8.123 June 2019

Browse privately using anonymous proxies and VPN servers.

Overview

NetShade is an anonymous proxy and VPN app+service for Mac. Unblock your Internet through NetShade's high-speed proxy and VPN servers spanning 17 countries.

  • NetShade masks your IP address as you browse the web, by routing you through a proxy server. Anonymous proxies are becoming more and more popular in this age of heightened security and privacy concerns, and NetShade provides an effective and straightforward interface to easily protect your privacy.
  • NetShade 8 is a complete rewrite of the app, which brings great new features:
  • SOCKS5 support
  • Kill switch
  • VPN scrambler
  • Hop client
  • Speed test
  • Ping test
  • Web access test
  • Custom proxy servers
  • Sync proxy settings with server
  • Touch bar support
  • Dark mode support
  • New servers

What's new in NetShade

Version 8.1:
  • Added a preference in Startup: "Restore previous connection settings at app launch"
  • Fixed a UI issue where the interface could say "Direct" when connected to a proxy

Requirements for NetShade

  • macOS 10.13.0 or later

Why the negative reviews? This is a great product. It works as advertised, and is updated regularly. Users seem to confuse the application's functions with those related to the "public" Internet. For example, do you really think a VPN is going to work flawlessly in China, if at all? If so, you may not be living in the real world ...

This page is giving release notes for Netshade 7 even though Netshade 8 is out. Netshade 8 is a newer GUI and now supports different connection modes (VPN, SOCKS, HTTP). includes a speed test, and Netshade 8 apparently also lays down the foundation for their new product, HOP, which lets you easily configure your own computer as a VPN server.

Been using Netshade since NS3. Never had ANY problem with it. Smooth, easy, and very reactive developer, even for local problems! Won't change before next century :p

Netshade is the only annually billed VPN/proxy that I've been willing to pay for. More reliable than the other paid or free ones I've tried. There are periods where there are issues, generally when there is an update. But developer is very quick to respond to inquiries, usually in a day or two.

Good bit of software, but goes through periods where no network traffic can make it through. When it works however, it is very reliable.

The app is buggy beyond a shadow of a doubt. The service is incredibly slow -- both the proxy and the VPN server.

I'm sorry to hear that. We try hard to squash bugs. This 7.0.3 release fixes a bug which showed up in Sierra. If you are still experiencing any bugginess, please let us know the specifics and we'll fix it.

Netshade has worked great for me over the years. The developer has proved very responsive when need be. I use it (primarily the VPN) on Mac and iOS versions, with the latest OS versions 12.x and 10.x respectively.

Cloak is a hundred times better than this. Much better integration in the OS, and for the rare problem, tech support usually responds within minutes.

For clarification: Today's MacUpdate promo is for 6 months of VPN + Proxy access, which would normally be $29.50. It works for new and existing customers.

This is the best product by far i bought it at version 5 and never looked back its awesome and very secure the they reply really fast with queries. i made a mistake of buy another company VPN offering a lifetime subscription as i was installing it on another mac in another country but it was not as good as this one so the saving did not really work out. buying another one of these while its on offer ;) version 7 is really cool they are on the ball with this product and i feel safe and secure using it.

Version 7 is fast, easy to use and seems far superior to me versus other paid for VPN/proxy software I've tried. I first used Netshade back in version 4. All the problems/concerns/issues and needed features of past versions appear to have been addressed in version 7. Many VPN services are now offering lifetime licenses for less than the Netshade annual fee but they just don't seem to me as professionally implemented. Netshade does not now offer lifetime licensing but do offer several license options and occasional discounts. They also have Keyshade for password security and Flight Kit which looks like it might be nice for private pilots but I am not a pilot so I can not offer any advice on that one.

Thank you for taking the time to write this review- I appreciate it. And thank you also for being a NetShade user since version 4- a lot has changed since then!

There are indeed many new VPN services offering "lifetime" subscriptions, but I think you're correct to question their legitimacy. VPN/proxy servers are expensive to operate because of their large bandwidth needs. In order to keep a VPN/proxy service running long-term (13 years in NetShade's case), it's necessary to charge a subscription. A VPN operator needs to be able to scale the server bandwidth capability to handle the number of users on the servers, and a one-time subscription fee doesn't allow for this. So I suspect these new "lifetime" VPNs will not be very long-lived (and that might be their plan.)
