Adze

1.4.12
12 December 2016

View and edit GPX files from your GPS device.

Overview

Adze gives you the tools to edit GPX documents like a pro: create, modify and delete tracks, plan routes, mark waypoints, and more.

Features
  • Dissect Recordings - Merge tracks that shouldn't have been split, or split tracks that should have. Delete undesired sections or extract detours as a separate track.
  • Plan Routes - If you're planning an expedition, Adze allows you to plan the route and mark waypoints, check distances and view the proposed route on multiple maps before exporting the GPX data to a device.
  • Tidy Documents - Optimise tracks to remove redundant data, change item names and colors, edit GPX document metadata and prepare your documents for sharing.
  • Edit Points - Add, move or remove points graphically with the Edit Point tool, or use the points list to manually edit values.
  • Identify Rest-stops - Adze can identify areas where you stopped for a rest, lunch, or an overnight stay and automatically split your tracks at those locations.
  • Update Metadata - Change item names or colors and give your GPX document a title, author or description.
  • Fix Timestamps - Offset timestamps by a fixed amount, overwrite them in bulk or remove them completely.
  • Collect Statistics - View statistics about duration, speed, elevation and gradient for entire documents or selected sections.
  • View Documents - View your documents on a road, topographic or satellite map directly within Adze or export to KML to view it in Google Earth.

What's new in Adze

Version 1.4.12:
  • Improved the way zoom works: when zooming in or out, Adze now centers the zoom on the point directly under the mouse cursor

Requirements for Adze

  • Mac OS X 10.6.0 or later

I purchased Adze in May 2017, and have found it quite useful for viewing & editing gpx files. However, since November, 2018, I can see my gpx track, but no background map - just a white background. I tried “street”, “satellite”, “hybrid”, and “terrain”. I’ve zoomed out and zoomed in, to no avail. My track could be in Maine or California or on the moon. I have emailed Kobot Software 2 times in November and once in December, but have received no response.

I use this app sparingly, but it has always come through for me when I need it. I have been archiving my GPS tracks for years, and the older Garmins would split a day's track into many different tracks, and name them all sorts of weird things. Adze allows me to sort this out, and create a single track which I can use to georeference my photos, display in Google Earth, bring into my iPhone, etc. Adze is also the easiest way to get rid of timestamps in your gpx files. See this post http://freegeographytools.com/2010/removin-time-data-out-of-a-gpx-or-kml-file-to-make-it-work-right-in-google-earth for a description of why gpx files are such a pain in the pattutie in Google Earth. "Export as kml" solves that problem by deleting the time stamps from a path.

Opening a 91kb day trip file with Adze requires 1.76GB (!) of RAM - wtf? How can Adze/Garmin justify such bloated RAM requirements - even if it uses Google Earth as base map? Lucky I have 8GB of RAM or I might not be able to use ADZE!!! Time to look for alternatives - less RAM hungry options!!

I just opened a 1.7 MB GPX file and Activity Monitor reports that Adze is using 93.5 MB (OS X 10.9.4).

If I launch Adze by itself without making it open any file, Activity Monitor says it's using 55.1 MB

crashes if i merge 2 tracks. i've extracted a part of a track and inverted. then i've load the original track and imported the extracted part of the original track. now when i merge the 2 tracks, the app freezes. maybe the problem is the gps-time. i will add the first part of the track to the end because my gps tracker stopped tracking. if i add the first part to the last tracked point, i'll get the complete track/route!

Looks like a nice utility, based on a few minutes of trying it out on a GPX track. Some of the UI isn't obvious and demands reading the built-in User Guide accessible from the menubar Help menu. It would be nice for us backward people to be able to choose miles and feet (for climb) rather than only have km and meters as the units of measurement.

If you have an active internet connection while running Adze, it uses Google Maps as the underlying map. You can switch among Street Map, Satellite, Hybrid and "Physical" (which Google calls "Terrain").
