I've not used Filemaker in several years, but when I last tried, it felt clunky and slow to me... and I didn't like it's modal views. By comparison, I have used Panorama from its beginnings as OverVUE. Even then, it was an incredible database; lightning fast (sorting 10,000 records in 2 secs!) and customizable with user-procedures and forms. Now as Pan 6, I am still enamored with its speed and data-handling prowess. It now sports an abundance of Wizards to automate the construction of a database, or import data from other files. However, as a Mac consultant, I cannot say it is for the feint of heart nor the typical casual user. You will need a bit of computer savvy to learn your way around Panorama. The basics are not that difficult, but I find the average user has very little database understanding - and for them, Pan may not be cookie cutter enough. This is where Filemaker may have a leg up on Panorama. My impression of FM is that may be a bit more ready out-of-the-box. But I've never liked being boxed in anyway. So, for the programmer or those who want to handle massive amounts of data with raw RAM speed, customize its output, and compose custom routines (including custom menus and the ability to limit user access by level), you just can't beat Panorama.
