RSS Menu

2.7.1
29 July 2019

System-wide, menu-accessible RSS/Atom reader.

Overview

RSS Menu is a systemwide menu that allows you to read and organize your favourite RSS or Atom feeds.

The articles are automatically updated and you will get a notification when new articles are available or when some other event occurs. In addition to visual notification, you can also enable speech notification and choose one of the many built in voices.
It is also possible to integrate iTunes (for podcasts) and Safari (for RSS bookmarks) with RSS Menu.

Features:

  • background application (doesn't get in your way and is accessible from anywhere)
  • very fast parsing engine
  • importing and exporting of OPML files
  • Growl and speech notification
  • many options to customize the menu
  • support for grouping feeds in submenus and adding seperators
  • support for using RSS Menu as an external reader in Safari (or any other application)
  • support for integration with iTunes and Safari
  • support for favourite icons (aka page icons)

Note: Fixed a last minute bug that would generate a lot of CPU and memory. Please redownload RSS Menu, we apologize for the incovenience.

Excellent little app. I only use it for news feeds as it saves me the time of opening Safari only to find that there is nothing interesting to read most of the time.

Even I'm happy to see RSSMenu has new life, I must report two (minor) bugs: - one that I reported for version 2.5 and 2.6, and isn't solved for now: read and unread articles scattered in the menu (see my comment from 25/06); - second bug is that while I loaded again RSS feeds to RSS Menu 2.31 (exporting and importing them), every time I reboot my Mac, the new RSS Menu (>2.5), adds the feeds from RSS Menu 2.3, duplicating feeds more times.

Here I ship two screenshots, one with RSS Menu 2.6 and one with RSS Menu 2.3.1, both has previously been updated and put as read at same time.

<https://tinyurl.com/RSS-Menu-2-3-1>
As you can see, in RSS Menu 2.6 some "not updated" feeds are shown between the unread feeds.

I'm really happy to learn that RSS Menu is still developed and has an upgrade (2.5) I received through App Store... but I must notice that it won't import RSS feeds from previous version (2.3.1) and trying to import the feeds, brings RSS Menu preference window to freeze. I can even open another preference window from menu, but can't close frizzed one. This happens before I can select exported feeds file. All this on my MacPro mid 2010 with macOS 10.14.5.

Same problem here. I really love RSS Menu, using it daily since many years. Installing the new version deleted the .opml file from the older version and opened up empty. Luckily I had a backup. This new release should have been tested a bit more before sending it out.

I'm happy to upgrade my review after the last update (2.5.1), all problems seems to be resolved. Best RSS reader at all! Sorry I can't find how to modify rating... I guess a can add a new review when MacUpdate will notice the new version.

I'm really hopeful that RSS Menu will have a lightning future... but there's some work to do even on 2.5.1 version. So, first of all, it lacks text appearance customisation pane (in previous version I greyed read articles). Secondary, now I find unread articles scattered in the menu... I'm pretty sure that with version 2.3.1 they was on top, but can't verify because of the third behaviour, which is undoubtedly a bug, precisely RSS export does't work.

Solid, clean, effective. My wishlist: 1 - Automatic marking as read of overlapping links in different lists. 2 - Full sync between machines over iCloud.

I sent the Developer a message to the effect that I can not put any RSS in my folder provided by RSS Menu and I hope Jesus De Meyer responds. The Rss Menu as it now stands is useless. It could be the fault of the MAS store.
