I like and trust Cocktail for many years. But I do have a major problem with it. Illustration of what I mean: the latest version has a new feature, “Enable AirDrop on Old Macs“. Curious about this, I looked on the developer’s website for some information. Nothing beyond a reference to the Help files associated with the program. So I went to these, pulled down the menu item, and all that’s there is a message “The selected topic is currently unavailable.” Thanks a lot, Maintain. I. m. h. o. it’s irresponsible to put out such a complex program with so many options without publishing detailed instructions for its use in the form of an owner’s manual. Is that too much to ask?
The description of this (and all other features and settings) is available in the Help files. Please choose Cocktail Help in the Help menu in Cocktail. This is the info from the help files (Network -> File Sharing):
Enable AirDrop on older Macs:
This setting lets you use AirDrop with older Macs that don't officially support it. Note that this setting causes AirDrop to fall back on an alternative method for communicating with other Macs so you must enable this setting on all your computers, even if they normally support AirDrop.
The developer now releases the Leopard version of Cocktail as freeware.
For consistency among my applications (as well as for economy), I have standardized the use of Leopard across my 3 desktop PowerPC Macs and my 1 Intel portable Mac. So, I can now run Cocktail for free.
But I so much like the developer's policy of releasing former versions as freeware than I bought a Family Pack license today as a token of support.
Someday in the future, when I get around to creating Snow Leopard and Lion partitions on my Intel Mac, I know that Cocktail will be there, ready to serve those partitions, as well as all future Mac OS versions, since the Maintain website says that:
"As of 15 August 2011 you will automatically receive a lifetime license when you purchase Cocktail. This means that when you buy the application you will also receive all future editions of Cocktail, for free!"
Cool! Now I'm covered all the way from Panther, Tiger, Leopard, (all freeware) through Snow Leopard, Lion, and any other big cats that come along in the future. What's not to like?
I have used Cocktail since its very early days and have found it stable and easy to use and have never regretted my original purchase. I have also never had a problem with getting quick support from the developer whenever I had questions. I use Applejack if I need to run in single user mode but for routine tasks, Cocktail is great (I have not switched to Lion yet nor will I until I feel a need for it).
And no, I am not being paid to say this. I just like the app.
FYI. The links for other versions of Cocktail at the top of the page indicate that the SL version is 4.9.4. Actually, Maintain released version 4.9.5 for SL back in October. The download link above does, however, download the current 4.9.5 version (even though it says it is 4.9.4).
This is a complete nonsense. You can contact us by using our support form or by sending an email to cocktail@maintain.se. None of our customers has ever complained about Kagi service.
Actually, it is D-, but after reading the BBB report it is hard to tell from the report,
with 4 complaints in three years, what serious allegations you might be referring to.
Kagi does offer Paypal as an payment method which should add some confidence when using the service. A number of great software developers with high quality reviews here at Macupdate use Kagi service.
I like Cocktail very much. However I acquired it as part of a bundle and was a previous Onyx user/donater. For my uses I can't see any functional differences between the two. Now Onyx has a Lion version and I think I will try it again.
Wish there was a way to edit posts: Apparently there is a $4.95 upgrade for the Lion version. That seems reasonable and attractive to me as the Cocktail interface is a bit nicer indeed.
@Pepper131-If I understand your questions, just type "Onyx" into the MacUpdate search box and the MacUpdate Onyx page will appear with current versions/system requirements as of the date you search.
I am unable to use the new 5.0 version either manually of via scheduler. It always hangs and eventually I must force quit. As is, it is worthless to me.
I have written to the developer and expect a reply in a day or so.
I am a long-time Cocktail user and have loved having it; always giving it 5 stars. But this version, alas, warrants no stars.
I checked the box in the 'Login' tab so it would only show my administrator account at the Login screen. After I restarted my computer there were NO accounts at my login screen. The only option was "other..." which is useless. I have no way of loging into my computer because there are no accounts to login onto. Please help! I need this problem fixed ASAP!!!!
Cocktail opens up without any window and without saying what it's doing, but scanning my OSX.5.8 hard drives for endless 60 seconds, then opening an application list showing all my apps and asking: "Where is Cocktail?" Evil! Bad joke for 15$. Only good for trashing it instantly.
I just tried updating to version 4.6 on my Macbook running Snow Leopard 10.6.1 and it would not install no matter what I did. I even tried a clean install by uninstalling the previous version of Cocktail but that had no effect. Each time I had to force quit Cocktail after installing it into my applications folder and then trying to open it up for the first time. I have a 2 GHz Macbook with 4 GB DDR3 memory running Snow Leopard.
Disregard the above trouble as for some reason after I did a restart, it worked. Normally, I would expect a program to inform me that a restart was necessary---Apple's always does.
Is this new version of Cocktail for Snow Leopard only for 64-bit Mac's running 10.6?
I started up from 10.6 and when I tried to launch Cocktail 4.5 I was given an error saying "Cocktail cannot be launched from this Mac because it's not compatible" or something alone those lines.
This would be a shame if the developer is doing this intentionally.
My serial code for Cocktail, which worked since I acquired Cocktail in a MacUpdate bundle
some time ago is not accepted for this latest version.
Must owners of previous versions repurchase Cocktail to use the latest edition?
I have been using Cocktail each evening for a while now, running it in Pilot mode, and having Cocktail automatically shutdown when it has finished. Today, for no logical reason, it stopped automatically shutting down. I trashed its preferences, hoping that would cure it, but it did not. Does the developer have any advice for me here? I'm using the Tiger version, with Mac OS 10.4.11.
After using Cocktail (the appropriate version) on my G5 iMac running 10.4.11 and tweaking the network settings last night, I came in the AM after a cold boot to find myself unable to use ALL internet services. Safari gave me a helpful error, something along the lines of "POSIX error, no buffer available" or some-such.
Handily, apple/support/discussions had this nifty thread that explained how to fix it.

Also, it should be noted that if you purchase Cocktail, you will probably purchase it from "Kagi," the outfit Maintain uses to manage its purchases.
Kagi has a D+ rating from the BBB and serious fraud allegations against them.
The product may be good, but beware the hassles involved with maintenance and purchase issues.

When manually launched, it begins and runs for about a half second and then it abruptly quits.
I can but hope others are enjoying more success.

Delete the folder /Library/StartupItems/Cocktail.
The helpful discussion in discussion:

I suggest the programmer either fix or idiot proof this setting area, and anyone who doesn't know precisely what they are doing leave it alone.
