Evernote

7.1121 June 2019

Create searchable notes and access them anywhere.

Overview

Evernote allows you to easily capture information in any environment using whatever device or platform you find most convenient, and makes this information accessible and searchable at anytime, from anywhere.

  • Create notes containing text and audio
  • Find printed and handwritten text within images
  • Clip application and web content directly into Evernote
  • Synchronize with the Evernote Service and access all notes, even ones taken using other clients

Note: while Evernote is listed as free, there are subscription pricing plans that can be viewed here.

What's new in Evernote

Version 7.11:
Fixed:
  • Migration error that some users encountered after upgrading to 7.10
  • Evernote helper displayed null as keyboard shortcut
  • Audio note recorded in Mac client and shared via email did not play in Mac Mail application
  • Spotlight indexing would periodically ask for a password

Requirements for Evernote

  • macOS 10.12.0 or later

I think Evernote is the most hyped and overrated app of current time. The interface does not help in decluttering your data or notes. The worst thing is, everything is 'online'. Whilst I have a local copy of my Evernote notebooks, the Evernote Safari plugin does not talk with the local copy but only with the online account. That way, the free 60 MB data allowance per month will be gone very fast. Also, the Safari plugin needs to be logged in like a website, so if you've deleted your history you have to log in again: this could be avoided by using the local copy. The good thing about Evernote: I like their logo, I like elephants!

@Scott-C-H That's interesting. Have you considered EagleFiler, then? It stores everything in regular Finder folders …

Yes, I have looked into EagleFiler in the past and granted, it is a more future-proof alternative to Evernote and all the other "Everything Bucket" style solutions. I still didn't see a compelling reason to use it instead of working directly with files and folders. Tagging might be one reason some users might opt to use EagleFiler, but I learned to use a file name as a way to include tags and keywords, and I find it more than sufficient in locating my information without third-party software.

Ultimately, I have moved toward utilizing a personal information management workflow that eliminates the "needs" to rely on third-party solutions altogether. I've been around long enough to know that all of these things will always come and go as tech evolves and the market climate changes. I like to keep things generic and portable as much as possible at this point.

Evernote 7.6 spotlight support is broken when updating to Mojave so it only gets 2 stars from me. If you are dependent on Evernote then you should stick to High Sierra for now.
