DiskMaker X

8.0.323 November 2018

Make a bootable OS X installer disk.

Overview

DiskMaker X (was Lion DiskMaker) helps you to build a bootable drive from the official OS X installer app (the one you download from the Mac App Store). It detects the OS X Install program with Spotlight then proposes to build a bootable install disk and make it look as nice as possible. It’s the easiest way to build an OS X Installer in a few clicks! Then you can use the Install drive to fully re-install the OS on a freshly formated drive, or install it on your many Macs without re-downloading the full installer.

Just made a fresh install of macOS Mojave on 2 Macs from USB disk created with DiskMaker X v8. Have used the app before multiple times and never had a problem. Thank you for a very handy tool!

The Developer's website offers version 8.0.3, but I found that its 8.0.3 download has both the same Creation and Modification times as does the version 8.0.2 available here at MacUpdate. Nevertheless, the size of those apps are different (by about 5K bytes): I found that v8.0.2's Finder Info Size is 4,925,291 bytes (5 MB on disk), and v8.0.3's Finder Info size is 4,930,149 bytes (5 MB on disk).

Hey all, I wanted to leave a note fro the Developer here, there seems to be an issue with 8.0.2, where even after a fresh download and install of the App still reports a new version, even with the posted version here being the latest. By the way I downloaded DiskMakerX directly from the developer's site and it still reports a new version, even with the latest download. there doesn't seem to be anything newer then what was released today.

I had an unusual issue when using DiskMakerX version 8 to create a Mojave install disk. While the process completed correctly, the issues came up after booting from the USB drive. Apparently as of 10.14.1, the wireless Mouse / Keyboard assistant pops up. I have the Magic Mouse 2, and Apple Aluminum USB keyboard with the hub. On the USB stick, the system was never able to link with the magic mouse, even though it was on, and pressing the button / holding the button didn't seem to work. The keyboard worked fine. Oddly enough the Restore partition on the hard drive brought up the same assistant, but was able to link with the mouse just fine. Also the restore partition seems to remember the setup, so I haven't been asked again if I have to use it again. I used a clean 8GB SanDisk USB stick, and a fresh download of the Mojave install app. I haven't tried making a disk from version 8.0.1. System is a late 2015 iMac 27" Did Apple Change the OS install? I've never been asked about keyboard / mouse prior to the 10.14.1 installer, nor has the USB installer ever had issues with the magic mouse.

This is such a convenient way of being able to install macOS on multiple machines. It allows me to do a fresh install of the OS and then restore Users and Applications from backups.

I think DiskMaker X v7 will do High Sierra. Check their webpage.

Here is a chart I have made to help me keep the versions straight. It can be confusing otherwise, as to what is compatible, what is required, what it can create. (sorry about formatting, i save it as text docs):
DiskMkr Reqs Builds installer for OS X version:
------- ------ --------------------------------------------
8.0 10.10+ 10.14, possibly can make earlier OSX as well
7.0.1 10.9+ 10.12-10.13
6.rc5 10.9+ 10.10-10.12
5.0.3 10.7+ 10.9-10.11
So, what this means is that, e.g., DiskMaker v7.0.1 requires at least OS X 10.9 to run the program, and is able to build a startup drive for installing 10.12-10.13 (only).

And what the program does is this: It will create a bootable USB Flash Drive that contains the OS X installer program. Useful when you wish to install OS X to a new or freshly re-formatted drive/computer.
As long as you have downloaded the Apple installer program for the OS X you intend to be installing. For example: "Install OS X El Capitan.app". or whichever version. That is required for you to do first.
