bugs... Just for your information: Hi CPU usage when idle, “Export to image sequence…” not working anymore (ex. BMP export) and “Save as Gif” export only one layer of a layered animation sequence (it's an old bug; you have to manually merge all layers and then export)

Hope this will help you guys ;-)

tenkerasu had trouble on 26 May 2008
Okay, this is REALLY bad: I had just figured out how to do my very own .gif animation in Pixen, and I created a character blinking. I fiddled with the sizes, the length, and what-have-you on the frames, and I saved it, closed it, thought I was done. I uploaded it onto deviantART. I opened it again to change the size to make it my avatar for that website, and it not only kept closing on me, I couldn't touch anything I tried to work on, I couldn't resave it, because it would close, and then on something like the third time I reopened it, it completely deleted my .gifs. ALL OF THEM. I had like ten! You're lucky I had them backed up! I reopened them, AGAIN, and it just kept closing on me. What the hell. I have barely used this product, I mean, just for messing around making little tiny gifs that are way under 100 kbs, and it hates me. I deleted it because the program itself was taking up too much space on my HD. Thanks a LOT, guys. You seriously owe me one.

I was going to happily download Pixen, but it seems that their site has been infected with an HTML:Iframe worm according to the virus scanner at work (which I was going to download and burn the software to a disc for my Mac Pro). Can't seem to contact Open Sword about the issue with their site.

Great update! Only one thing:

When I'm closing an unsaved document, without wanting to save, I get the following doaligue message:

"KABOOM. Could not delete backup file "/private/vat/tmp/folders.501/TemporaryItems/PixenAutosave.pxi".

I had this problem in the previous (beta) version as well. I've tried to delete the preference file and I've also repaired permissions on my harddrive. Any ideas for a solution?

I love Pixen. ;)

Found out that it's just a bug in the French localization; bad nib file, may be just a typo or a missing file...
I just trashed the "French.lproj" folder.

Anyway, this one likes to crashhhhhhhh :)
I guess I have to dig; too many troubles.
The first gif I tried to open was empty, the second one had its RGB channels shifted by one px (beautiful effect though...)
