Broken Alias CM

0.506 October 2004

Fixes broken aliases.

Overview

Please note that this plugin is no longer supported as Leopard does not support the API it uses anymore. The Finder in OS X has a bug. It cannot show where the original of an alias was, if it cannot find the original itself. Be it because you just copied everything to a different computer, or because you discovered this 7 year old alias that doesn't point to anywhere now.
Now this is extremely annoying, cause this information is very useful if you want to locate the missing original yourself.
Which is where Broken Alias CM comes into play. With it you can simply copy either the filename or the complete path of the former original to the clipboard.

Requirements for Broken Alias CM

  • Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later

If it can copy the complete path of the former original to the clipboard, then why can't it simply reveal/open the former path/folder directly? Please improve it; thanks! *****

Finally after so many years, sb made this Alias feature really useful! For example, when naming an alias completely different than the original file, fear no more not being able to track and reassign things if the link breaks: the CM will read-out the original file path stored in the alias file. OS9 users that hesitate to switch to OS-X fearing they won't be able to track originals of their alias files afterwards, may breath relieve: acc to the author, the CM will read-out broken links from OS9 aliasses just as well.

Very handy application, easy to operate once you understand that the file- or pathnames are copied to the clipboard. Documentation should have mentioned that.

Installed the plug-in in the Contextual Menu as described and restarted. Right-clicking on the example however does not produce the menu as shown, it has only one extra item "Copy Broken Alias". Am running OSX 10.2.8 on a dual-processor G4.
