I tried this out in hopes of fnding a way to convert to editable text some printed documents. I have an iMac and OS10.9, and an Epson XP 800 all-in-one scanner. This app installed but gave an error message saying I was missing some files. it did scan a page of document. Then I could not discover how to convert this via OCR to any kind of text-editable file. It does create a pdf, but Apple Image Capture will do that. So it is of no use to me for my purpose.

Thanks for the encouraging advice below. I had entirely the wrong idea of how to get the extracted text, based on my experience with apps that convert pdf to various editable forms. With Vuescan, in the menu bar under Edit, is "Copy OCR text". This puts the text, unformatted, into the clipboard.

For my purposes it is more useful to obtain the text with some format, as is done by ABBYY Finereader, which will produce an almost exact copy, even with imbedded images, of the original document as rich text format, which then MS Word can work with. I just have to use the Apple Image Capture, part of OS 10.9, to scan even a multipage two-sided document with my Epson. Various commercial apps can then turn this into an editable pdf (i.e. formatted) or make a rich text document, as Finereader does, all of which better suit my purposes.

Using OS 10.8.4 on an iMac and a MacbookPro with Safari 6.0.5 I have repeatedly downloaded JabRef 2.9.2, and 2.9, from MacUpdate and from SourceForge, and always when I try to run it gives the message that it is damaged and must be trashed. I am sure that if I could run it I could give a good rating, but I cannot run it.

This is not software for a novice such as myself, no matter how many years they have used a Mac. There is a lot to it, and although the documentation has a great deal of information about every menu item, there is no tutorial or introductory explanation for a novice such as me.

For example, I started it up, using all the defaults, and tried to enter a Transaction. But I got an error "This account register is read-only. If you want to edit transactions in this register, please open the account options and turn off the placeholder checkbox." But I could not find any "account options" nor any "placeholder checkbox", so I was not able to use this software. Also its response seems rather slow on my iMac. But if you can figure out how to use it, and do not need any support, probably it will do all sorts of things for you.
