I tried The GIMP a few years ago and thought it was OK, but just OK, so when I saw a new Mac-native version I figured it was time to try it again. I was prepared for the first launch to be a little slow, but I was not prepared for the entire user interface to be so sluggish that it's essentially unusable, even on small photos. I downloaded the previous version which uses XQuartz and it's night and day faster (and actually at least as nice an interface). I still prefer Photoshop for image editing, but for a cheap/free solution I'd stick to the previous version until the GIMP team figures out the Mac native interface a little better.

I'd looked at Picasa on the PC quite some time ago and was disappointed there was no simple resize tool. I downloaded this recent Mac version wondering if they'd added it and was disappointed that it's still not there. The only way to resize appears to be the "Export" tool. Also, there doesn't appear to be any way to prevent Picasa from scanning your system for photos. There are only two options - scan the entire system, or just scan a few of the most common folders where pictures are generally found. I don't want it looking for my photos at all - I want to pick my photos when I want to edit them. Picasa is still just kind of so-so. Photoshop Express is *way* nicer, and even though it's not free I still think it's a better choice than Picasa.
