PeerGuardian

1.7.028 July 2015

Security tool for P2P clients (Beta).

Overview

PeerGuardian is a privacy oriented firewall application. It blocks connections to and from hosts specified in huge blocklists (thousands or millions of IP ranges). Its origin seeds in targeting aggressive IPs while you use P2P.

PeerGuardian is an open project. Not only is its source code open for you to read, use, and modify - but the project is open for you to join and contribute in any form (code, documentation, bug reports, web and support).

What's new in PeerGuardian

This program does exactly what it purports to, and how. It rocks, I've never had problems with stability or anything else, but I've never delved into its depths. All that being said, it's ugly as sin. Really heinously, awfully ugly. I'm not a developer, so I don't know how hard it is to make an app with a UI (or at least a good menu-bar icon), but I hope that they release an update soon. Looks don't really matter that much to me, as long as it's functional, and this is entirely. If it gets a UI facelift, it'll get five stars from me.

If anyone is interested, 1.6b2 works fine for me on a Macbook Pro running Mavericks (10.9.5). I could not get any other version to work. It's available at sourceforge.net. You'll need to populate it with lists for it to work properly. I get mine from iblocklist.com. It's also useful to add lists from ipdeny.com for hostile nations. I'll let you deduce who you should add. (Hint: one in particular uploads a lot of bogus software to this site with fake reviews galore.)

Just FYI, I just realized country lists can also be found now on iblocklist.com. (They've added a tab in categories.) So it's now a one-stop shop. Easy peasy. Also, you can just cut-and-paste the lists into your peer guardian list manager after naming them. (No need to download any files directly. Peerguardian will do it for you from the http address you paste.)

This is very interesting. Is this truly being updated again or is this just a very dated package? Also any information on the supported OS versions for this release? The SF page itself is rather sparse it seems for this information.

Looking at the comments on SF I saw this:

bergstrand.org/brian/software/bin/PeerGuardian_180b2.zip p.s. If it still doesn't seem to work after this update, try "Quit Helpers", "Quit" and then relaunch. The kernel extension version should be 1.1.13: $ kextstat | grep xxx 233 0 0xffffff7f8292d000 0x5000 0x5000 xxx.qnation.PeerGuardian (1.1.13) <5 4 3 1> (…less)

So, I'm assuming this is not an update.

For those concerned, this version is dated April 15, 2013. There has not been an update for the Mac version because, as of at least 2015-03-31:

"Description
"Peerguardian OS X:
"Not developed anymore. We've lost contact with the OS X developer. New contributors are welcome!"

IOW: This is an old, outdated, no longer developed piece of ABANDONWARE. That could change, but for now, just ignore this application. Or so judge I.

There are constantly updated peer lists available to use for P2P apps such as Transmission. Occasionally, the URLs to these lists change. Therefore, I'm not going to publish a URL to the current list here. Sorry. Search around on the net to find the latest.

Nope! PeerGuardian_170b2 - Worked great up until I installed OS Update 10.8.3 this AM and on the reboot PG failed and anything I tried to do through the app's menus failed with various error messages. (new MB Pro, 2.6 GHz, 8 Mb) Too bad it didn't even get out of beta before it was toast! It was a great app; hope the developer can find an easy fix and get an update out.

Extremely useful piece of software that works on Mountain Lion. I wish there were more of this type of app to choose from, but at least, we have this one. And yes, it works as advertised, if you try and figure out how it works. Don't install, sit back and expect it to do the rest.

Since today Peer Guardian is blocking all connections and all programs. I just thought there is some trouble with my internet connection, but it works fine disabling all filters... What went wrong there?

Good program, but the Peer Guardian Launch agent/daemon prevents Apple Mail and Notices from connecting to the iCloud servers. That is, the PeerGuardian helper applications prevent Apple Mail from connecting to the iCloud IMAP and SMTP servers. Definitely a bug. How can I solve this?

go into list manager, make a new list, name it whatever you want, set the checkboxes to active and allow all ranges and use this url : http://list.iblocklist.com/?list=aphcqvpxuqgrkgufjruj&fileformat=p2p&archiveformat=gz that will unblock all apple ip ranges.
