Major problems, such as outright crashes, failure to display "local view." "Old" search results, which display data about a star or planet etc., persist on display even after application is restarted, obscuring the star field. Zodiac signs creating same obstructive "haze."

I have communicated this to developers and was assured those problems would be resolved in November release. However, the newest (paid version) has exactly the same problems, and is more unstable. Too bad, this was a promising application from an Astronomy entertainment point of view.

This review holds for both the iPhone version of the application, as well as, the desktop / laptop variants.

Update to my (8.23.2011) evaluation, and a review of the latest SyncMate 3.6 - Expert Edition- (paid version).

In August of 2011, I evaluated this software (paid edition,) and gave it ½ star due to long standing, and glaring, problems with syncing iCal's repeating (chained) events.

In short, SyncMate duplicates, and/or fails to properly assign events to specific weekdays, for recurring events (e.g, every two weeks.)

Editing a single event (such as canceling it) in the chain of repeating events, is not synced to the phone; the event remains on the phone calendar. To make things worse, putting same event back in iCal (e.g., a single cancelled instance, of a repeating meeting, was reinstated for that weekday) causes duplicates in the phone calendar; two identical events (same calendar) are listed, running side by side, at same time.

It took time, and repeated effort, to elicit a response from the developer; the developer was apologetic and asked for more data (which I supplied.) I was assured that issue was forwarded to actual development team.

Seven months after submitting the bug report, inclusive of log files generated by the program, nothing was done to remedy the problem. No response to my latest e-mails asking for update.

Hence, ½ star for failure to address glaring, long standing issues through two version upgrades (3.5 and 3.6) and reprehensible, if apologetic, customer support.

I want to emphasize that the issues are unrelated to the iCloud or CalDav; the bugs were present before appearance of either change in iCal.

It is rare that I feel compelled to write about software, notably, when it involves a negative evaluation. However, SyncMate has reached the absolute bottom of "usefulness."

I have used SyncMate for at least 2 payable upgrades (Expert Edition), and each upgrade introduced a number of new issues, which made software progressively less usable, and now, downright destructive. I have been in touch, about previous issues, with Eltima, but with little progress, and responses were anemic at best.

Background:

MacBook Pro 5,2 8 GB RAM, Momentus XT HD

SyncMate 3.1.1662 (latest as of 8.21.11)
iCal, as per Lion install.

All deemed compatible by Eltima

Note: I am aware of CalDav format not allowing direct syncing *from* phone to iCAL, but reverse (from iCAL to phone) is supposed to be compatible.

Problems:
Syncing generates multiple duplicates of scheduled, repeat events.

An event that is supposed to recur every 2 weeks, at specific time, and extends past midnight of starting day, was scheduled by SyncMate as an *every* day event (on the phone calendar).

In addition, same event is duplicated within each day, so two concurrent events "run" at same time.
What's more, SyncMate inserted "invented" events 4 weeks into the *past* month's schedule despite, specifically, limiting sync to no more than "past 2 weeks" and "all events forward."

Fixes tried: erase all events on phone calendar, and re-sync in one
direction (computer to phone)=>
result: same problem
sync only forward events
result: same problem

Conclusion: SyncMate is unable to properly transfer data when an event is scheduled as a repeating event, at a frequency other then daily (Note: event runs past midnight of start day).

At this point SyncMate, a paid for software, is useless for its intended, and advertised purpose; hence 1/2 star.
I wonder if any actual testing was performed on systems deemed compatible by Eltima.
