Textual

7.1.107 March 2019

Lightweight IRC client.

Overview

Textual is a popular OS X application for interacting with Internet Relay Chat (IRC) chatrooms.

What's new in Textual

Version 7.1.1:
Changes
  • The confirmation dialog for quitting Textual no longer appears unless you are connected to IRC.
  • Any file that is executable will now be treated as a script instead of files with specific extensions.
  • The NICKLEN configuration option of RPL_ISUPPORT is no longer enforced due to significant compatibility issues.
  • Styles bundled with Textual now declare the supported-color-schemes property to define the appearance of scrollbars on versions of macOS that support it.
Fixes
  • Trust dialog for invalid certificates not appearing when one is encountered.

Requirements for Textual

  • OS X 10.9.5 or later

The homepage for Textual fails to mention that it is based on Limechat, which is both outstanding and costs nothing. Limechat is also actively developed. Trying a demo of Textual, I couldn't see any must-have feature in it (that isn't already in Limechat). I also found some users in the Textual IRC room to be either sarcastic or indifferent to my question of what Textual has that Limechat doesn't. Which I thought they would be eager to answer, seeing as they are selling a product. So my first interaction with them was not impressive.

A well thought out IRC client, that has a simple intuitive interface. Well supported with quick response time for anyone with questions. Priced very well (with a suitable trial period) for anyone looking to explore one of the internet's classic protocols. Personally I found this client better suited to my needs than freeware Colloguy and I confidently purchased Textual on the first day of my trial.

IMHO the best IRC client on OS X. Good to see it's continually being updated while the other major IRC clients haven't been updated in over a year.

i disagree
The best would mean it has all its implementations perfectly working.
Unfortunately this is Not the case.
it may be good looking and appealing, but many of the features it offers are incomplete and buggy.
Then compares to Colloquy which may occasionally crash its true. BUT ItS FREE. it lacks the most important feature when using file transfers = Resume. and only for that is a total no-go for me.
Now listing all the comparisons would be very long and time wasting, especially when reading comments about the good shining looking of an app, maybe the best option for these kind of consumers would be a pinball or a xmas tree, you won't chat with it but i'm sure you'll be happy.

Best IRC Client I found. Better then Coloquy because more stable more descent design.
