TeXShop

4.2705 April 2019

TeX front-end.

Overview

TeXShop is a TeX previewer for OS X, written in Cocoa. Since PDF is a native file format on OS X, TeXShop uses "pdftex" and "pdflatex"; rather than "tex" and "latex" to typeset; these programs in the standard teTeX distribution of TeX produce PDF output instead of DVI output.

TeXShop uses TeX Live, a standard distribution of Tex programs maintained by the TeX Users Group (TUG) for Mac OS X, Windows, Linux, and various other Unix machines. The distribution includes tex, latex, dvips, tex fonts, cyrillic fonts, and virtually all other programs and supporting files commonly used in the TeX world. The most recent version of this distribution is maintained for the Mac by the MacTeX TeXnical Working Group of the TeX Users Group and available under the "Obtaining" tab.

The latest TeXShop release, version 3, requires System 10.7 (Lion). An earlier version of TeXShop, version 2, is also maintained and requires System 10.4 (Tiger), although System 10.5 (Leopard) is strongly recommended because it fixes several important bugs in Apple's PDFKit code, extensively used in TeXShop. Users with systems 10.2 or 10.3 should use TeXShop 1.43, and users with systems 10.0 and 10.1 should use TeXShop 1.19. Both of these versions are available on this site.

TeXShop is distributed under the GPL public license, and thus free.

What's new in TeXShop

Version 4.27:
Minor changes:
  • When using the Apple Find Bar, command-G now searches for the next item immediately; it isn't necessary to activate the edit portion of the window before using this shortcut.
  • Nicola Vitacolonna provided new LilyPond engines and documentation.
  • The documentation on the Sage engine has been improved.
  • Latexmk was updated from version 4.61 to version 4.63b.

Requirements for TeXShop

  • OS X 10.10.0 or later

Absolutely great job. From the viewpoint of a scientist, TeXShop has the perfect balance between features and ease of use. It works perfectly and is constantly improving. Wonderful job. Another excellent choice is TexMaker.

Simply great. We empower our Physics and Astronomy majors with it. Have used it for years as our introduction to LaTeX for our students. They are mostly Mac users, but even the non-Mac users readily embrace TeXShop. It is customizable, and versatile, and extraordinarily well maintained. Yes, I have tried others, but I keep coming back.

TexShop is the best Latex application ever! So, how come the files of the best Latex application ever still lack a nice (or even ugly) icon of their own?...

I wish Apple wold fix this problem. When you set an extension to be opened by a particular application the icon provided by that application should be used, period! But Apple doesn't do that so other applications can, seemingly randomly, interfere with the icon display.

I use this program for many years and really fond of it. Kudos the developers. In recent version I am having a funny behavior that when I reopen a source file that I already compiled (and it opens together with its pdf preview), the first pdf page is white. If there are more than one page I need to scroll to the next page (in the previewer) and scroll back up to see the first page. If there is only one page then sometimes if I scroll up and down the text appears, but sometimes I must re-compile the source to bring have the preview working. I hope this update will fix this behavior. Nonetheless, this is a $5\times\star$ piece of work.

What OS version are you using? Have you updated to more recent versions of TeXShop? Note: TeXShop 3.66 and later actually require OS X 10.9 or later.

Hey herbs2, thanks for your comment. The problem I mentioned above was fixed in one of versions released since version 3.62. I think they mentioned it in one of the bug fixes. Anyway, it works flawlessly now.

It does everything and it is solid. There is no need to search for an alternative if you just downloaded mactex. I like that it has built in support for mac os spell checker which is important for me.
