Stellarium

0.19.124 June 2019

Desktop planetarium of the live sky above you (beta).

Overview

Stellarium is an open source desktop planetarium. It renders the skies in realtime using OpenGL, which means the skies will look exactly like what you see with your eyes, binoculars, or a small telescope. Stellarium is very simple to use, which is one of its biggest advantages: it can easily be used by beginners.

Well, this is entirely misleading - "Canonical Ltd." is (according to Wikipedia) "a UK-based privately held computer software company founded and funded by South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth to market commercial support and related services for Ubuntu and related projects." They PROVIDE LINKS to Stellarium 0.16.1.2 on "launchpad.net", and it is identified everywhere in the program as "0.16.1" but confirmed as the 16.1.2 release via the Clang version in the About dialog. HOWEVER, the STELLARIUM.ORG website - to which this page SHOULD be directing people - has version 0.17.0 available as of 12/21/17 and provides downloads from its Github repository. My rating is for the Stellarium.org 0.17.0 version of the program.

I love that application, I don't have a telescope, and that software permitted me to see the stars, and recognize them, and their constellation, I use it since a long time ago on my iPad/Mac

This MacUpdate listing for Stellarium is grossly outdated. On this page it states version 0.15.0 as released on Nov 10, 2016, and on this page, notes version 0.15.0 is beta. In actuality, Version 0.15.0 was released July 31. 2016, and is the current (as of the date of this post) STABLE version.

There is a version 0.90.0 released Nov 4, 2016, but that is BETA for testing purposes only. Also, this MacUpdate page says Stellarium is compatible with 10.7; on the developer site the last several versions all say 10.8 or higher (full 64-bit required).

Your best bet is head to the source site https://launchpad.net/stellarium and download from there; frankly I would not trust what MacUpdate is serving up on this page.
