EvoCam

4.305 January 2015

Live streaming and security camera software.

Overview

EvoCam is here! Completely rearchitected, redesigned and reengineered from the ground up as a Cocoa application, EvoCam 4 will set the new standard for the ultimate webcam software.

EvoCam features industry-standard H.264 video and AAC audio streaming. With support for both RTSP over HTTP and HTTP Live Streaming using HTML5, EvoCam can be viewed using Safari on OS X, iPod Touch (3rd generation or later), iPhone (3GS or later) and iPad - without the need to install an app. Network configuration is simple too, with only one port to forward on your router.

EvoCam also features Actions, a powerful and flexible way to perform a variety of tasks when certain conditions occur. You can use Actions to create timelapse movies, record movies when motion or sound is detected, publish a webcam image on a web server via FTP, or integrate EvoCam with your security system or home automation software. A list of supported cameras is available.

What's new in EvoCam

Version 4.3:
  • Added ability to include link to stream in emails
  • Added ability to enable/disable/adjust sensors via AppleScript
  • Added ability to move timelapse archive images to the trash
  • Added support for RTSP with newer Foscam firmware
  • Fixed issue where documents from earlier versions may not open
  • Fixed issue where Automator workflows could receive wrong image

Requirements for EvoCam

  • Mac OS X 10.6.0 or later

I have been using EvoCam since 2008. I had downloaded many different trials before making my decision and EvoCam for the features and the money was my choice. I have not been disappointed. Set up was fairly intuitive. I struggled a bit, but I consider that normal for a new piece of software that has so many features. I did need to contact their support and got a nearly instant response. Amazing! I was using it with three cameras (two wireless network cameras and one usb) to keep an eye on my 86 year old father who was living with us. I set it up each camera to upload a picture to a web page every three minutes and then archive 50 or so to another page. I also have it set up (with the help of DynDns) to see live feeds. When Dad would fall, I could call a neighbor to pop in and help him up. (I am lucky to have such a nice neighbor.) It was great piece of mind. Then one day I go to the office and boot my computer and the sound is all the way up. I almost never have the sound turned on. So, I bring one of my cameras to work and set it up there to monitor my workstation. Turns out one of the tenants in an adjoining space was breaking into our office at night to watch porn on my computer. With the help of EvoCam and the police we caught him and had the incriminating photos to prove it. (Trust me, these were porn in their own right.) He went to jail! I went out for Lysol. Yuk! Now, two cameras monitor the dogs and the house on motion detection and one monitors my work station. I keep my EvoCam up to date and have had no issues. I have used it both on a PPC and an Intel Mac. EvoCam has worked flawlessly for me. I highly recommend it.

Looks like their website has disappeared completely. http://www.evological.com/evocam.html goes to a 404 page . Been going to 404 for a couple of days. My version 4.3 has been crashing with regularity, thought there might be an update. I used this app for years.

This used to work well - now not so much. Support requests aren't answered (even after over a month), and the software is beginning to be outdated. My particular problem was that it only supports "basic" (plain text) authentication, but my latest camera requires "digest" authentication. Too bad. I hope the developer (who used to be great) overcomes whatever he is struggling with, and I will gladly fix this review.

I used to be a fan. Now I think they have abandoned the software. I have been trying to get support via email for MONTHS now and nary a peep. It doesn't work. It has never worked 100%. Wish I could get my money back.

Good thing it's a free trial. Could not connect to my foscam camera.

IP Camera Viewer 2 has now problem connecting to it. I'm after time-lapse, which is why I was looking at EvoCam... All it gets is a "401: Unauthorized" for a while, and then quits (crashes). I quadruple-checked everything I could think of... the IP address (with and without :80), made sure the "requires username and password" was checked, and the correct values were entered.

Really gone down hill. I've owned this software for three major releases. With version 4 the product has little to no value. I've been running the same DLINK brand cameras for years, and had no problems getting videos to record everything going on. Now with version 4 (necessary with latest models), I get extremely segmented recordings that MISS all the movement. This is broad daylight as well as night videos. A car will suddenly appear, then disappear. Never who got out or in. Thinking it was my camera settings, I licensed uNetCams. uNetCams records EVERYTHING. I get second to second videos of all activity. As well, EvoCam 4.x crashes CONSTANTLY (10.10). It can't run more than 20 hours without crashing. Usually a lot less. So most the time I wake up and nothing has been recorded at night. That's when I need the software to work the most. I wanted to warn anyone looking for a solution. Perhaps it works better with other cameras, but I tried every setting, including reducing frame rate from 30 to 7, and nothing helped. I hope they fixed it, but for now it's a thieves wet dream.

I tried the free trial of version 4 and I liked the ease of setup and the interface. The interface is pure Mac and it's easy to figure out, and appears to have more than enough flexibility to meet my needs. After I purchased it, I was pleasantly suprised to learn that the same serial number would work with version 3 and the beta version 5. I'm using it with a Dahua 3 megapixel camera and the preset setting for the older Dahua camera. Works fine. Also discovered that some of the presets allow me to use the AirBeam iOs app on my old iOS device as a another ip Camera. Just put in your ip Address and use one of the Airlink presets. Sweet. Would recommend this software. Works very well, although version 4 had a bit of trouble on a very old Mac running Lion. Version 3 worked great on that old Mac. Changed Macs and version 4 and Version 5 beta works great without a hitch. The software developer is very responsive- offered to configure my Dahua camera as a preset.
