The software has been removed from active distribution by the author.

At first this seemed great, but I realized all it does is create the RAM disk. I could have done that myself with a few lines of code in a batch file — based on the description, and I realize this was implied but not stated, I thought it would have some option to actually divert the caches to the RAM disk rather than have me search all over the Internet to figure out how to do that. $10 seems like a lot for a program that adds a GUI to a few lines of code... a very nice GUI I admit.

Years and years and years of promises and it still doesn't work.

Fine software. My only real complaint is that you have to manually quite on upgrade, which requires clicking on the tiny little gear and entering a submenu.

I got this when it was just about the only game in town. Updates are very expensive and in my experience, very little changes from version to version. Bugs continue unabated and usability is never improved. If you are having problems and need a point update, e.g. 12.04 to 12.05, you have to call them up, deal with the usual nonsense, and beg, plead, and demand until they send you the release, which really should be going to all customers automatically.

Releases are expensive through the company but they constantly spam you with "great deals!" and "last chance!" (especially for their associated pen reader) -- a lot like owning Toast, in that regard. Seems the only time they realize you're a customer is when they want to sell something. The rest of the time it's hard to convince them.

Meanwhile ABBY does just about everything ReadIRIS does, only faster and more accurately. I own Prizmo but have not tried its OCR yet.

The program does have a lot of features and such so I have to give it to them, and it does work pretty well at character recognition.

I am trying to figure out why to buy or not buy this. The vendor's web site and description do not mention any specific advantages over the free software from Fujitsu. Help?

My bad. Yes, the Fujitsu software that runs on Mac supports a much more limited number of scanners.

Yes, I owe an apology to the developer. Five years, by the way, is not a bad run for a software company. Most scanner companies don't seem to support their own drivers that long. If I had one of these high-end machines, I'd certainly consider this software for it... but doesn't make sense for the few models that come with their own Mac software (which I don't think he supports anyway - why would he?). Obviously there's always a risk but from what I've seen, the risk is no higher when dealing with a large company (seen Qualcomm's latest Eudora update lately? Ever deal with SPSS or IBM?)

The program works at about the same speed as Acrobat but is far easier to use. I was hoping it would not affect the images within my scanned PDF files, but it appears to have degraded them more than Acrobat -- not a huge deal for some purposes, but it makes me wonder why I can't make a PDF file searchable without changing the images in it.

@ExactCode -- thanks. I look forward to seeing the update -- generally if I want a PDF to be searchable-ized, it's all images.

As others commented, the free version does little of use, but gives you an overview of what the full thing does. Most of what it does, I think you can do easier by yourself, without software. I am unimpressed by the constant nags to upgrade to the pro version, by the amount of time it takes to do simple things (versus, say, the long-dead VSE BeFound), and by the pricing. I know this is a field full of impossible boasts and high prices, but I'm still amazed at the poor SEO options for dealing with sites that have multiple pages and keywords.

This program appears to have been abandoned; the web site is empty.
